The apocalypse is over. But the struggle for survival has only just begun… A hard-won peace has been earned by the McDonald family’s Georgia settlement, Hickory Falls. The rural community offers shelter, food, and safety. At least for now… But in the aftermath of the solar flare, and the fall of the old world, danger takes many forms. It begins with a drought that threatens crops. Then a flood of refugees arrives, driven from their homes by a raging wildfire. They’ve lost everything, and the inferno is spreading. Taking in the dispossessed means more mouths to feed—but it also means willing hands to do vital work. And one refugee in particular has valuable skills. Greyson was a firefighter, and he’s got a plan to make Hickory Falls safe from the encroaching fire. But there’s something a little off about the man. Beth, the McDonald matriarch, doesn’t trust him—though she can’t say why. But, like it or not, he’s part of the community now. Will his preparations save Hickory Falls? Or plunge the community into fiery doom…

Grace Hamilton

Grace Hamilton is the prepper pen-name for a bad-ass, survivalist momma-bear of four kids, and wife to a wonderful husband. After being stuck in a mountain cabin for six days following a flash flood, she decided she never wanted to feel so powerless or have to send her kids to bed hungry again. Now she lives the prepper lifestyle and knows that if SHTF or TEOTWAWKI happens, she’ll be ready to help protect and provide for her family.

Combine this survivalist mentality with a vivid imagination (as well as a slightly unhealthy day dreaming habit) and you get a prepper fiction author. Grace spends her days thinking about the worst possible survival situations that a person could be thrown into, then throwing her characters into these nightmares while trying to figure out "What SHOULD you do in this situation?"

It’s her wish that through her characters, you will get to experience what life will be like and essentially learn from their mistakes and experiences.

This is the fourth book in the Surviving the End series by Grace Hamilton. This is an exciting series that follows the McDonald family's survival after the apocalypse and life in the settlement, Hickory Falls, that they helped to build.

Description:

My Thoughts:
In this book the McDonald family, as well as the entire town of Hickory Falls, is faced with the threat of wildfire. This is another exciting installment to the series with lots of risk, tension, and threats to their survival. The very blunt cliffhanger at the end left me furious though - I really wanted to know more! This entire series is tense with peril at every turn. It will definitely get your heart rate up. Waiting impatiently for the next book....

Burned World is bk4 in the Surviving The End series by Grace Hamilton and has an eye catching cover that fits well with the rest of the series so far and it certainly depicts the dangerous, out of control fire featured in the book plot.

As always when there has been a large gap between books, I worry about remembering all the relevant facts from the previous books and I aren’t one for really re-reading books before reading the new one in the series. It was roughly 3 years since I read New World bk3 in the Surviving The End series, so it was a long time. I did go back and read my reviews for the other books but have to admit that I initially struggled remembering all the nuances of the characters and what had happened previously when I started reading Burned World.

The actual initial apocalypse is over. But the hardships have only just started to really kick in and be really felt. Sheriff James Cooley and the McDonald family are still at the centre of things though everything is still put to a vote and of course the majority rule. With resources including water, becoming even more scarce there are difficult decisions to be made, especially when a newcomer called Greyson arrives warning of a wildfire burning out of control and the possibility of it coming to Hickory Falls. Naturally there’s immediate worrying as with water in short supply already what could they fight a fire with? It just so happens that the newcomer, Greyson has a valuable skill he is eager to share with them, he is/was a fire fighter. He is full of ideas, many controversial and involving a lot of work to pull off on how to protect Hickory Falls from the fire.

I thoroughly enjoyed disliking the rather creepy Greyson from the beginning, I was definitely with both Beth and Violet with their feelings of unease about him. The way he manipulates Sheriff James Cooley, Corbin and the McDonalds is very subtle at first but as the residents of Hickory Falls succumb to his 'spell' the cracks in their community begin to widen. I felt so sorry for Corbin, being used as part of Greyson’s greater plan. Even at the end of this book as a reader we don't know if the information Greyson is providing is the truth or part of some even greater sinister plot he has or is part of.

There’s so much going on in this book that the Hickory Fall residents have to deal with as if they didn’t have enough issues already. Every decision means a meeting, an explanation of options and action and a vote to decide what to do as a community. There are the two huge influxes of newcomers that have fled their own homes due to the fire, that turn up at the gates of Hickory falls offering to work in exchange for food and shelter. Some of the newcomers bring new skills & tools to add to those already at the community. Both times the emergency bell that calls everyone to gather for a meeting is rung and though the vote is very close both times the newcomers are allowed in. However, when a third lot of refugees arrive the vote is for them to be turned away, the strange group do not go without protesting and even trying to climb the tall fence surrounding Hickory Falls. Eventually they shout threats and retreat to the woods, but they are lurking and a constant threat to be dealt with.

