El vampiro milénial es guapo, tímido, tiene problemas con las chicas y siempre está deprimido. Por otro lado, a los strigoi, en The Strain, se les cae el pene, el pelo y siempre están defecando, incluso mientras beben la sangre de sus víctimas. Ya extrañaba al viejo ghoul atemorizante y desagradable, la verdad. Otra cosa que hace de esta trilogía una rareza en la era del post-horror es que todo está estupendamente explicado. Es decir, no hay lugar para la pretensión disfrazada de licencia poética. Fiel a la fórmula del best-seller (el género más complejo, según mi apreciación), sus personajes jamás actúan por causas sacadas de la manga de sus autores.
Una de las cosas más difíciles de conseguir en la literatura post-apocalíptica es narrar de manera eficaz la caída de una civilización decadente. Hogan y del Toro logran esto de manera más que satisfactoria.
A diferencia del apocalipsis zombi, la dictadura de El Maestro no pretende exterminar a la raza humana sino establecer granjas donde criarla, como ganado —sólo que en lugar de extraerle leche, le extraerá sangre—, lo cual considero una afortunada manera de subvertir una vieja convención del género. Otra cosa que me gustó mucho de esta saga fue el recurso del libro dentro del libro, muy propio de la literatura de horror, como el Necronomicón, de Lovecraft; el Libro Verde, de Machen, y El Rey Amarillo, de Chambers. En este caso se trata del Occido Lumen, una especie de biblia negra que llena los espacios vacíos dejados por los textos de las religiones abrahámicas.

Wer mal eine andere Art von Vampir Geschichte lesen möchte, ist mit dieser Trilogie gut bedient. Tolle Charaktere, spannende und unheimliche Unterhaltung... Ich fand es top!

Dug the story but after 2.5 books I'd had enough. Still finished it, just to see what happened (and I love the tv show). Character development was poor and I don't understand why everyone reverently referred to the villain as 'the Master' - and how they intuitively referred to the villain as 'it' instead of more normally human 'him' or 'her'.
Also the ridiculous similes got old pretty fast. I still can't get over comparing the earth in a vampire's coffin to cake mix (WTF). And I still want to know what the hell is a 'reverse orgasm.' I'm very much sold on avoiding Hogan's books moving forward (especially since he refused to admit whether he or Del Toro came up with the cake mix simile).

Loved the first one, which unfortunately ends in a way that requires sequels! Second one nowhere near as good. Third one, I'd give one-star to. The conclusion is illogical and seems to negate everything that came before.

Breathtaking from its beginning! A terrific vampire tale, where men give their best and their worse to strive and, perhaps, survive. The end is simply like a full packed action movie, where you can actually see the fight. Very good indeed!

