Shifty Magic #2

Undercover Magic

Rate this book
In a dystopian world where paranormal races are out of the closet, FBI partners must stop a dangerous drug cartel leader before more innocent lives are sacrificed.

Abandoned at birth, Addison Kittner's been on her own since she was a kid--ever since the paranormal terrorists attacked cities around the world. Battling creatures that go bump in the night nearly destroyed human society. Good thing not all paranormals were evil and the terrorists were eventually stopped. Bad thing? Nothing would ever be the same again.

For one, highly addictive drugs can be made from vampire venom now that the truth is out. Add in a little magic and the drug becomes irresistible. Addison's partner and on-the-sly boyfriend, werewolf FBI agent Cooper Daine, has been trying to find out who's behind this new threat to humanity. But when he gets too close to the truth, he finds himself falsely accused of taking bribes from the very drug cartel he hunts.

Addison knows he's innocent, but the FBI have other ideas and suddenly she finds herself in their sights. When they come knocking on her door and decide breaking it down is more effective, she does what any smart ex-street kid would, she runs. Next thing she knows, someone's trying to assassinate Cooper, Lord Bellmonte is threatening to hurt her friends if she doesn't find out who's making the drug, and talented kid practitioners are disappearing from their school without a trace.

As the lies pile up, one thing becomes clear--the mastermind behind the drugs is someone more powerful and evil than anything she's ever come up against. Addison doesn't stand a chance of winning. Not without giving up the one thing she treasures most--

Her humanity.

Book 2 of the Shifty Magic series. This review will contain spoilers for book 1.
Addison is sitting in her office when she gets a message from Cooper, her werewolf boyfriend and FBI agent. It just says ‘run’ but she’s too slow on the uptake and within seconds, agents are bashing in her front door. Now she runs.
There is something very wrong. Cooper is implicated in an FBI bribery scandal and she knows he is as straight as a die. But before she can meet him at one of their established safe houses, she is trapped by Danny (Lord Bellmonte’s nephew) and his Were backup. She and Bellmonte made a contract last book, and he wants her to find who is making street drugs from vampire venom.
It is the same case that Cooper was working. Then, Addison is attacked by a vampire assassin with a symbol tattooed on his wrist - a triangle within a circle. He’s not Lord Bellmonte’s assassin. Someone else wants her dead.
Falcon, her tech-talented friend is still running his shop, Magic Bits, and looking after a small girl with an unusual talent of her own; she can bend dimensions and seems to disappear when she does. Addison is the only person who can still see her. It’s another tick in the ‘Addison might be a Were’ box. Last book she could smell demons - they smell like rotting jasmine to her.
The girl, Chiwa asks her to find Falcon’s Uncle Ben. He’s her legal guardian as Falcon is still under eighteen, but she hasn’t even met him and Addison realizes that she hasn’t seen him for a very long time. Falcon wants her to find some kids who have gone missing from a specialized magic school. Chiwa is on the list to attend it.
Ms Fairview, the Lord’s receptionist that Addison helped last book, now works for Cooper and she takes Wizard, Addison’s cat. The third thing she cares about after Cooper and Falcon.
Now, she can find out what’s happening.
***
Addison struggles with letting people into her life. She sees them as liabilities and weaknesses. Targets that she can’t protect.
Cooper still insists that she is at least half Were. He knows this because he can feel his wolf bonding with her and if she rejects him at this late stage of the mating process, he will be in big trouble. Cooper is a prince among wolves. He should be alpha but he abdicated and let his brother do it instead, but he still has rank among the pack.

***
I enjoyed it and I think it is an interesting series… BUT…
There are STILL a lot of editing errors. Things like this:
I backed cautiously toward the elevator. As I went, I engaged the needle discharge chamber and set the green vile, loading it for vamp.(Kindle Locations 377-378).

No, no, no - vial… not vile.
Or, this:
"Will the witnesses will keep their promise of silence?" Holly asked. (Kindle Location 2681).

There are also parts where people leave the room and they were never part of the scene.
Tighter editing is needed before it does get in the way of the story.

Favorite Lines “Only the joy of your smile could incapacitate me again, Miss Kittner.”

“We stay alive and hope Addison's determination leads her to pay dirt.”

“You can't delay your destiny forever. You have to face the truth." He looked at me, his gaze impenetrable and strangely familiar. "Before it destroys you."
What a bunch of cow poop. I'd had enough. "Truth doesn't destroy. It frees.”

“I love you, Addie," he said, his silver-green gaze dancing with happiness. My stomach plummeted with surprise and then a full, sparkling joy burst into my chest. "You better.
You're stuck with me”

“Wherever he and my friends were was where I belonged. I didn't need anything else.”

