Slow moving cosy history
I enjoyed the novel well past midway , but it has an atmosphere of history within a history .The writing style and the behaviour of the characters seem antiquated and may reflect thought patterns of seventeenth century nobility , though I suspect it represents more the moral views of the author .
The long long and often unnecessary conversations which drag down the second part of the novel are tedious

Melodramatic history
Book could benefit from more editing. Changes in the story timeline were not smooth; on occasion this reader had to backtrack and reread preceding paragraphs to determine if a change of time/location had occurred.
Two stars because of overly wrought, melodramatic relationship between Mary and Rupert.

A traditional historical novel of the highest quality: meticulous research, immaculate prose and a gripping story told without any intrusive editorialising. Highly recommended.
