Nikolai Dubov

He is the author of the plays At the Threshold (staged in 1948) and Morning is Coming (staged in 1950), the novellas At the Earth’s End (1951), Lights on the River (1952), Overcome by Fear (1963), The Boy at the Seashore (1963), and The Fugitive (1966), and the novel Too Bad to Be Lonely (book 1, “The Orphan,” 1955, book 2, “A Stiff Test,” 1960; State Prize, 1970). Dubov’s works are concerned with acute contemporary problems and the turning points in the lives of young people—most frequently those of adolescents. His novellas Lights on the River and The Boy at the Seashore have been made into motion pictures.

I have read a Malayalam translation of this book. During my childhood, I found it in my father's book collection and started reading it casually. With the turn of each page I got immersed into the life of 'Kostya Ivanovich', the young lad through whom the story unfolds. The novel takes the reader into another world, where Kostya's dreams, thoughts and adventures with his uncle are played. Only few books take the reader into another world and definitely this is one of those great books.
There are multiple instances during my life (I am 28 now) when I thought of reading the original English version (Though the actual original version would be Russian), but it seems it is not available now.
I recommend this book for adults as well as for children.

রুশ সাহিত্য বেশ সমৃদ্ধ বলেই জানি। এর আগে দুয়েকটা পড়েছিলাম সম্ভবত। এবার পড়লাম লেখক নিকোলাই দুভোবের 'সাগরতীরে'। বইটা মূলত দুইটি আখ্যান গঠিত। প্রথমটি "নদীর বুকে আলো" আর দ্বিতীয়টি "সাগরতীরে"। দুইটি আলাদা আলাদা গল্প হলেও বিষয়বস্তু হলো কিশোর সাহিত্য। তবে লেখকের লেখা এমন মুগ্ধকর যে তাতে ছোট-বড় সকলেই সাহিত্যরস খুঁজে পাবে সমান তালে।
" নদীর বুকে আলো" গল্পে কোস্তিয়া নামের কিশোর হলো নায়ক। সে নিপার নদীর পাশে একটা এলাকাতে তার মামারে কাছে বেড়াতে যায়। সেখানে তার তিন বন্ধু এবং মামাকে ঘিরে পুরো উপন্যাস এগিয়েছে।
আর দ্বিতীয়ত "সাগরতীরো" গল্পের নায়ক ছোট্ট সাশুক। জেলে পরিবারে তার জন্ম। প্রথমবারের মতো সমুদ্রতীরে আসে সে তার পরিবার এবং সম্প্রদায়ের মানুষের সাথে মাছ ধরতে। এখানে ঠাঁই পাই তার উচ্ছ্বাস, ছোট বয়সের একটা শিশুর চিন্তাভাবনা পরিবেশ ইত্যাদি।
নিকোলাই দুবোভের লেখা পড়ে যে কথা সবচেয়ে বেশি মনে এসেছে তা হলো, শিশুকে নিজের মতো করে ভাবতে দেওয়া উচিৎ। তার অবচেতন মনকে বিকাশিত হতে দিতে হবে। অযথা তাদের মনে দাগ কাটতে না দিয়ে তাদের গাইড করতে হবে।
এত সুন্দর লেখা অনেকদিন পড়ি না। মুগ্ধ হয়ে পাতার পর পাতা উলটিয়েছি। এই বইয়ের অনুবাকদ্বয় হচ্ছেন অরুণ সোম এবং ননী ভৌমিক। তাদের বিশাল ধন্যবাদ দেওয়া প্রয়োজন এমন সাবলীল আর ঝররে অনুবাদের জন্য। বই পড়তে গিয়ে চোখের সামনে ভেসে উঠছিলো ঘঠনাগুলো। অনেকসময় মনে হচ্ছিলো উত্তাল নদীতে কোস্তিয়া নয় বরং আমি আছি। সে যা অনুভব করছে তা আমি নিজেও অনুভব করছি। একই কথা খাটে দ্বিতীয় গল্পের ক্ষেত্রেও।
এই বই দাগ কেটে গিয়েছে মনের গহীনে…

Another awesome book by a Russian. I have read the book during my childhood and I still can remember the thrill of it.
It brought me a perception of the commune life in USSR where people work together. There life, their living-hood; school boys and girls and their sense of responsibility; enjoyment amidst the other daily chores; all these stories with beautiful description of the native people and the country made it a memory of lifetime.
It is sad that the book is no longer available.

