While finishing her PhD in French Literature, she wrote her first novel, Truismes (Pig Tales) which was published in September 1996 by Paul Otchakovsky-Laurens (POL), who have published all her subsequent novels as well. After the success of Truismes, Darrieussecq decided to quit her teaching position at the University of Lille to concentrate on writing her novels. Her first husband was a mathematician, her second is an astrophysicist. She gave birth to a son in 2001 and to a daughter in 2004.

I read this book in one sitting.
I can't even remember the number of times I was on the verge of tears; it's engaging, chilling and thought-altering. A few pages in & it already began to present amazing insight.
It opened my eyes to death, grief and mourning in a way that nothing else has before. It is a novel that makes you confront your own mortality and humanity.
Exceptionally written, almost feels as though it is part of the author itself; I found myself thinking 'Is this a true story?' numerous times. Darrieussecq has a talent for being powerfully descriptive but mysterious at the same time - only revealing details when the scene has been perfectly set.
Definitely a book that needs to exist, and one that needs to be read by all.
For those who can't understand French, I highly recommend seeking out a translation!

Tom Is Dead by Marie Darrieussecq is an emotionally charged book.
I first read it in French a few years ago and could not finish it; Nothing to do with the quality of the writing which was superb, but more with the fact that it hit a bit too close to home.
I just re-read it in English this year and managed to go through. I guess the timing was better and English remains a second language to me and I am more detached.
I could therefore appreciate the story better and not be too affected by the emotions.
Very well written, very well translated, not over sentimental although it generates many emotions, and to some extent some relief.
The author never pretended that she experienced the loss of a child, and the readers should not take this book as a testament of what a mother feels when she looses a child. It is a good, well grounded, well researched and well written emotional fiction.

An absolute majestic and powerful masterpiece! My God, the narrative is incredible intense and emotional.
I recognized the grief from own experiences, which isn't similar to the main character's, but I have never been able to fully put words on it. And here is Darrieussecq describing it so obviously, respectfully and absolutely amazingly.
This book alone earns a Nobel Prize.

J’aime ne pas savoir si j’ai aimé ou détesté ce livre. Tom est mort, si le titre n’était pas clair, les 247 pages du roman vous le confirmeront. peut être ce tournant obsessionnel est-il trop au devant de la scène, peut-être nous sentons nous gênés, effrayés même devant la présence acculante de Tom qui prend le pied sur l’intrigue : mort de l’intrigue aussi. « Tous innocents, tous ignorants : qu'avais-je à faire des amours, des péripéties, des histoires? Que savait Stendhal de la mort des enfants? Virginia Woolf, suicide chic, suicide de chochotte. Luxe de Proust écrivant dans son lit! Les livres, je les jetais dans les cartons. » elle les jette dans les cartons comme la dernière page nous jette la mort de Tom dans la figure, violemment, brutalement, d’un coup sec avant de partir en courant. Peut être l’ai-je après tout aimé. Je l’ai détesté, aimé: paradoxalement, comme l’est la mort, dicible par l’indicible.

Un peu curieux toutefois de décortiquer avec autant de talent le thème de la mort, et d'évoquer tranquillement une dinde aux marrons, du foie gras, des steaks, comme si ce n'était pas aussi de la mort. La narratrice verrait la mort dans les moindres détails du quotidien, un parfum, un mot, un objet, mais elle ne la verrait pas dans la chair morte d'un animal ? Elle décrit avec brio la décomposition des chairs de son enfant, mais les chairs en décomposition des oiseaux qu'elle mange ne lui évoqueraient rien ? Une invraisemblablance regrettable, l'idéologie carniste gâche jusqu'à la littérature.

Such a difficult book to read. As a mother, this is my worst nightmare....the death of a child. The writer describes her grief, which was almost a temporary insanity, and her slow, slow, rebuilding of a ‘new normal’ without Tom.
I guess it might bring some relief to others in same awful situation...to know you are not alone in your sorrow induced madness.
As the book cover says “illuminates those parts of life other writers cannot it do not wish to illuminate”.

