Learn how to soothe sunburns, dry-clean your dog, and perform other household miracles with baking soda
Want to relieve your stuffy nose? Make your musty old books smell better? Kill roaches without pesticide? You can do it all with baking soda, and this updated edition of Baking Soda Bonanza shows you how! Cheap, ecologically sound, and more effective than most household cleaners, baking soda can be used to fix all sorts of household problems, from baking the perfect muffins to soothing bee stings to clearing out clogged drains. With a history of baking soda and many popular recipes for baking included, this is a book every household should have.
I initially thought this would be a book of recipes for baking soda uses, but it turned out it was much more than that. It started off with the history of baking soda, which I found to be very interesting and fascinating read. Yes, it did have homegrown recipes in it, many that I knew about, but many I didn't. Baking soda is a very cheap non-abrasive cleaner for so many things around the house (and for your health as well.)
It also described ways that baking soda aids in natural and human-made disasters in nature. (And while doing this, explains how these disasters happened. Wow. Was not expecting that sort of details in this book.) Again, a very enjoyable read.
There is a large, if not organized, collection of food recipes using baking soda at the end of the book...but that's not why I bought this book. (Well, I take that back, it is organized; the table of contents lists "Recipes," but no there is no division within that.) Following the edible recipes, came a section titled, "The Alternative Baking Soda Alternative." They should have named it exactly what this is, but I'll let the reader decide if I'm being too nit-picky or not. (Aside: I was more interested in the holistic recipes, which it does not disappoint in either.)
A "Biography," and "Searchable Terms," follow at the very end of the book. The latter is not a link collection, unfortunately...which would have made a lot more sense for an ebook, especially since page numbers are a non-static thing for ereaders.
Very glad I downloaded this book. I took my time reading this in small spaces, since, for the most part, that was the best way to enjoy the book. I did dog-ear many pages to come back to and placed it my reference folder on my ebook reader. I also found myself reading it in between breaks of other books, or else I would have had it read in one day. Kind of a nice break-up between reading fiction books.
Four stars, for not only the recipes, and homegrown advice, but also the history! (7/6-18.)
Only 34 pages of actual recipes, but this book not only tell you everything you could ever possibly want to know about baking soda, it also has a recipe for funnel cake that I have rejoiced in since, oh, about 8th grade. It's amazing... although I have to admit I've been so satisfied with it that I've never tried another...
The rest of the book encourages you to use baking soda for all of your cleaning needs. It has recipes for drain cleaners, grease remover, soap scum remover, laundry bluing (is that really what I want? Not sure...), all-purpose cleaners. Many of the cleaners include different recipes for different levels of intensities so you can adjust accordingly. Good to know for Okinawa: baking soda helps with musty smells, including in books!
Also has some use for the stuff "In the Playroom" - play clay, DIY mummies...
Fun book. Makes me want to use the stuff for everything. never could remember it all, but that's why I've got the book! Probably good to remember every time we move and don't have a full set of household chemicals.
This book not only tell you everything you could ever possibly want to know about baking soda, but also gives recipes, and a lot of great cleaning tips, and everyone who knows me knows I love to clean!!! I have been trying to be more environmental friendly and not use as many chemicals while cleaning as well. Plus the joys of baking soda is it is cheap and you can afford it! I really enjoyed this book!