Knygą sudaro du apsakymai, vienas iš jų apie mažą berniuką kuris su tėvais žvejais leidžia dienas prie juodosios jūros, kiekvieną dieną žiūri į gyvenimą smalsumo kupinomis akimis ir mokosi. Antrasis pasakojimas patiko mažiau, nes nors ir žvejų aplinka, tačiau gausu girtuoklystės, vaikų mušimo kuris būdingas sovietmečiu. Realiai sudėjus abiejų apsakymų vertinimus, gaunasi toks labiau vidutiniškas požiūris į šio autoriaus kūrybą tad, kad skaityčiaų kitas jo knygas labai abejoju.

রুশ সাহিত্যের সাথে পরিচয়ের একদম শুরুর দিকে পড়া বই এটা। বিশ্বসাহিত্য কেন্দ্রের কল্যানে এতো বছর পর আবার পড়লাম। বই পুনরায় পড়তে আমার কখনোই খারাপ লাগে না, আর যদি হয় এসব ক্লাসিক তাহলে তো কথাই নেই!
রুশ সাহিত্যে নিকোলাই দুবোভ আমার অন্যতম প্রিয় লেখক সেই ছোটবেলা থেকে।
অনুবাদ বেশ ঝরঝরে ছিল। টানা পড়ে গিয়েছি।
এসব বই পড়তে গেলে নস্টালজিক হয়ে পড়ি খুব।
রুশ সাহিত্যে নিকোলাই দুবোভ আমার অন্যতম প্রিয় লেখক সেই ছোটবেলা থেকে।
অনুবাদ বেশ ঝরঝরে ছিল। টানা পড়ে গিয়েছি।
এসব বই পড়তে গেলে নস্টালজিক হয়ে পড়ি খুব।

lots of memories tagged along this book. just finished reading it again this morning after 35 years. still I got the feeling of the space where Kostya lived with his cousin and friends . and just went through google map and tried to find out the places mentioned in the book. (dnierpar river,kyiv etc..) I really want to go and see the place where they live. which I know is not at all possible :(

এই বইতে দুটো উপন্যাস আছে। ১) নদীর বুকে আলোর মেলা। এই উপন্যাসে পাঠক কোস্তিয়ার মামা বাড়ির নদী কূলে কাটানো সময়ের আখ্যান জানতে পারবে। চমৎকার সে গল্প।
২) সাগর তীরে। এ উপন্যাসে পাঠক জানতে পারবে সাশুকের সাগর তীরে কাটানো সময়ের গল্প। ভারি সুন্দর সে গল্প।
বেশ উপভোগ্য একটা বই। অসাধারণ অনুবাদ। হারুন ভাইকে ভালোবাসা,এমন চমৎকার বইয়ের সন্ধান দেয়ার জন্য।
২) সাগর তীরে। এ উপন্যাসে পাঠক জানতে পারবে সাশুকের সাগর তীরে কাটানো সময়ের গল্প। ভারি সুন্দর সে গল্প।

This can be read by children, but it’s a book for grown ups. The author is telling us about the value of childhood through an account that’s in parts wistful and in the most part fondly nostalgic about the beauty of growing up. I loved the book.

আমার পড়া অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ বই । অনেকদিন এরকম সুন্দর বই পড়া হয়নি। বাচ্চাদের জন্য ,বিশেষত টিন এজ ছেলে মেয়েদের জন্য আদর্শ একটা বই।
