Chihuahuas of the Zombie Apocalypse

The end of the world looks a whole lot different when you’re eight inches tall. Cheech and Daisy are small, spoiled and cute. Unfortunately, spoiled and cute are overrated when a pack of flesh-eating creepers are closing in fast and chasing you through the streets. Being small? Well, that might help.A pair of seasoned Army Rangers, a teenaged Latina, a deranged serial killer, and two lost Chihuahuas come together to match wits and battle a city full of the undead. Oh, and be This ain’t no cutesy Beverly Hills Chihuahua-type story. It’s a straight forward, blood and guts, in-your-face post-apocalyptic zombie tale." * * * * * * * *Fans of Steven L. Hawk's Peace Warrior Trilogy will recognize the military action and fast-paced style that made those books so well-received. In this book, a pair of highly trained Army Rangers are joined by a new type of four-pound Chihuahuas.

This is a small, suburban zombie novel, which manages to pack a lot of plot into a very small geographic area. It was an interesting idea to do a zombocalypse from the point of view of a chihuahua. For what is essentially a gimmick, this was remarkably well done.

The author is clearly ex-military, because the weaponry was very specific, and lovingly described.

"As Cody knew he would, [Jimbo] went straight for the North Idaho Tech-15, a variant of the Colt AR15. His dad had added a single point sling and a 4x20 scope to the weapon. The quad rail held an aftermarket front grip. . . "

I was disappointed that the appendix with the images of the weapons, body-armor, and transportation would not display images on my Kindle edition:(

I also liked how the violence actually complied with the laws of physics.

"The movement started in the hips and continued forward as he stepped into the swing. The energy generated by the forward motion was transferred to his shoulders, then into his arms, then into the already blood-stained Easton XL1. Finally, it was transferred to the front of his approaching un-mother's head. The resulting explosion of bone, brain and gore propelled the damaged body backward into the hallway, where it collapsed onto the bloodstained tufts that once belonged to Toodles. "

Personally, as an m/m fan, I obviously would have liked the book more if Cody and Jimbo had hot urgent emergency sex with each other, but I do understand that the author gets to pick insistent hetero-ness if he wants to, and I did know this going in. Just sayin'.

Can you really picture him surviving the zombie apocalypse?

Like everyone who has reviewed this book, I went in thinking this was just going to be a cutesy little tale, and probably not written very well. Expectations were low, but we adopted a chiweenie this year and so I now have a new found love of Chihuahuas and Dachshunds. I can confidently attest that my little Snuggle-bug is fiesty and believes that he is the toughest dog in the neighborhood. But enough about my obsession with my dog-child.

This was a very well written book and an engaging story. I like that it was told from the dogs perspective. In fact, I would have been happy with even more from Cheech and Daisy's perspective. But you do not have to be a dog lover to love this book. All you need is to have a love of zombie fiction and the love of a well written book.

Two of my fav things: chihuahuas and zombies. From the title and the cover, I was already a fan! The stress this book caused me, and the worry those 2 little dogs caused me, I feel like I need therapy now. What I didn’t expect, was the multiple plots and the turns this book took. I thought it was going to be cutesy and typical. It was not- but in a fantastic way. Great book. Great plots. Superb writing. Just Great! Great! Great! Loved this. And I absolutely loved Cheech & Daisy. I really would love a series of this. Update: I read this book on my kindle but just bought the paperback. And finally, a picture of Daisy and Cheech! My life is complete! Best book ever!

