Manageable in size and scope, this engaging, well-written text enables readers to form meaningful insights into the complex and fascinating history of the great land of Russia. This volume explores Russia's two- thousand-year struggle to be a powerful, cohesive nation, objectively examines its political development, captures the feel of the Russian land and people, and discusses its international relationships spanning several centuries.
I read this as an undergrad and had the pleasure of being in one of Mr Wren's seminars. (He hated the title "Doctor".) The book drew me to the history of a region I'd previously ignored. I'm still interested and now reading Massie's Peter the Great courtesy of a friend who found a copy in Mali several years ago! It's brought back fond memories of history discussions and much else at the Wren apartment in Toledo.
Reads like a college textbook, but an interesting one. In a period of a week or so while reading this, I felt like I was able to begin connecting the dots between what I knew from pop culture and literature to the actual progression of things... beyond the story of Catherine the Great and the movie "Reds" (just kidding, sort-of). I recommend it as a good crash course in history.
