Zadie Smith is an English novelist, essayist, and short-story writer. Her debut novel, White Teeth (2000), immediately became a best-seller and won a number of awards. She became a tenured professor in the Creative Writing faculty of New York University in September 2010.
I didn’t buy this audiobook because I wanted to learn English, but because I’m a Zadie Smith fan and hadn’t known the short stories on the CD before. It was interesting to listen to them first (the narrators were actually quite good) and read them again afterwards. These three stories seem simple at first, but are in fact complex and richly layered. You have to look beneath the surface to catch the true meaning. Sometimes they reminded me a bit of Hemingway’s writing style. Luckily, the author is a modern woman, who’s much more progressive and open-minded.
