Having a lucky day is a long way from having a lucky life. We sometimes feel others are lucky in their career, family, and life in general. What if luck was nothing more than achieving the goals we set out to accomplish? In his book “Luck by Design: Certain Success in an Uncertain World”, author Richard E. Goldman lays out a plan in designing ones luck. There are no quick ways or crazy rituals that will make a person lucky all the time. Although, if one lays out a plan of action and follows through, they will find luck can have a pattern, or design in life. It is the quality of this design that determines how much “luck” we will see throughout our lives.

Without a doubt, being at the right place, at the right time will enhance ones chances of advancing in their career. Nonetheless, we have to find that right place and put ourselves there at the right time. Through having confidence in our abilities and talents, others will realize our best qualities and open doors for us. These open doors are sometimes called “lucky” opportunities. Why? If one focuses on building self-confidence and works on obtaining skills toward gaining new opportunities, when that opportunity comes it is not “luck”, the opportunity came into fruition from our planned growth.

The statement “You’re not immortal. You don’t have all the time in the world.” brings us to the reality that our time is limited (92.) Only by making a solid plan and designing how we want our lives to turn out will we realize the quality of our time. Does our time mean working all week? Will we get a chance to build relationships with family and friends? These questions are important in managing our time and building that design to make us “lucky.” Nonetheless, those that have the time to spend on leisure activities are not “lucky”, other opportunities and events in their life led to their leisure time.

With our time limited on this world, we want to make sure to maximize our time. We can only maximize our time by watching our physical and mental health. After all, if we make a grand plan and spend our efforts on achieving our goal, we want to reap the benefits. There is nothing worst than spending most of your life designing and working toward a series of goals that will give you comfort in life, then have a health condition that takes it all way. Some would say this is extremely “unlucky”, but is it. Most of us know what is healthy and what is not. Therefore, why are so many of us making the wrong choices concerning our health? If we want to become “lucky” in life, then we need to start adding our health into the design for our lives.

One of the most important aspects of gaining luck by design is managing our self before helping others (120.) Through learning and self-actualization, we will find a better series of lucky patterns. These aspects of self-management have to come before we manage others. We have to focus on designing a plan that will provide our life with abundant riches. After we have achieved these riches and have a solid footing for ourselves, we can start helping others design their luck.

Many books relay concepts on how to live a more prosperous life. Goldman accurately puts in plain words how the “lucky” are those that write a good plan and execute on that plan. We cannot simply sit around, dream of “I wish” scenarios, and expect to live a fulfilled life. The actions we take and the results from those actions make us lucky, not the reverse.