L'introspection d'une mère dévastée par la mort de son fils Tom à Sydney, en Australie. Elle a un conjoint et a deux autres enfants, Vince et Stella. Impossible pour elle de se remettre de ce deuil. J'ai eu un peu de mal avec le style, qui ressemble à de l'écriture automatique, bien que parfois cela donne l'impression que ce n'en est pas. L'histoire avance très lentement, je pense qu'elle aurait pu être racontée en 100 pages de moins.

3.5. Le manque ou l’absence suite à la perte d’un enfant est très bien décrit. Des moments très touchants. Suite à la sortie de son roman Marie Derrieussecq a été accusé de plagiat par Camille Laurens qui avait écrit Philippe sur la mort de son garçon. Elle disait que certains passages étaient vraiment empruntés car comment écrire des senti.ents aussi sentis lorsque l’on a pas vécu ce drame.

Heel mooi geschreven en knap ingeleefd in de gevoelens van een moeder na het overlijden van haar kind. Vaak zijn dit soort boeken autobiografisch, maar ik begrijp dat dat in dit geval niet zo is. Dat heeft in Frankrijk nog tot een relletje geleid. Alsof je niet over zo'n onderwerp mag schrijven als je het niet zelf hebt meegemaakt.

C'est un livre très fort, même si au fil des pages j'avais l'impression d'une certaine répétition ... C'est de la douleur pure, mais pas comme elle me touche le plus ; une exploration de tout ce qui peut la constituer, mais de manière assez uniforme finalement. Peut-être que j'ai besoin d'un peu plus de .. factuel, d'ancrage dans le réel et non dans l'esprit.

Comme la quatrième de couverture l’annonce, Tom est mort n’est pas le genre de lecture à prévoir si vous avez besoin de quelque chose de réconfortant… Je n’avais jamais rien lu de Darrieussecq et j’avais trouvé ce livre dans une brocante, c’était donc l’occasion. En plus, j’avais déjà entendu parler du livre et il m’intéressait pour son contexte… je vous en parle après.
C’est donc un livre sur le deuil et plus particulièrement sur la mort d’un enfant. Mais le décès de Tom n’est que le déclencheur, le roman explore plutôt les sentiments de la mère, son désarroi, sa culpabilité, sa colère. L’auteure parvient à exprimer le deuil du personnage sans que ce soit « simplement » direct. En écrivant à la première personne, elle nous permet de voir les choses du point de vue du personnage. Après ce drame, tout est déformé. Tout lui fait penser à Tom, dans la maison où ils venaient d’emménager en Australie bien sûr, mais également à l’extérieur. Au point où la mère commence à voir et entendre Tom, à le chercher dans sa chambre, dans le miroir…
Je ne sais pas trop comment parler de ce livre. Il n’y a bien sûr pas de réelle « action » ou intrigue, tout est dans le ressenti, les sentiments du personnage principal. D’ailleurs, la cause de la mort de Tom n’est jamais explicitement mentionnée. Finalement, peu importe. Seul l’après compte. La forme même du roman, les phrases courtes, le passage brusque d’une pensée à une autre, tout ramène à l’idée de deuil, de perdition et de douleur.
Ce qui m’intéresse le plus dans ce livre, c’est son histoire publication, dont j’avais entendu parler il y a quelques années. En effet, après la publication du roman de Marie Darrieussecq, Camille Laurens l’a accusée de plagiat « psychique ». Les deux auteures sont publiées chez P.O.L. et Camille Laurens a publié, quelques années auparavant, son livre Philippe sur la mort et le deuil de son enfant. Un récit autobiographique, là où celui de Marie Darrieussecq est une fiction. Camille Laurens clame que Darrieussecq aurait plagié certaines de ses références dans son livre, certaines tournures de phrases, voire la syntaxe. Mais surtout, elle lui reproche d’avoir écrit sur la mort d’un enfant, qu’elle n’a jamais vécu, alors que sa douleur à elle, son écriture à elle, était bien réelle. Tout cela soulève le débat concernant ce que quelqu’un peut écrire ou non : seulement ce dont il a connaissance, ce qu’il a pu expérimenter ?

