Beautiful Amanda Traynor was being followed. As she embarked on a mission to unearth the lost civilization of the Kassids, the flame-haired beauty was rescued from an attacker by a seductive stranger with ice-blue eyes. His silver hair was soft as the night air, and his eyes held innumerable secrets. Locked in Daken's arms, Amanda felt the past slip away as a new future unfolded before her, full of innocence and promise. But she sensed that behind Daken's feral gaze lay unfathomable truths, so horrible they jeopardized the only happiness she'd ever known. Hidden deep in the Kassid fortress, shrouded by the mist of the Dark Mountains, ancient legends threatened to quench their flames of passion and destroy the Kassids forever. Together they could save his people, but only if their love was strong enough to survive the mysteries hidden in his piercing blue eyes.

Dnf chapter 8. The beginning was good, but it took way too long for the H and h to be on the same page. Plus this book unfortunately reads "outdated." Not a good start from my library haul, but will still try the ones I bought.
This story started out typical of the “lost tribe in the mountains” vibe. But took a unique turn I didn't see coming. Kudos to the author for being able to spark and then keep my interest from the first page til the last. I had trouble putting this book down and when I did, the story of Amanda and Daken stayed with me. The heat wasn’t really there and the love scenes were a bit lacking, but it was published in 1998, when most romance books left everything to the imagination of the reader. So I didn't expect much. All in all a really good story.
A paranormal (shape-shifter) romance with a few twists. There's a strong Clive Cussler/ripping yarn tone to the alternative history/paranormal aspects, which makes for interesting reading. However, I found the romance weak. This is partly from the strong alpha male character who essentially kidnaps the heroine (more common in 80s and 90s romances), partly from the 'chosen one' aspect, and there's a lot of on again/off again between the couple. The adventure side of the story included a body count that distracted from the romance.
This book did not vibe with me. Now, it was not terrible; it just has not aged well. At times, it was hard to follow, and the romance felt flat. It was also hard for me to get into.