Guillermo del Toro a Chuck Hogan: „Zhoubný kmen, Strhujúca upírska trilógia i The Strain“
Prvá časť trojdielneho vedecko-fantastického románu s prímesou kvalitného hororu The Strain vyšla v roku 2009 najprv v americkom vydavateľstve William Morrow, neskôr v slovenskom vydavateľstve Ikar a o necelý rok aj v českom nakladateľstve Beta – Pavel Dobrovský. Paradoxom i naďalej ostáva správa, že táto populárna knižná dystopická upírska trilógia od Guillerma del Tora a Chucka Hogana prežíva menší televízny „boom“ pomaly dva roky od premiéry prvej série, a to aj napriek tomu, že o pôvodný scenár od Guillerma del Tora nikto neprejavil záujem. Námet musel najprv uzrieť svetlo sveta v knižnej podobe, aby oslovil väčšie televízne spoločnosti, ktoré v tejto chvíli strašia majiteľov televíznych prijímačov vírusom prinášajúcim záhubu ľudstva v oveľa väčšom rozmere, na aký sme pri podobných projektoch jednoducho navyknutí.
The Strain, alebo ak chcete Zhoubný kmen, tvoria tri objemné knižné zväzky – Nákaza / Žihadlá, Pád / Nákaza a Noc až navěky / Večná noc –, ktoré sa v roku 2011 dočkali aj komiksovej podoby. Na úctyhodných 24 komiksových zošitoch pracovali nonstop takmer 5 rokov scenárista David Laphman (Stray Bullets, Deadpool, Spider-Man, Wolverine, atď.) a ilustrátor Mike Huddleston. Komiksy, podobne ako televízny seriál, sa stali obľúbenou „ilustrovanou“ atrakciou a od vydania prvého čísla ich sprevádzala príjemne pozitívna kritika. Vo svete trblietavých upírov, upírov zvodcov či jednoducho priveľmi presladených upírov, ktorí na nás číhajú snáď na každom kroku, je práve The Strain vítanou zmenou. Táto zmena síce nie je bezchybná, ale pokojne obstojí aj pri takej konkurencii, akou je Dracula od Brama Stokera či The Vampyre v podaní Johna Polidoriho.
Obálky pôsobia fádne, príbeh sa rozbieha pomaly, na mágiu ako takú môžeme úplne zabudnúť, a podobne tak sa budeme musieť zmieriť s tým, že hlavní hrdinovia neoplývajú žiadnou nadpozemskou silou, sú smrteľní, sem-tam neohrabaní a majú z pekla šťastie. Toto všetko dokopy vytvára taký ten známy tuctový obrazec tuctovej knihy s tuctovým námetom i tuctovým spracovaním. Guillermo del Toro je však megaloman. Televízny, seriálový i knižný. Nič nenecháva na náhodu, všetko má premyslené, a čo je najdôležitejšie, aj z ošúchanej témy dokáže vyťažiť maximum. Zatiaľ čo väčšina fantastických románov baví čitateľov svojou naivitou, rozprávkovou drsnosťou alebo okázalou mystickosťou, upírska trilógia týchto dvoch pánov šokuje.
Prvý diel sa začína úplne obyčajne. Na NY letisku pristane lietadlo. Piloti, a ani posádka, nereagujú na výzvy dispečingu. Násilné vniknutie do útrob veľkého stroja odhalí niekoľko znepokojivých zistení a celý strašidelný prípad preberá do rúk doktor Ephram Goodweather. A ako to už býva zvykom, od tohto momentu sa začnú po celom svete diať čudné veci, ktoré vás prostredníctvom spomienok starého profesora Setrakiana zavedú nielen do exotických kútov sveta, ale aj k záhadám, ktoré sa ľudstvo snažilo rozlúštiť od dôb svojho počiatku.
Guillermo del Toro a Chuck Hogan si pre nás pripravili cestu v čase. Podávať k nej budú hravú zmes starého folklóru, novodobých koncentračných táborov a zmeneného potravinového reťazca, v ktorom už dávno nedominujú ľudia. V príjemne filozofickom rozjímaní sa dotknú biblického zrodenia sveta. Na pretras si vezmú aj médiá, hystériu spôsobenú skreslenými informáciami i boj o moc. Nebudú sa báť zájsť až za hranice desivých vízií a uvrhnúť ľudstvo do nového temného veku, ktorý sa začal tzv. Nocou nula. Načierať budú aj do nestálych vôd okultných vied, rôznych alchymistických záhad, jemného ezoterického klišé, a to s taktnosťou, ladnosťou a predovšetkým prepracovanosťou, pretože výstavba tohto unikátneho diela podlieha rôznym žánrovým variáciám i presahom. Pri nesprávnom dávkovaní by nebola atraktívna. Obsahovala by veľa zle spracovaných informácií a čitateľa by zbytočne miatla. Správny pomer prináša úspech a predovšetkým lákavú kvalitu. A tá pritiahne nejedného náročného čitateľa.
Príbeh sám o sebe nie je zložitý. Je pomerne jednoducho nalinkovaný. Každá postava, dôležitá pre jeho napredovanie, má v ňom svoje miesto a aj priestor na to, aby sa vyvíjala. Bohaté literárne zdroje, ktorými je predovšetkým rozprávanie starého profesora Setrakiana popretkávané, vnáša do dejovej linky príjemné osvieženie. Odhaľuje vám fakty, o ktoré by ste zrejme nikdy nezakopli, a zároveň vás pomocou fiktívneho zážitku vzdeláva.
