Kion and his sister Tiryn hunt for Vayd Mokàn, leader of the haukmar forces now conquering their land, but all they find are strange pools of shadow on the ground. If they do find him, though, will they be able to defeat him? For Vayd now possesses a glaive of his own, just like Kion and Tiryn. Yet, with their ever faithful friend, Zinder, to encourage and spur them on, they have not lost hope. Perhaps they can find others to join them, and together help them break the crushing grip of the haukmarn upon their lands. But they must bring Vayd’s deadly plans to a stop before things grow worse. Because with each passing day the shadows grow deeper and deeper. Read the third book in the epic Swordspeaker Saga series, a tale of legendary weapons and the heroes who wield them.
DJ Edwardson traveled a lot when he was younger. These days he’s busy crafting exotic destinations of his own. Although he has written both Science Fiction and Fantasy novels, he likes to say he writes in the “genre of imagination.”
He has a degree in English from Cornell College where his emphasis was on the works of Shakespeare. He’s tried his hand at both acting and directing in the theater, but these days is happiest with a pen in his hand. He lives in Tennessee with his family amidst an ever-growing library of wonderful books.

I must have highlighted half the book as I was reading, there were so many epic quotes and memorable moments in this story. Edwardson’s writing continues to take my breath away with its beauty and relatable themes.
Kion is reeling a bit from book 2 (as he definitely deserves to be… book 2 was rough on him), and this book has its own share of heart-stopping moments. But we also get to see Kion shouldering the responsibilities we’ve been hoping he would take up since book 1. And as he steps into his rightful role as a leader, he pulls others along with him as all good leaders should.
This series just continues to grow more epic, thematically deeper, and the characters are so real they step off the page. I didn’t just read this book… I lived it.
GRIMBRIAR is for readers who enjoy heavy action and battle and high fantasy with prose like dialogue that reminds me of the poet Lord Tennyson. The writing was beautiful and flawless, and I appreciate all of the work that went into the world and character building. The endings of chapters bring great closure with intrigue. It seems the author put a lot of work and passion into this. Bravo!
A few of my favorite quotes:
"We can only fight the battle in front of us."
"To dwell upon what could not be was a path to nowhere."
"...a voice of ruin, of bitterness and swollen offenses long guarded and nourished in dark and secret places."
"And that hope, simple and unadorned as it was, had not died."
*I received a pre-order copy of this book as part of a review team. All opinions and ratings are my own.
I enjoyed Grimbriar quite a lot - it's been great to see Kion and Tiran grow and mature, and learn more about this fabulous world DJ Edwardson is building. I also love Grimbriar's character and his new glaivebond, they both added an interesting new perspective. Totally looking forward to Mountainfall, the fourth book!
However, unlike the last two books, I did knock a star off because I wish the series could have been wrapped up by now. Honestly, if all three of the books had been one slightly longer book, I think the series would have benefited, since currently there is no conclusion in sight - in fact, it's getting farther away.
This third book of the saga did not disappoint! The stake continue to climb, but Kion with his family and friends found along the way always rise to the challenge. I'm excited to read Book 4!
Another excellent book in the Swordspeaker Saga. There are not a lot of fantasy works that rate high on my charts, and this series is one of the few. The writing style is good, but the story line, character development, and quality of content is excellent. This is one of the rare books that can captivate both me and my young children, and one of quality that I am grateful for them to read. Looking forward to the next installation!