What a great little zombie novel. The book is an easy quick read that I found really enjoyable. It was also well written. As many have said, you might go into this thinking it’s going to be a cute zombie novel about dogs. It is much more than that.
Cheech and Daisy are two chihuahuas that are left for days to fend for themselves when their pack leader, mom, turns in the apocalypse. Her son Cody has headed home after serving in the service with a friend Jimbo. He hasn’t seen his mom since the death of his father, a year ago, and has not kept in touch. He is anxious to see her and apologize for his absence, when he is sadly disappointed, to find his mom has turned and the dogs have survived her chompers. Cody and Jimbo decide they are going to clear the enclosed neighborhood and go door to door to find neighbors and dispose of dead bodies. While doing this, the dogs escape the house and get lost. Cody is devastated as this was the last thing he could do for his mom in her death.
The story continues with rebuilding, trying to locate the two dogs, finding new friends and of course killing zombies.
The story is told by Cheech much of the time but also a narrator. I really liked this book and was completely worth the read

Who would have thought chihuahuas and a zombie apocalypse would be a winning combination? I really enjoyed following these two loveable cuties and their humans throughout the events of the novel. I listened to the audio version, and it was narrated by AI and while it wasn’t horrible you could def tell it wasn’t a human voice. I think it would have been slightly more enjoyable w a human narrator but otherwise a fun short listen! 🧟‍♀️🐶🐕

🚨Slight spoiler alert - the dogs live! There are a few close calls but they end up just fine so don’t let that put you off reading it. There are a couple other animal deaths though so be warned.

What a ride!

Okay, I've never been much of a zombie apocalypse guy, but the title alone was what made me get this book. I was very pleasantly surprised at how good this book was. From dogs to main characters and even the bad guys, I went through the whole gambit of emotions. Loved the dogs and wanted to be friends with the good guys and hated the bad guys. Fun book, great action and I'd like a book 2 please.

For a book titled Chihuahuas of the Zombie Apocalypse I really thought the dogs’ POVs would be the main, but they really didn’t have a whole lot of chapters. Honestly felt like the Chihuahua POVs could’ve been left out and the story would have remained the same, which for the title, shouldn’t have been possible.

But I still really liked this story! The military guys were not the stereotypical macho men you see in a lot of zombie stories. The women were all great, they had heart and their own stories, not just love interests of the leading men which I always love to see. And overall the plot was fun to follow from both the human and dog perspectives. Literally my only complaint is the dog POVs should’ve had more air time and be more integral to the story but other than that, definitely in my top 6 zombie stories! The dogs do NOT die but they are in danger a lot of the time, so just keep that in mind if you are sensitive to that!

If you’re going to listen to the AI narration on Audible, it’s not too bad as far as AI narration goes. Hope it someday gets a real narrator so I could up the performance review there.

4.5 stars. Don’t let the name or cover fool you - This is not a campy cute cozy zombie story. This is a legit zombie apocalypse thriller. Read it!
Overall, this was a good take on the zombie genre. The chihuahuas added some cuteness/mood lightening (it’s an apocalypse, some levity is a good thing), increased the heartfelt edge of your seat element, and tracking their story added to a more robust plot. The crazy psycho dude… well part of me hated that but I think that’s a good thing overall for the story. Though I’m glad there wasn’t more or any additional detail (such as was suggested in the books ending acknowledgments).

I was getting worried there would be a cliffhanger because there is a lot of action and untied plot strings right up to the near end. Happy to report there is not a cliffhanger. Well paced plot in that regard!

Definitely recommend. Was a quick read and worth it!

A Treat For Fans Of Zombie Stories And Chihuahuas

I was pleasantly surprised by this enjoyable tale of the zombie apocalypse. The zombies and the survivors all followed the correct zombie story rules, and the chihuahuas followed most of the rules of real dogs. Honestly, I only bought this book because I love zombies and I love my chihuahuas. I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. The psychopath, eh, maybe the book didn’t need him. Oh, and I couldn’t get the Kindle version to download on my Paperwhite, so I had to read it on my phone. Otherwise, good show!

I only occasionally read horror novels and wasn’t prepared to like this book. In fact, after reading the first chapter the book was put it aside for months. But I do like me some zombies and I love me some dogs, so I gave the book another go. Hawk is an economical writer. He doesn’t waste time on metaphor or simile. He’s as straightforward as an instruction manual, but when zombies and chihuahuas are involved who needs flowery writing. The book turned out to be a satisfying. The story was fairly solid if not fleshed out as much as it could have been.

Very Good Babies!