Vy viac-menej spolu s profesorom zastávate akúsi úlohuučenca – antikvára a túto novú rolu si užívate plnými dúškami, pretože profesor, podobne ako zvyšné postavy, nie je jednotvárny. Je plastický a poddajný. Prirodzene reaguje na rôzne vyhrotené situácie a snaží sa riešiť vzniknuté problémy s chladnou hlavou, občasným zatajovaním nejakej dôležitej informácie alebo priamou manipuláciou. Napriek tomu, že je kladným hrdinom, je predsa len človekom. Má svoje zlé a aj svoje dobré dni. Nie je neomylný a aj keď sa mu ťažšie vlastné chyby priznávajú, snaží sa ich neopakovať a zmieriť sa s nimi.
Podobne zaujímavou postavou je aj doktor Ephram Goodweather. V jeho prípade by ste automaticky očakávali mnoho kladných vlastností, ktoré sú pre postavy vedcov typické. I v tomto prípade si dali autori záležať na tom, aby vám odhalili širokú paletu pestrých charakterov, ktoré majú v prvom rade pôsobiť autenticky. Doktor je síce smoliar, hlavne v medziľudských vzťahoch, má za sebou aj nepríjemnú minulosť, no narozdiel od klasických hrdinov v post-apokalyptických príbehoch on svoj boj s vlastnými démonmi prehráva.
Od prvého až po posledný diel prechádza Ephram Goodweather niekoľkými premenami. Všetky sú úzko prepojené s udalosťami, ktoré so sebou prináša neznámy vírus meniaci ľudí na strigoi. Raz je hore, raz dole, nad vodou sa snaží držať svojsky – nadmernou spotrebou liekov a alkoholom. Prichádza o všetko, a aj napriek tomu dokáže pozbierať sily na to, aby niečo pre náš svet urobil. Neurobí to tak hrdinsky, ako napríklad Rick Grimes zo seriálu The Walking Dead, ale v jeho čine sa odrazí obyčajná ľudskosť človeka na dne, ktorý sa zmieril so svojím osudom a odpustil nielen svojim blízkym, ale aj sebe.
Príťažlivé archetypy predstavujú aj doktorka Nora Martinezová či syn Ephrama Goodweathera Zachary. Zachary aj Nora intenzívne bojujú so smenou, ktorú so sebou tajomný Majster a jeho anarchia prinášajú. Neboja sa urobiť scénu, za niečím si tvrdo stáť, odmietajú poslušnosť... hľadajú vlastné hranice, snažia sa prekročiť svoj tieň, poprieť v sebe svoje ja a mnoho ráz sa vrhajú do nebezpečenstva, len aby si niečo dokázali. Na jednej strane veci komplikujú, na tej druhej odzrkadľujú to, čo je pre ľudí v bezvýchodiskovej situácii príznačné – strach. Pre čitateľa pôsobia návykovo. Svojou silnou osobnosťou ho držia v napätí, a tak pomáhajú prítomnému rozprávačovi nevyložiť všetky karty na stôl skôr, ako je to pre zvrat v deji žiadané.
Guillermo del Toro a Chuck Hogan svojou zvláštnou vedecko-fantastickou trilógiou (v dobrom slova zmysle) neurobili vlastne nič iné, len nastavili ľudskej rase zrkadlo. Pomocou fantastických prvkov, ktorými zjemnili naturalistickú linku v deji, vyzdvihujú myšlienku druhého Holokaustu. Toto citlivé miesto v dejinách nezhadzujú, práve naopak, upozorňujú na rovnaký vzorec správania, ktorý môže časom priniesť katastrofu podobného rozmeru. Napriek tomu, že aj ich námet čerpá zo známych tém, myšlienok, ideí či, dokonca, literárnych predlôh, je v konečnom dôsledku zaujímavý, pretože sa spracoval na dnešné pomery originálne.
Fanúšikovia tohto mexického režiséra možno v knižnej trilógii neobjavia nič nové. Romány ich však neurazia, dovolia im zaspomínať si na staré dobré časy i stráviť niekoľko pekných chvíľ v spoločnosti dobrých kníh. Ak si odmyslíme nedostatky v podobne rozvláčnych pasáží, ktoré so sebou priniesli denníkové vsuvky jednotlivých postáv, plynulo všetko rýchlo, hladko i pútavo. Samozrejme, tri knižné romány, ktoré od tejto chvíle budete poznať pod hromadným označením The Strain, sú určené hlavne pre čitateľov, ktorí majú radi podobnú zmes žánrov a nevadí im nadmerné množstvo monologických statí či faktografické repliky. Určené sú aj pre tých odvážlivcov, ktorým nerobí problém čítať medzi riadkami a puntičkársky nelipnú na korektnosti jednotlivých údajov, predsa len ide o fikciu, ktorá svoj inšpiračný zdroj našla v jemne prikrášlenej histórií či folklóre.
Podobne ako iné fantastické príbehy aj trilógia The Strain sa snaží osloviť dnešného čitateľa a čo-to prispôsobiť jeho potrebám alebo nárokom. Zároveň si však zachováva svoju tvár a jednoducho baví, pretože beletria je aj o tom - pobaviť netradične. A to títo dvaja páni zvládli výborne.

