Third book by Mr Toop I've read, and the most difficult to appreciate. Is it an attempt at literary synesthesia?
One wishes for a gallery filled with the paintings he references to get the effect he's going for. As a dedicated sound artist, I find it much easier to bring to mind the sounds rather than the paintings, even the ones I am familiar with. Same with the books he references... all in all, a noble undertaking, for sure.
Just as the bull's-eye is at the centre, the oculus admits the light of reason. If the eyes are windows to the soul, the ears must be tunnels to some other place, some darker zone of unreason, or simply a channelling of inner feelings described, by implication, in common sayings, as too subtle and elusive for the rationalization of seeing.
