Oh, no! Ricky Ricotta and his Mighty Robot have to spend all day playing with Ricky's cousin Lucy. How boring! But when a smelly space-monster named Sergeant Stinkbug lands in Squeakyville and kidnaps Lucy, things get much, much worse. Luckily, Ricky Ricotta has a BIG plan to get out of this stinky situation.
Originally published in 2003, this edition features brand-new full-color illustrations throughout!

2022 Review: * Ricky is going to his cousin Lucy's house but he doesn't want to go, she always wants to play princesses. * Sergent Stinkbug on Saturn decides that Saturn is too messy, and he wants to take over Earth. * Sergent Stinkbug sees Lucy playing princesses and thinks she's a real princess so kidnaps her. * The robot rescues Lucy, and Sergent Stinkbug uses gumballs to make his warriors bigger. * Ricky then uses the gumballs to grow bigger himself! * Ricky rescues his robot, and defeats the stinkbugs. * Lucy eats gumballs and rescues Ricky! Then she sends the stinkbugs back to Saturn. Sergent Stinkbug gets put in jail.
Interesting that Ricky got to save the day for once.
He read it today, so I thought it might be interesting and fun to get him to log his books on GR to help motivate his reading. Sort of like social media training wheels. He was pretty excited about the idea. I had him do everything himself, from finding the books, adding the shelves, rating, and his review. He said he couldn't think of anything else to say, and I told him it was perfect.
I actually read this to my boys a couple years back...not sure if they remember. We've read a lot of books together. Wish I recorded more of them.
Ricky Ricotta and his robot have to spend the day with his cousin, Lucy. Gag! She always wants to play princess. However, things take a different turn when the Stupid Stinkbugs from Saturn come and try to take over the planet. Things get pretty crazy!
So I haven't been really captured by any book recently. I guess some men experience ED during times of stress (we just moved and changed jobs); I, on the other hand, get stuck with a case of RD, Reading Disruption. Too bad Pfizer doesn't have some version of Literary Viagra that would have me fully engrossed in a book regardless of its merit. My problem certainly doesn't stem from lack of trying. I got my new library card on the second day in our new city. We have only been here two weeks and I already have late fees. I got magazines, books (fiction and non), music CD's, and audiobooks. All this and nothing but a sense of blah.
The only periods of reading excitement around here is during my 4 year old son's bed time. He discovered Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot vs. The Stupid Stinkbugs from Saturn by Dav Pikley. It is number six in a series that has various antagonists (Jurassic Jackrabbits, Uranium Unicorns, Mecha-Monkeys) emerging from the different planets (Jupiter, Uranus, Mars). If nothing else, he has learned alliteration. During the battle with the Stinkbugs my son quivers with excitement and usually ends up making the sound effects for the punching and kicking. It reminds me of my memory of the first time I saw Karate Kid when I was twelve. I couldn't help but reenact the final scene over and over again. How can I not read a book like that to my son.
In Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot Vs. The Stupid Stinkbugs from Saturn, Ricky has to go to his cousin Lucy's house. This mouse does not like going to Lucy's house because she always wants to play "princess" and Ricky does not. Luckily, something exciting happens instead. Sergeant Stinkbug flies to earth to inhabit it, but he believes that he must over rule who ever is currently in power. When the Sergeant looks at earth he sees Lucy wearing a crown and thinks she is the ruler of earth. Lucy, Ricky, The Mighty Robot, and Lucy's three Jurassic Jackrabbits must fight off the evil Sergeant Stinkbug and his stink bug army in order to save earth. Even though this books is considered a graphic novel, it does not follow the typical format of one. Most graphic novels have boxes an gutters while this story is filled with double page spreads with the text placed inside the picture. What also makes this graphic novel even more unique is its' "Flip-0-Rama." This adds a more cinematic quality to the book. Making it even more interesting and fun for its' readers.

Original review from 2014: My boys and I had fun reading our first novel together. It's hard to go wrong with a giant robot mouse and a villian named Sergeant Stinkbug.
I can hardly believe I'm pondering the number of stars to give a Ricky Ricotta book...and that now I'm going to tell you why! This one 'bugged' me. I don't like the word stupid--it's a bad word in our home so I had to skip over that as I read...I don't like any name-calling even if it is the bad guys. Also, the characters chew gumballs to get big and taffy to get small as opposed to previous Pilkey books where some machine zaps you into a giant whatever and I (being the over analytical critical thinker I am) was rubbed the wrong way by that--drug associations etc...I am probably just getting tired of Pilkey books and need a change.
