I enjoyed the writing, but I felt like the story needed a prequel. In the end, there were not even enough flashback scenes or back story to fully answer all of my questions.
Nicholas Sheridan, the Viscount of Roxton: I did not like his character, nor did I fully understand his motivation. He was a bastard who sustained himself on short-lived pleasures. He obviously felt something for Abigail when he courted her, but I did not understand why he simply gave up and chose to steal her uncle's mistress when he was denied her hand in marriage. I did not understand why he never spoke to Abigail about it, nor did I understand his motivation to live exactly as his "father" wanted him to, even marrying a woman he did not care for. He was certainly not doing it out of familial love as he and his "father" obviously had continued animosity.
Miss Abigail Laytham: I liked her spunk. She had experienced more tragedy and heartbreak in 21 years than she should. Her father died. Her mother was ill, so her uncle took her in. Her aunt never liked her, and then her uncle killed himself. To top that off, her Suitor abandoned her and the huge Scandal caused the rest of society to do so as well. Then, she was likely to be married to a man over 60 years old. In spite of all that, she was the one trying to cheer up her brother and her cousin. However, despite experiencing this much of life, she definitely did not think things through. She was naive, immature, and foolish in many of her actions.
4.5/5. This book is a first for me by this author, but I look forward to reading the rest of the series and her other books. Ms Boyce is a skilful writer. Her prose is lovely, her characters vivid and fleshed out. This book is about misguided vengeful actions of first the hero, then the heroine, following the abrupt end of their courtship two years earlier. The redemption of the hero, Nicholas, was believable and he came across as truly honourable and a man changed by his past actions.
The heroine, Abigail, lost the book half a star, as her impetuous behaviour and hardline attitude in the first half of the book made her less than appealing. However, she too redeemed herself as she slowly realised her folly and that just maybe, her hatred of Nicholas was mis-directed.
Had he ever been the true enemy? Or just the easiest place to spend her pain? Perhaps, in the end, her true enemy had been her anger. It had blinded her to anyone else’s pain but her own.
She had painted Nicholas with a callous brush, only to realize her own misery had distorted the canvas.
The plot of the masquerade and not recognising familiar people because they're wearing a half-mask usually is a pet peeve of mine, but the author got away with it, because the heroine's Mother did point out the absurdity of such, forcing Abigail to confront the potential truth that perhaps she did not recognise Nicholas, because she simply did not want to see the truth. “It really isn’t difficult to tell who is who, dear, if you look close enough. Most people just don’t. It’s more fun to turn a blind eye and get lost in the mystery and the masks. But one cannot truly disguise who they are simply by covering a portion of their face. It doesn’t cover their eyes, or their mouths, the sound of their voice, their mannerisms. There are so many more things that make up a person.”
This book was a pleasure to read and free from Amazon. A heady introduction to a new author and I'll be heading back to Amazon to buy her other books.
There were no gray areas with her. There never would be. It was either black or white. Night or day. But he lived in a world of dawn and dusk and he could not reconcile himself to spending the rest of his life with someone who could not see or experience the colors and shadows. (About the woman he is forced to court instead of Abigail.)
Recklessly stubborn, blindly obstinate, foolish, and just too stupid to live ... that describes the heroine of this book. The hero is no saint, but he's at least more realistic. I will say that the editing is clean. Not recommended.
The plot had just about every trope, an old OM wanting to marry the young virgin h, she's tstl with no brain and worse, no empathy for others at all. She 'plots' the H's downfall, reeling from one chaotic action to the next. Her poor family being continually humiliated by her. I kept looking for the romance - silly me, none to see here.
This was such a good book the MC's came off as cruel or childish at first glance but as the story progressed and more of their history is reveled they grow as complex people controlled by societies constrictions
I loved it! I honestly don’t know how she does it. She has a way with words that not only moves you but captivates you in a way that the world around disappears and you become fully emerged into the world of the story. It kept me reading until I finished it all in one sitting because I was so drawn into it that I couldn’t put it down. Books like this tend to be rare gems and should be treasured. I am proud to not only have been granted the pleasure of reading this amazing piece of work, but I am even more proud to call her a friend. I honestly can’t wait to purchase the rest of the series and see what the other characters get up to.