Od prvého až po posledný diel prechádza Ephram Goodweather niekoľkými premenami. Všetky sú úzko prepojené s udalosťami, ktoré so sebou prináša neznámy vírus meniaci ľudí na strigoi. Raz je hore, raz dole, nad vodou sa snaží držať svojsky – nadmernou spotrebou liekov a alkoholom. Prichádza o všetko, a aj napriek tomu dokáže pozbierať sily na to, aby niečo pre náš svet urobil. Neurobí to tak hrdinsky, ako napríklad Rick Grimes zo seriálu The Walking Dead, ale v jeho čine sa odrazí obyčajná ľudskosť človeka na dne, ktorý sa zmieril so svojím osudom a odpustil nielen svojim blízkym, ale aj sebe.
Príťažlivé archetypy predstavujú aj doktorka Nora Martinezová či syn Ephrama Goodweathera Zachary. Zachary aj Nora intenzívne bojujú so smenou, ktorú so sebou tajomný Majster a jeho anarchia prinášajú. Neboja sa urobiť scénu, za niečím si tvrdo stáť, odmietajú poslušnosť... hľadajú vlastné hranice, snažia sa prekročiť svoj tieň, poprieť v sebe svoje ja a mnoho ráz sa vrhajú do nebezpečenstva, len aby si niečo dokázali. Na jednej strane veci komplikujú, na tej druhej odzrkadľujú to, čo je pre ľudí v bezvýchodiskovej situácii príznačné – strach. Pre čitateľa pôsobia návykovo. Svojou silnou osobnosťou ho držia v napätí, a tak pomáhajú prítomnému rozprávačovi nevyložiť všetky karty na stôl skôr, ako je to pre zvrat v deji žiadané.
Guillermo del Toro a Chuck Hogan svojou zvláštnou vedecko-fantastickou trilógiou (v dobrom slova zmysle) neurobili vlastne nič iné, len nastavili ľudskej rase zrkadlo. Pomocou fantastických prvkov, ktorými zjemnili naturalistickú linku v deji, vyzdvihujú myšlienku druhého Holokaustu. Toto citlivé miesto v dejinách nezhadzujú, práve naopak, upozorňujú na rovnaký vzorec správania, ktorý môže časom priniesť katastrofu podobného rozmeru. Napriek tomu, že aj ich námet čerpá zo známych tém, myšlienok, ideí či, dokonca, literárnych predlôh, je v konečnom dôsledku zaujímavý, pretože sa spracoval na dnešné pomery originálne.
Fanúšikovia tohto mexického režiséra možno v knižnej trilógii neobjavia nič nové. Romány ich však neurazia, dovolia im zaspomínať si na staré dobré časy i stráviť niekoľko pekných chvíľ v spoločnosti dobrých kníh. Ak si odmyslíme nedostatky v podobne rozvláčnych pasáží, ktoré so sebou priniesli denníkové vsuvky jednotlivých postáv, plynulo všetko rýchlo, hladko i pútavo. Samozrejme, tri knižné romány, ktoré od tejto chvíle budete poznať pod hromadným označením The Strain, sú určené hlavne pre čitateľov, ktorí majú radi podobnú zmes žánrov a nevadí im nadmerné množstvo monologických statí či faktografické repliky. Určené sú aj pre tých odvážlivcov, ktorým nerobí problém čítať medzi riadkami a puntičkársky nelipnú na korektnosti jednotlivých údajov, predsa len ide o fikciu, ktorá svoj inšpiračný zdroj našla v jemne prikrášlenej histórií či folklóre.
Podobne ako iné fantastické príbehy aj trilógia The Strain sa snaží osloviť dnešného čitateľa a čo-to prispôsobiť jeho potrebám alebo nárokom. Zároveň si však zachováva svoju tvár a jednoducho baví, pretože beletria je aj o tom - pobaviť netradične. A to títo dvaja páni zvládli výborne.

