When Ellie MacAllister flees Toronto following the sudden and mysterious death of her husband, she returns to her childhood refuge in Nova Scotia expecting to find a little peace. But she is unprepared for what awaits her. Memories of places she never knew. Whispers from those long dead. Or is she just going crazy? Two hundred years earlier, Susannah Fraser and her new husband immigrate to New Scotland, where she must come to terms with the reality that all is not what it seems in this strange new land. Discover a haunted landscape, an eternal tree. Imagine a magic that could take us to the wisdom of those who lived before us, so that we may hear the voices of our ancestors. So that, we may hear what the world around us is trying to say. If only we would listen...
Brimming with mythology and history, love and intrigue, Ainslie Stewart's The Entangling will keep the reader listening long into the night for songs in the wind, while contemplating the magic of the hidden world around us.
I loved this book- wished it was longer by far. Had a chance to meet the author and get my book signed at Chapters Mic Mac Mall on Saturday. This was a total impulse purchase and I look forward to reading more of her work!!
Anslie Stewart is a wonderful writer. Once I began this book I could not put it down and was sorry when the story ended. Reading this book was the perfect ending for my visit to Nova Scotia.
I read the book "The Entangling" (started yesterday, finished today). I can't believe that it was published in 2011 and I had not heard of it!! Absolutely LOVED the story! It's a keeper and one that I will read again.
Loved the strong female characters. It is steeped in the history of Nova Scotia, I couldn't wait to see how it eneded but hated for it to end. Please write another beauty like this one. I must get it signed some day, it is now making the rounds with my family.
The struggles a person travels through to live with betrayal, grief, regrets, guilt, fear and finally the realization there is hope and forgiveness is clearly evident in the authors' writing. A page turner despite the two different time frames each character lives in. Her writing carries you along each wave of emotion as they occur for each woman. The setting is typical Nova Scotia in description of place and weather. Different from one moment to the next, just as each emotion is while struggling to get through each moment until you are able to see your way through.
Interesting work combining present day & historical. Definitely a Celtic mythological feel with both the connections to nature & psychic although refers to deportation of Acadians in Grand Pre Nova Scotia. I preferred the historic characters for their strength & being less self-centred than their modern counterparts. Also confess to trying to pin down the location as it's nearby. Could have used some more obsessive compulsive editing as the typos were annoying.
Clever transitioning between the present and the past kept me engaged all the way through the book -- so much so that I didn't see the twist at the end coming! Well researched, beautifully written, highly recommend.