No plot spoilers here … but then, if you are reading for plot, best look elsewhere. This is a quiet but trenchant meditation on the death of a loved one; in this case, the four-year-old son of the narrator, a woman whose name we never learn. Her personal circumstances are revealed to us bit by bit, filtered through her complex grief, so that reading the book feels as if we are intruding on someone’s private journals or personal letters to a close friend. The writing parallels the narrator’s emotional experience in its tone, vacillating between numbness, detachment, guilt, longing, rage, and raw anguish. I felt as if I were having to hold on tight through this, sensing but never knowing why the child died, right up to the denouement, where the circumstances of the boy’s death are described in words as ordinary and spare as his life.
This was my introduction to Marie Darrieussecq, and I came away from it wanting to read more of her work. Tom is Dead is a beautiful book. I couldn’t put it down, by which I mean that I read the first few pages initially, and then went out for a few hours, after which I returned home and read straight through until 5.00 a.m. My university French abandoned me some time ago, so I had to read an English translation by Lia Hills, but I think it is a worthy one. Best read with a bottle of red, I think!

Well written. Set in Blue Mountains a mother writes 10 years later about her son Tom who died when he was 4. Long, emotional and at times boring. Having never experienced something like that I kept wondering why she didn't seem to be able to move on at all, and how her husband could still be with her. She didn't seem to make much affort to engage with life. Tried counselling and group workshops, moving house but nothing seemed to help. It was all about her feelings about Tom and his death and probably could have been shorter. Probably an accurate description of what a mother goes thourhg, but I just wanted to shake her.
In a way it was a thriller - I kept wondering what had happended to Tom - but resisted turning to the last page where all was revealed (fell from a window). It was alluded to at one point in the novel. But I had to force myself to keep going so I could find out.

Eens met eerdere reacties Heel levensecht beschreven hoe vreselijk het moet zijn je kind te verliezen. Soms bijna te pijnlijk om te lezen.
Een herinnering bij de shampoo:
'Het verleden is tegenwoordig, tegenwoordig in het heden, zodra ik de fles opendraai. Mijn hart slaat over in mijn borst en het doet pijn. Tom zit in die fles. De tijd staat stil. Een lachende mond, een plastic eendje, natte bruine haren, wasem. Daar is hij. De pijn is onverslijtbaar'
Een opmerking vond ik erg vreemd en kan ik niet plaatsen. Ze denkt: 'Ik zou mijn armen en benen hebben gegeven om Tom terug te krijgen. Ik zou Vince en Stella hebben gegeven.' Vince en Stella zijn haar andere kinderen. En dat begrijp ik niet en vind ik best heel vreselijk om te zeggen....

C'est un livre sans doute très juste écrit sur la mort d'un enfant mais j'ai l'impression qu'il ne m'en reste rien, je n'y ai pas été sensible, il ne m'a pas parlé. Je l'ai emprunté à la bibliothèque, me souvenant qu'il avait fait du bruit à sa sortie. Qui, l'ayant lu en 2007, y repense aujourd'hui ? (à mon avis, pas grand monde).
C'est bien écrit, j'ai apprécié l'idée de notation proposée par la folie monomaniaque de la narratrice, il y a de bonnes idées...

Very intense novel by French writer about the death of her 4 year old son, Tom, who dies while the family are in Australia. The cause of death is never revealed, though it is hinted at by the end. The main focus of the novel is the mother's anguish, which she can never seem to overcome, even though her husband and family seem to be able to move on.

On the one hand it is 5 stars but it does drag a little around 2/3rds through. This is a very powerful book. One knows at the beginning that it is a novel but I became quite convinced that it was true. For me, once read, it brought on one of the worst nightmares that I have ever experienced and I sobbed for over an hour, once awakened by my husband. Powerful, or perhaps it is a Mother thing!

J'ai eu beaucoup de difficulté à lire ce livre au complet. Peut-être parce que j'ai un petit garçon, de quelques années seulement plus âgé que Tom. Je peux comprendre en partie la peine de la mère, mais je n'ai pas réussi à m'identifier à elle.

Bof. Au début, j'ai été vraiment séduite par l'écriture, mais j'ai fini par me lasser, ça tourne en rond, pas de chapitres, une trame narrative mince. Disons qu'il faut être dans un mood trèèèèès mélancolique pour vraiment l'apprécier.

This book is swollen with sorrow and grinds its way through the stages of grief. Not an easy read by any stretch.