'Nocturna' es la 1ª novela de la trilogía y la leerás de una sentada como te descuides. Engancha, y mucho (experiencia propia). La 2ª, 'Oscura', vuelve a sorprenderte y, cuando pensabas que no podían sucederle más cosas a tus personajes... les suceden! Pero esto mejora la historia :)
Por último 'Eterna'... como su nombre indica, y cuando ya te has leído las otras dos novelas, sabes que todo lo que has leído, puede ir a peor y que los vampiros no tienden a ser majos.
Al leer la sinopsis reconoceréis el guiño que hacen los autores (el gran director de cine Guillermo del Toro y Chuck Hogan, escritor y guionista de cine) a 'Drácula' de Bram Stoker.

La serie a mí no me gustó, porque como siempre ocurre en estos casos, el libro ofrece el doble de emoción que la serie (aunque es muy fiel y su calidad es innegable)

Im vorliegenden Band mit dem Titel „Die Saat - The Strain“ befindet sich der komplette Zyklus von drei Bänden der beiden Autoren Guillermo del Toro und Chuck Hogan - beides nicht gerade unbekannte Namen, insbesondere del Toro konnte als Regisseur sehr gelungene Akzente im Filmbusiness setzen.
Nun ein Werk in Zusammenarbeit, in dem die Welt der Vampire um eine weitere Darbietung fortgesetzt werden soll. Interessanterweise scheint diese Idee von Anfang an zu funktionieren - vor allem der geschickte Start mit den Insassen eines Passagierflugzeuges und im Nachgang die an klassischen Vampirmythen abweichende Art des Erzählens sorgt für eine spannende Erfrischung des Genres.
Der erste Band „Die Saat“ führt dem Vampirgenre interessante Aspekte hinzu beziehungsweise führt neue Aspekte ein. Hier gibt es keinen Gentleman-Vampir der alten Garde sondern hungrige Wesen, die wie ein Sturm über die Menschheit hinwegfegen.
„Die Saat“ zeigt sich somit durchweg als interessanter Baustein des Genres und macht nahezu von vorne bis hinten Spaß und sorgt dementsprechend für eine spannende Unterhaltung, die - auch durch den Cliffhanger am Ende - nach weiteren Episoden lechzen lässt.
„Das Blut“ wirkt ähnlich ambitioniert, schafft leider nicht den Status des ersten Bandes aufrecht zu halten. Während man bei „Die Saat“ noch ein Auge auf die etwas dünne Charakterentwicklung zudrücken konnte, fällt das im zweiten Buch bereits schwerer, da die Geschichte das aufgebaute Niveau nicht mehr halten kann und dadurch andere Punkte verstärkt in den Vordergrund drängen und sich somit nicht mehr hinter einem spannenden Plot verstecken können. Nichts desto trotz lässt sich auch „Das Blut“ noch recht gut konsumieren, während leider der finale Band in eine gewissen Belanglosigkeit fällt und dem Zyklus nichts mehr hinzufügen kann. Ich denke, hier wäre in der Gesamtheit weniger mehr gewesen und mit einem grandiosen Schluss des ersten Bandes hätte das Genre ein neues i-Tüpfelchen bekommen, während durch die beiden Fortsetzungen der gesamte Zyklus leider nicht gleichwertig weiter erzählt wird und somit in seiner Gänze nicht zu einem Nachhaltigen Ende kommt.
Nichts desto trotz freue ich mich im Nachgang, „Die Saat“ gelesen zu haben, da hierin die Story noch außerordentlich gut funktioniert.

Da es jetzt die Serie gibt – würde ich es nicht mehr lesen….geb ich zu…..Aber ich kann diese Reihe empfehlen. Es ist sehr Spannend und ich bin froh, dass ich es gelesen habe bevor es auf der Mattscheibe flimmert. Also Ihr Leseratten….ran an diese Bücher…..Vielleicht schafft Ihr es noch bevor die Serie startet….es würde sich lohnen….Ich freu mich aber auch auf die Serie….(wenn es wie bei Walking Dead ist….stimmt irgendwann eh nichts mehr mit dem Buch überein ;-) )

Gib mir mehr! Ich weiß, dass es drei Teile in einem sind, aber ich bin mit dieser Welt einfach noch nicht fertig. Die Serie war gut, auch wenn sie sich zu Ende hin etwas gezogen hat. Das Buch hingegen ist durchweg fantastisch. Gib mir ein Prequel oder ein Sequel! Ich möchte unbedingt noch mehr von den Strigoi sehen und lesen.

