The Two Sillies Mary Ann Hoberman Gulliver Books, 2000
Summary: Lilly wants a pet cat, but hasn’t the foggiest idea of how to care for one. Her friend Sammy has some advice, but her attempts to follow it just make things worse. Because of their antics, the simple act of owning a cat gets turned into a zany adventure involving a cow, shed construction, and lumberjacking.
Genre: Picture Book
Content Warnings: None
My Opinion: This book was dumb. It reminded me The Three Stooges, but with a woman and more cats. Very slapstick-comedy-esque; it had no value at all other than offering cheap amusements. I’m kind of mad at myself for reading this for a picture book assignment instead of something else.
This rhyming story tells the tale of Silly Lilly and her friend Sammy. Lilly sees a cat and "she wants that" so she asks Sammy how to get it, and he gives her a bunch of tasks to complete in order to get the cat. First she has to cut down wood to build a shed to house a cow for them to milk to lure in the cat. The cat has kittens and they live happily ever after in their new shed with their cow and kittens.
Poetry. It was a very cute poetry book for younger kids, and definitely for older kids to read to younger kids. The flow wasn't always perfect, otherwise it would have been a 5 star. It is about two people who don't understand the processes of doing certain things, only that the things need to be done.
I LOVE Mary Ann Hoberman! Finally, a modern children's poet who writes verse that is actual worth reading. The Cozy Book and A House Is a House for Me are other favorites.
Funny and lovely story. The couple wants to have a pet cat, and they both make silly requests before adding the cat to their family. I enjoy very much reading it.