We love Ricky Ricotta and his Mighty Robot. Christopher read this whole book in a couple of nights. There was a lot of alliteration in this book, and it was a fun opportunity to teach him that word. These books are pretty formulaic, but they're some much fun. Earth is in danger from Stinkbugs from Saturn in this book, but of course good triumphs over evil.
I like to they took names of the books and put the Names of planets into the book so then they Have planetes to put into each book and there's different bad guys from each Planet so then They Have how many books they have is 1 bad guy So Ⅰ book is 1 bad guy Ⅱ book is 2 bad guys And Ⅲ is 3 bad guys in the jail.
Stupid Stinkbugs from Saturn In the beginning the book told me the people who was in the book and the characters were Ricky and his Mighty Robot, Rickys aunt and uncle and Lucey. Looks like you will have to read the book to find out who Lucy is.In the middle the book said that the stink bugs live in Saturn. In Saturn it is TRASHED because of the stinkbugs. But now the want to trash the world but they have to get Lucy first. But that is not all the last part said the put the stink bugs in jail and Ricky's Mighty Robot flue everyone back to Lucy's house. The main thing I liked about this book is they do not leave you on a cliff and you do not know what is going to happen next because I LOVE book that do not leave me at a cliff because if they did it feels like you're about to fall off of the ciff. I mean like you will forget what you read. Because I HATE books that leave you at a cliff and you have to wait until they come out with the next book. The thing I DO NOT LIKE AT ALL is this book could of told the thing that we're happen in the story better because I like books that tell a lot of details in the story because I like to know what is fully knowing what is going on in the story. But the all the books are go so I kep reading them. If you like these kind of books Humour, Children's literature you will love this book it includes a princes and a stinkbugs and using your imagination then you will like this book. You con read the Mighty Robot book out of order because it tells you everything it wants you to know in just one of the books. If you are not a fan of reading then these books are for you because if you can find a quiet place you can read this book in one day.
Miss 3 loves Captain Underpants and now we've worked our way through almost all of Dav Pilkey's Ricky Ricotta books as well. They haven't captured her at the same level of sparkly LOVE as C. U. but she enjoys them enough to re-read them the following week. Although our library has these at the same reading level as C.U. they are much shorter and quicker to read. They're also more positive in general and a good entry for younger kids. As a parent, I love how the series works its way through the solar system and has little facts about each planet! Also, how the local jail slowly fills up with each arch-villain!
#2 Mercury : okay #3 Venus : okay #4 Mars : okay #5 Jupiter: We liked Lucy getting added. Plus the shift to a non-fighting resolution and now super-small super-cute Jurassic Jackrabbits becoming pets. #6 : Saturn: Featuring Lucy and the Jackrabbits too :) #7: Uranus : Featuring Lucy and the Jackrabbits too :) I loved all the alliteration in this one!
I was pleasantly surprised that my son and I were able to get through this book together in 3 bed times. He normally will not want to go back to a story we don't finish so we don't read many chapter books together. It was really hard for me to keep saying stupid because I normally don't use that word in front of my children. My son couldn't get enough of it and giggled every time I said it! I think that the funny language and dramatic invasion saving Ricky from an afternoon of playing princess really hits home for 2-4 graders as an independent read or small group read aloud. I am interested in having the whole series available in my classroom library!
Ricky Ricotta's Might Robot vs. The Stupid Stinkbugs from Saturn caught my eye at a book fair. The eye popping colors, robots, bad guys, and general silliness were perfect for my son. The book looks like a graphic novel, but without the text printed in little boxes. Text ranges from one to five sentences along with high quality illustrations. It has a chapter book format. The Ricky Ricotta series might do well for boys who prefer graphic novels and are reluctant readers.
When Ricky's cousin Lucy gets kidnapped by Stinkbugs from Saturn, he and his robot spring into action. This one has a surprising twist as Ricky chews some "grow gum" and is featured in the flip-o-rama fight scene instead of the robot. In another twist, Lucy chews even more gum and saves the day. What a fun adventure and the villain prison is filling right up!
If you like Captain Underpants u still love this!!
It has the same format like Captain Underpants house, story, comic and flip o Rama!! It's a great way to encourage kids to read and start a love for it.
The story has good morals such as learning and being a hero by keeping people safe
My 6 yr old loves these books but wasn't pleased to find they changed the original artist. Otherwise, the story is the basically the same in each one (give or take) but it's entertaining enough and it makes him excited to read so I'm all for that.
Ricky, his mighty robot and his parents are visiting his Aunt, Uncle and cousin Lucy. playing with Lucy's Princess game becomes a big adventure when Stinkbugs from Saturn try to invade Earth but teamwork from Ricky, Mighty Robot, Lucy and her Jurassic pets soon save the day. Fun read.