I enjoyed this vampire/virus trilogy. Pretty fast paced with well written characters that I was able to connect with. I really wanted to find out what happens to all of them. I am glad I bought this so I can read it again.

The first volume is absolutely entrancing. The second one drags a little but it's still very good. Then the conclusion of the trilogy gives you mixed feelings.

Die Welt wird von einer Seuche heimgesucht, von der zuerst nicht klar ist, worum es sich handelt. Doch dann offenbaren die Vampire ihre wahre Natur und die Dinge nehmen ihren Lauf.
Wir begleiten Dr. Ephraim Goodweather und sein Team, wie sie sich der Seuche annehmen und wie die Welt im Chaos versinkt. Das Schicksal der Menschheit nimmt ihren Lauf - doch ist es wirklich das Ende?
Der Schreibstil der Autoren fand ich unheimlich gut! Sie haben sich viel Mühe mit Details gegeben und man konnte sich sehr gut in die verschiedenen Charaktere eindenken. Auch das Setting fand ich klasse - es wurde einem wirklich viel geboten.
Dennoch hatte ich mit der Trilogie meine Mühe. Besonders Band 1 hat es mir nicht einfach gemacht, in die Geschichte reinzufinden. Für mich hat sich der Einstieg und auch die Entwicklung der Seuche sehr in die Länge gezogen. Erst gegen Ende des ersten Buches wurde es richtig interessant und dann hat mich die Geschichte in ihren Bannd gezogen.
Die Geschichte insgesamt hat mir gut gefallen. Die Vampire hatten viele klassische Züge, aber auch ein paar neue Eigenheiten, die mir gut gefallen haben. Ich möchte hier nicht näher darauf eingehen - man sollte selbst herausfinden, wie die Vampire in diesem Buch dargestellt werden.
Es gibt ordentlich Blut und Action; besonders diese Szenen haben mir sehr sehr gut gefallen. Leider haben mir die Emotionen in diesem Buch gefehlt bzw. sie sind nicht bei mir angekommen. An der ein oder anderen Stelle hätte ich mir wirklich mehr Gefühle gewünscht, weil es einfach zur Situation gepasst hätte.
Generell waren die Bücher für mich ein Einziges Auf und Ab- nicht bezüglich der Handlung, sondern weil es immer wieder Längen gab, die man auch anders hätte lösen können. Mehr Konstante und mir hätte das Buch besser gefallen. Schade, dass das Niveau des Buches so geschwankt hat.
Was ich vom Ende halten soll, weiss ich eherlich gesagt nicht. 1. ging es mir zu schnell und zweitens finde ich es nicht befriedigend. Was ich genau erwartet habe, kann ich nicht sagen, aber auf jeden Fall mehr, als was ich bekommen habe.
Die Charaktere haben mir mehr oder weniger gut gefallen. Sie sind sehr detailliert dargestellt worden und besonders Quinlan mochte ich unheimlich gerne (was aus ihm wird, gefällt mir ehrlich gesagt überhaupt nicht - hier hätten sich die Autoren gerne mehr einfallen lassen können). Alles in allem gute Charaktere, die zur Geschichte gepasst haben.
Für Vampirfans ist die Trilogie auf jeden Fall was und man sollte sich die Bücher, trotzt den Kritikpunkten, nicht entgehen lassen.

This definitely has a great beginning, and the rest of the story is good. It's a little bit of a different twist to the usual vampire story, with a more thorough explanation of what happens to the body when infected (treating it as a virus). Good story overall, though I don't know how much I'd want to go back and read it again (I give more stars to books I want to buy and read again).
For the first book, I haven't read either author (I know del Toro from a few movies, but never read Hogan) before, so I don't know whose style it was, but whoever did had a very heavy, unrefined hand with emphasizing the foreshadowing and symbolism of the eclipse and darkness. It was very "It was a dark and stormy night" type of beginning. I'm very glad that lightened up after about half or 3/4 of the way through the first book.
As a side note, the FX series is also interesting, but diverges quite wildly by the end of the first season. It's another case of wondering why it's so different when the book series was good enough that it didn't need to be changed. But one of the creators of the book is also behind the tv series, so it's doubly odd why it would be so different.

