If you're looking for an official guide to Dutch culture, this is not it. If you're looking for one man's completely subjective and utterly biased impression of Dutch culture, this is for you.
Greg Shapiro is a loud American, trying to fit into a tiny Dutch country. He came originally to work for a few months at a comedy theater, but he met a Dutch woman and never managed to get back. Dutch people like to tease him for his loud voice, his awkward Dutch and his Americanness. Greg has learned to beat them to the punch: he makes fun of his own country first. Then he makes fun of theirs.
I like it. I would place a 3,5 rating if possible. A nice work that tells it how it is (for the time period and location). Wishing for the days of politics and interaction before the looming beast of Covid. But has a serious side too about the pitfalls of these far right anti-immigration policies and propaganda.
Do not read before going to The Netherlands, or it might make you question your decision. It is better to read it afterwards, then you enjoy it the most. It is a book written by a comedian, so do not take it serious! It is like an stand up act about the Dutch.