Yet again, a story stemming from people not communicating, holding grudges, and caving to family expectations and misplaced sense of honor. Frustrating main characters, grotesque villains, and an anticlimactic ending. But hey, there weren't typos jumping out on every other page so it's got something to recommend it.
Where do I start with this review? This book made me fall in love. Following the journey of the characters and seeing that all so thin line between Love and Hate. I was captivated from beginning to end...plus that sneaky little spoiler chapter at the end for book two. Time well spent, I don't regret a thing.
This plot makes no sense, the characters are unpleasant, the dialogue is bland, and the relationship is shallow. Skip this one. It’s just...gross.
“Heroine” Abigail’s uncle tells her suitor Nicholas he can’t marry her because he is too scandalous. Instead of approaching Abigail herself or trying to earn her guardian’s approval through his good behavior, Nicholas decides to pursue the uncle’s mistress so that the man knows what it’s like to lose something. Look, I understand that sometimes you have to manufacture conflict in a romance novel, but this is a reach! The revenge is bizarre, sordid, and reinforces the fact that neither man sees Abigail (or women in general) as people.
The love triangle ends in scandal and tragedy, but of course the only consequences Nicholas faces are internal. He has retained his reputation, friends, wealth, and power. He talks a lot about how guilty he feels, and how he wants to redeem himself, even if he must suffer greatly in doing so. What is this dark fate he insists he deserves? A marriage to a proper woman his father chose. That’s his version of martyrdom! He even admits he’s going to spend most nights at the club with his friends to avoid her. So he’s facing down a tragic future of eating dinner with his friends every night.
Meanwhile, the scandal left Abigail’s family in dire straits- emotionally, socially, and financially. She’s facing down a tragic future married to an old man to save her family from poverty, while her relatives remain friendless and crippled by grief.
So I understand why Abigail wants revenge against Nicholas. But the way she went about it made me cringe with secondhand embarrassment. She was describing her plan to trick him into admitting publicly that the scandal was his fault (as if anyone would care!) and making snide remarks to make him uncomfortable at a party. She behaved like a 14 year old girl. This is supposed to be an enemies-to-lovers story, but their sparring was boring and, frankly, pathetic.
And the journey to romance is unconvincing. Neither of the leads have personality, except in regards to this Drama. So Abigail is feisty, and Nicholas is...hot? I still can’t understand what they see in one another. I don’t even buy their lust. And there is no fun or sweetness or tenderness or charm in their reconciliation (if you can call it that, since we only got vague allusions to their past romance).
A small but annoying detail: as part of Nicholas’s Redemption tour, he offers to throw money at two different women in order to protect Abigail’s reputation. Why couldn’t he throw that money at her or someone in her family,’since they were the ones about to be robbed of their home and the clothes off their backs? Fix a card game so you lose! Become an anonymous benefactor! If he wanted to help her, he could’ve found better use for that money. He spends so much of the book talking about how sorry he is without doing anything to help this family in any tangible way. And Abigail spends so much of the book talking about how he’s her enemy only to change her mind because...she wants to sleep with him? That’s how it came off to me! What a mess of a story.
I thought this book was OK, but not outstanding. I liked how the main characters both matured, but I could tell what was going to happen with the secondary unlikable characters.
Abigail and Nicholas are second-chance romance, star-crossed lovers with a healthy dollop of miscommunication thrown in. They were once courting and both thought they would eventually marry. However mixed messages result in the courtship ending with both parties believing the other wanted the break up.
Abigail is tainted by scandal after her uncle commits suicide following a break up with his mistress. She believes Nicholas is largely responsible because he took up with her uncle's mistress, causing his tragic breakdown. The reader knows that the incentive for this act was only in retaliation for the uncle denying Nicholas' suit.
The plot is well drawn, with multiple characters involved and pressure on the main characters coming from all sides. The pacing was good. I was getting anxious that even though I could see a ray of hope for a HEA, I wasn't sure how it could possibly work out.
Abigail absolutely hates Nicolas. Not just because he had courted her and then ghosted her. That had been bad enough. He was at the heart of an event that caused a scandal that ruined her entire family. Now it's up to her to save her family by sacrificing herself on the altar of marriage. It's all his fault.