For the last book, it was very interesting reading about Eph. It was easy to be frustrated with him and his singular obsession with his son, but, from a parent's perspective, understandable. It was evident that Setrakian thought Eph was the one that could best take his place when he died and was trying to get Eph in place for it. It was Setrakian's focus for pretty much his entire life, so he was desperate to make sure someone could pick up and finish what he knew he could not. Eph really was the best choice, but it was interesting to see how he didn't fulfill his potential with it and why. My family is intact, so I can only imagine what it would be like to lose the marriage tie with your spouse, and then bit by bit lose that daily contact and closeness with your only child. He knew Kelly was turned and that hurt him, so his only hope and focus was to make sure his son wasn't taken as well. When his son was physically taken, he was so worried and terrified about Zach being turned that it broke him. The last book is about what that obsession cost not only Eph, but those around him and the rest of the world. The others in his group desperately needed him, but he was not entirely reliable. It was very interesting to read that from the perspective of a parent, recognizing the power behind the bond with a child, but also how that can cost in other areas.

I read this book series as a 13-year old. I think they did a great job at being unsettling. I was a crazy paranoid kid who would stay "on guard" to fight off the worm-infested vampires. I didn't sleep much back in the day and hormones made me somewhat crazy. I have fond memories. LOL. I began watching the series recently, I think the book is better. It has much less plot-holes than the TV series(and your mind has better special effects), so I recommend reading the books first.
Things I liked about the series:
1. Mr. Quinlan-One of my all-time favorite characters. He's just so badass! I never thought I could have a crush on a creature that looks similar to Voldemort(in the books, he somehow managed to be cute in the TV show, still badass though). I like both versions of Quinlan, in the book he is more quiet, and respects the ancients, in the series, he's that cocky, irreverent badass.
2. Abraham Setrakian-Most badass grandpa EVER! It was his past that snared me into reading the book. The book starts out by giving you a glimpse into his past, in a very GDT fashion.
3. Vampire body horror and physiology-It is disturbing and interesting at the same time, like watching those videos where pimples are popped. Satisfying yet disturbing.
Things I disliked:
1. Eph and his ilk..... need I say more?
2. Too many damn characters.... we're introduced to so many different POV's from random people. I found these people annoying for the most part. I didn't care for them.
3. Although I did like the folk-tale aspect of the strigoi's origin, I felt the jump from sci-fi to bible/folk tales was TOO SUDDEN on book 3.

Good thriller, breathing new life into both the seemingly-saturated field of global pandemics and vampire thrillers. Instead of a zombie plague descending upon the world, what if vampirism were spread like a virus, which infects its host body and converts it into a grotesque organism, subject to one monstrous will? These vampires also don't conform to most of the usual movie folklore. The build-up in the first volume is especially suspenseful. The authors took pains to humanize their protagonists, almost to the point where you dislike one of the main characters for his obtuseness and occasional callowness. Yet you can still empathize with him and the others. It has plenty of interesting plot twists and turns, and not everyone survives whom you think should. What really sets this apart from other similar books is its incorporation of technical detail, its characterization, its de-emphasis of magic, and elaborate back story. The closest works I can compare this to is Richard Matheson's I Am Legend (don't be misled by its various adaptations, though the Italian-made Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price is actually the closest) and, to a lesser extent, Dan Simmons' Carrion Comfort. While there are plenty of other books about zombie plagues, I think you should give this one consideration for all of the reasons cited above. Read Stephen King's Salem's Lot, Matheson, and Simmons, along with his Children of the Nightif you like your vampires unromanticized, unlike those of Stephanie Meyer.

Read the whole series in a couple of sittings... mostly reading through to see where this train wreck of a story would end up. Kind of like eating junk food, it was so bad it somehow kept me enthralled.
The characters are one dimensional, and vaguely offensive - every character is a racial and/or gender stereotype personified. I felt particularly sorry for poor Nora who starts off promisingly as the #2 of a CDC office and gets swiftly demoted to babysitter, and an incompetent one at that. The writing is pretty weak, with some jarring attempts at cleverness. I think we got that vampires move with preternatural grace after the 7th time they were described that way!