I throughly enjoyed the point of view from Cheech and Daisy, their ingenuity and zeal to survive (and to give and receive affection) was a balm to my soul. Cody’s efforts to be reunited with them, along with his reasons made me adore him. Too many characters stepped up and made this novel amazing, I can’t go through them all!

My thanks to the author, this book has become a treasure to me.

Not what I expected

Being a Chihuahua "mom" I thought this was going to be a cute, silly story. Boy was I wrong! The story covered a lot of different characters along with a zombie apocalypse. The author held no punches when it came to the types of people that might be encountered. Think Walking Dead and Nigan! Some of the characters are very disturbing. This is not a PG story.
Very well written.

Awesome read

What a cool story. Cheech and Daisy are great fighters for being so small. The characters and situations are engaging and make most of the story great fun to read. The few sad parts are few and far between. The survivors build a wonderful community and are bringing back a little normal from the crazy of the zombie apocalypse. I would recommend this story to any reader that enjoys apocalyptic fiction.

Really good book

I really liked this book. The pups, which gave the book A different perspective, quit unique, was a bonus. You didn't get the regular zombie gore. There was some but not in detail. The story pulls you in because you really need to know what happens to the pups. All in all the story hits all the things that can go wrong in a zombie apocalypse, but when A community comes together anything can happen.

I couldn't resist the title. I am glad because I was pleasantly surprised. This quick read reminds me bit of Richard Adams, Robert Mccammon and F. Paul Wilson, combined.
Told from the point of view of various characters, my favorite parts were of the dogs.
I truly enjoyed it.🤷‍♂️
(I added a star because I know a couple of chihuahuas 😉)

A GREAT BOOK, LOVE THE DOGS ESPECIALLY

This really was one awesome book. Definitely different from all the other books out there. I'm so happy Cheech and Daisy now have their forever home. With the family all together. I hope Mr. STEVEN L. HAWK has more time for some more great books. I can't wait to see what comes next. SEMPER FI.....

Chihuahuas Rule

This was a delightful break from my regular reading. The title really intrigued me. I'm glad I read it!
It has a quirky quality to the entire book. Two chihuahua pups play a huge part in this apocalyptic zombie story. I really enjoyed it and I think anyone would find it great as well.

Interesting & Well-paced

Overall, it was a good book that kept me entertained and invested in how things ended. It had a good pace, and the action moved along quickly. I wish there was a little more from the dog's perspective. After all, that is probably why most of us read this book.

I want more!
Well, I guess since this has been out for twelve years, there won't be more. It was nicely tied up with a very satisfactory conclusion. I "enjoy" zombie takes, and this includes chihuahuas. Hard to ask for more. It is graphic, but a zombie apocalypse is going to be that way. Humor helps balance out the violence so it is definitely a great read. Highly recommend!

much better than I hoped so glad I read it

What can one hope for in a book with a title such as this? Honestly this went above and beyond. So very glad I gave it a try I was hooked right away and happily traded sleep to see this through.

Enjoyed this book. Got it cause I’ve got two ankle biters and thought it would be interesting. Wish mine were as smart as Little Girl and Little Boy, but they are quite like these two. It was a fun read.

very rewarding

the two tiny stole-the-stage Chihuahuas add humor to what isn’t a run of the mill Z story. Telling part of the story from their points of view keeps the story fast paced and adds insight into how a dog might think of such a world shattering effect. Loved it!

Enjoyed all the characters along with the 2 chi dogs, who truly are warriors. I think this could have been at least a trilogy but definitely worth reading.

If You Love Dogs...

I expected this story to be pretty silly, due to the title, but it's a great book. Well written without too much gore. The characters are fully rounded out. All in all, a great little story.

Chihuahuas and Zombies

I, as a Chihuahua lover, was, of course, drawn to the title and thought it would just be a silly book. To my surprise, it was actually pretty darn good. A quick, easy read with an engaging story, and two scrappy little Chis.

In truth, I don't like zombies. I much prefer vampires in my horror fiction. But chihuahuas? Love them! This book was a fun read, even with zombies. The living characters were well drawn, human and canine, both. Of course, the chihuahuas played significant roles.