Oh thank goodness! I was hoping and praying for Addie but I thought her stubbornness would stop her from knowing happiness! Yep not gonna tell you what I'm talking about though sorry.
In this book Connor is accused of taking bribes from drug dealers. So of course the FBI thinks Addie knows something about it and guess who else is in the mix? Lord Bellmonte! He ropes Addie into doing his dirty work again! That vampire is sneaky and always up to something and I fear that before this series is over he's going to cause many more problems. This author is amazing. She sucks you into her world effortlessly and I don't want to go!
I love the Charchters, the story, and the action!!
Can't wait for what comes next!

I got this book from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side.

Firstly I would like to thank the author for giving me this opportunity of reading and reviewing this book.

Well this book has a very unique concept and the mix of Dystopia with Mystery was perfect and the execution was brilliant too.

I liked the characters very much and the concept involving a fact that drugs can be made from Vampire Venom is new in this genre and it really bought a different kind of feel to this whole story. FBI dealing with supernaturals is really a great idea and the smooth flow of the mysterious events just took my breath away.

This book is suitable for both Dystopia and Mystery lovers because the author weaved this two genres so intricately and acutely that it became interesting and chilling as well.

I loved the ending very much and the writing style of the author gave life to the characters, it is rich and descriptive and thus succeeded in forging a bond between the readers and the plot. Over all a great read that will make you go crazy!!!

I received this book for an honest review, and I am SO in LOVE with this little series that I cannot wait till the next one comes out.

We pick up in the second one in this series with Addison being told to "RUN" because the FBI is after her. OMG....it has action from the very beginning, and all the way thru. One thing about this series, is you will never be bored. It's one of those books that you don't dare skip ahead or you will miss something.

Judy Teel has the writing style of Faith Hunter, and Addison reminds me a lot of Jane Yellowrock, except that she is just learning to cope (and she does it kicking and screaming) with the fact that she's not quite human. Like Jane Yellowrock, she is a strong main character that does anything and everything to protect those she cares about.

Not only is there a bad ass head Vamp that she has to deal with, but a corrupt FBI that she constantly has to stay one step ahead of.

And let's not forget about Cooper her hot were boyfriend that she is finally allowing herself to love! Mix that all together, and you are in for one hell of a good time. I recommend this series to all of my friends. You will NOT be disappointed!!!!!

Now we get to see Addie and Cooper finally being happy but there's a wrench threw into the mix. Now they're being framed for involved in making VR a drug made by vampire poison and paranormal blood. Cooper is suspected of taking bribes from a dangerous drug organization. Again Addie is mixed up with Lord Bellmonte and finding out who's responsible for killing paranormals for their blood. Now signs are starting to pop up that Addie isn't human like she's always thought. What comes next is totally unexpected and trust me you really want to read this series as it just keeps getting better and better. I really like the fact that's it's appropriate for 13 plus. Perfect length with enough action to keep you reading late into the night.

The second book of Judy Teel's Magic series starts off jumping right into the action. I strongly recommend you read the first book of the series before you read this one. Not only would you miss a lot of the background necessary to full enjoy this book, it's just a fun book.

Addison is a kick-ass young woman whose tough, take charge exterior hides a very caring heart--especially where her friends are concerned. She's smart, savvy, and knows how to take care of herself. And, Cooper? Well, he's still swoon-worthy!

This book is non-stop action and was hard to put down to get anything else done. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series about this group of people!

I received Undercover Magic as an ARC/Review copy from the author's website. The gifting did not determine the review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion. I enjoy the storyline for this series, and I love the continuing development of the characters-- while some things were predictable, I found I still enjoyed each reveal. I caught more proof errors in this book-- which was disappointing and distracting, preventing this book from getting my highest rating... if you're willing to overlook the grammar/proof mistakes, then you'll probably give this one an easy 4-5 stars.

I was lucky enough to get Undercover Magic as a free download through the author's website. I will buy it for my kindle, since my download was a PDF. Addison's troubles continue with a little more romance added. The story is very good, Addison is 19 years old but usually acts much older. She does have some baggage from being abandoned as an infant and placed in the foster system, which occasionally causes her to make less than smart decisions. The world is intriguing, the story good, and I like the series.

Addison and Cooper are targeted and Cooper is framed when their investigation sparks unexpected retribution. Addison knows Cooper is innocent but when she tries to speak up about the injustice she become the focus of a powerful cabal intent on forcing her compliance. She must disappear in order to escape the clutches of an evil cartel determined to silence her, forever.

Once again fast action, and zippy dialogue along with a riveting story line kept me reading far into the night.

This book was given to me in exchange for my honest review.

Addison finds answers to what she is from an unusual source. Sometimes her character is annoying when it comes to listening other people giving her advice. Otherwise she is a great strong character. Beaumonte is up to no good and the end adds even more questions. Looking forward to the next book.