Nicholas knows its his fault and is now trying to do better. He needs to do better, to be better. He can't afford to let the feelings he had for Abigail interfere in his plans. He has to prove himself better.
When they find themselves together again, they realize those old feelings are still alive and well. Can they find a way to be together or will their circumstances pull them apart?
An enjoyable book with an amusing premise, and a cast of charming characters.
I felt Abigail was a bit grating for a lead, only in her stubbornness which led to stupidity a lot of times. It came off as really over the top, and made me want to throttle her.
The pacing was a bit off to me, some parts lagged, some parts too quick to glean the information presented from easily. This book also ended really abruptly, and I felt dissatisfied with the hasty conclusion and not a proper tying of loose ends.
The overall story was entertaining, and the sex scenes were lovely. I’m much more interested in the second book following this book’s supporting characters, Spencer and Caelie.
Opal a mistress to Uncle Henry was an instrument to his demise. He loved his mistress but she was putting demands for more money which he didn't have. He had also turnrd down the marriage proposal from Nicholas to Abigale. Which was part of his demise. Will nichalos have to marry where no feelings no love will Abigale have to marry a mean old man 3 times her age.
An Invitation to Scandal (The Sins and Scandals Series Book 1)
The love story of Nicolas and Abigail. Abigail blame Nicolas for her uncle death and she want him to acknowledge the blame. Nicolas has courted scandals and now he want to change his way by marrying an up tight lady. Abigail is going to marry a man old enough to be her grandfather to save her family. Can they marry people they do not love?
I spent this extremely cold day under the covers, in my nice warm fleecy loungewear (P.J.s) reading this beautifully written historical romance cover to cover. An Invitation to Scandal by Kelly Boyce is the first book in her Sins and Scandals series and was the perfect book to read on a bone-chilling cold day. The author had me crying, hating, and smiling throughout the book warming me up from the inside with the emotional rollercoaster she had me on. I am looking forward to reading book 2.
Abigail Laytham's life has been ruined by Nicholas, and when an invitation to a scandalous party comes her way by mistake, she's eager to confront him there. Naturally, nothing goes according to plan. As their mutual attraction grows, both Abigail and Nicholas must avoid horrid marriages to other people before they can find a way to make their own relationship work. A fun tale with a spunky heroine.
This first offering of the series was free on Amazon when I acquired it and it's the kind of freebie I love. so often authors will give you a piece of a story that ends on a cliffhanger to try and hook you in. not with Mrs. Boyce. Here she gives us a wonderful full colored romance that examples her writing chops and is well worth the read.
The whole book would have been over in 10 pages if the main characters would have just talked to each other,''hey, did you want to break up or was it your uncle'' ''yes, i did''- end story ''no, it was him''- get married and the end.

I recommend this book to romantics everywhere. An enjoyable story with its misconceptions and twist and turns regarding two people caught , one in guilt the other in hate. As the story progresses the truth wins out. Love conquers in the end. Enjoy!
First time reading this author. I enjoyed her style of writing. The characters were all enjoyable and personable. You wanted to protect some and shake others.
Enjoyed this book. Author was skilled in creating characters that I cared about. While the book had a lot of stock characteristics of a classic historical romance, if you like that genre isn't that what you are looking for?
I've read some less than stellar books the last few weeks as I plow through the TBR on my tablet. Thankfully, I read this one and it has saved me from mediocre writing and really bad (really, really bad) editing.
I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.
A ton-romance, but with such a strongwilled and reckless heroine that it pretty much breaks the genre. Sorry, but British 19th century women of society were not like that and did not fetch up being ostracised by society.
I enjoyed this story because I love the way they were supposed to act in the Regency time. I had a lady thinking she should marry my husband but as a young sailor he took me instead. We had 57 years of marriage. It was a good story
Maybe I became jaded when it comes to romance novels, but this one left me very much disappointed. It had all the elements of a decent romance, but, for whatever reason, it felt stilled and borderline boring.
I loved everything about this book...this entire series really, right down to the perfectly described setting and well-rounded characters. This author really knows how to pull you in and keep you there. 5 magnificent stars from me.