I have to admit to chuckling at everyone being sick of the 'only ring in an emergency bell' continuously being used, but it is also a necessity if the community wish to have their opinions heard and to vote on anything and everything such as the fire precautions, as well as the more usual day to day situations that need to be voted on. At one point it seems like the emergency bell to call everyone to the meeting hall is constantly being wrong, dragging people away from work or their rest time. It gets to a point where families only send a couple of people to represent them or just don’t respond to the bell at all. I couldn’t help get the feeling that there would be a huge emergency or danger and the bell would be wrong and lives would be lost due to people ignoring it.

I also felt like reaching into the book and hugging Beth. The stubborn stalwart, the prepper, the one who readily helps anyone & everyone. Beth loses a lot in this book, materialistic, emotionally and physically but she battles on for those around her. I also worry for what's ahead for Jodi, especially when her pain medication totally runs out, how will she cope living in a world where it's literally become an 'every person for themselves' & 'survival of the fittest' scenario.
Sadly, two central, great characters die in this book, one under highly suspicious circumstances and the other who has already been through so much in their life, dies whilst saving the life of another character.
I also felt like reaching into the book and shaking Owen when he was moping about because he was looking after his daughter rather doing hard physical work, whilst his wife worked on certain projects. Having said that I could also kind of see his point of view that he was sort of being “wasted” on babysitting duties when perhaps there were others that could have cared for his daughter. I did love how Jodi handled the situation though as she is right of course that it is important for him to spend time with his child too and realise that caring for a child is also “work” and important.

It's difficult to say much more without giving away major plot lines. I will say that though this started slowly, it’s to set the scene and foundation for what is coming. Once the action begins things happen really quickly.

Summing up, initially I admit to being really irritated at figuring who was who and thinking back to the different family and community dynamics. However, once I got back into the world and society within the book, I slowly began to be pulled back in and the ending of Burned World had me wanting to scream why is there no more!! So yes, I am certainly looking forward to reading more in this series, especially as I had thought that bk3 New World was the last book!! So great surprise that there are actually at least another 2 books to come and they’re being release this year!!

Burned World is the fourth book in the Surviving the End series by Grace Hamilton. Burned World pulled me deep into its world like the three books before it. Burned World kept my attention from the first page until the last. I love the world-building in Burned World.

The descriptions were so vividly written I had no problem following along. I could see everything I was reading in my head like a movie I was watching. I could see the flames of the fire as they did their little dance getting closer and closer to destroying everything Beth had created for her family.

A nearby fire was raging out of control but luckily they had a newcomer who had been a firefighter in his past life before the EMP hit the world. Beth doesn’t trust the newcomer for some reason. She can’t quite put her finger on any one thing specifically for her distrust for Greyson. But something is a little bit off with him.

As the fire is closing in on them the town is preparing to save their little town from the fire. Jodi takes a team for more water in case the fire reaches them. Having more water on hand will help them to be more prepared if the fire reaches them. They don’t want to wait until the last minute.

It doesn’t take them long to realize their water supply is getting very low as it has not rained in quite a while. Watering their crops and supplying water for everyone has caused their water supply to dwindle.

Meanwhile, more and more people are showing up on their doorstep wanting to join their little community. More people to feed would take a toll on their meager supplies but on the other hand, it would mean more people to help out. Should they let the new people join their community or would it be best to let them find their own place to live?

Once I started to read Burned World I couldn’t stop as I was drawn further into its world. I had to know how the story was going to turn out. I had to know what the fire was going to do.

I can’t wait to learn more in the next book Ruined World. My imagination is going wild right about now with that title. I can only guess what Ruined World has waiting for us.

I highly recommend Burned World to all post-apocalyptic fans. Grab a copy of Burned World today!

🔥Surviving the End
Book 4
🔥Post-Apocalyptic
🔥332 pages

🔥Short Synopsis

🔥In post-apocalyptic times, a group of people are functioning well in Hickory Falls with everything they need to survive.

🔥Then Greyson becomes one of them. He is knowledgeable and helps them, including ways to save Hickory Falls if the fire reaches them. He had experience as a firefighter. Who better to listen to?

🔥Little did they know, Greyson started the fire. The fire took out other communities. These people need to find other groups willing to let them in before they starve to death. They are in survival mode, which means trouble.

🔥Will Hickory Falls survive?

🔥My Thoughts

🔥Hickory Falls is such a “normal” community. People did their part to make it thrive, yet there was tension among them and some not-so-pleasant characters.

🔥I was so angry with Greyson. He is the epitome of evil and able to play the game of being just the opposite. I could see the writing on the wall with this one and wanted those around him to see through his facade.

🔥Post-apocalyptic stories are always cringy to me, but I love them! I hate to think that people would act like this is an actual situation, but more than likely, they would.

🔥Grace Hamilton has a way of hitting you in the feels. If you enjoy this genre, check her out.

🔥Thank you to the author for providing this ebook to read and review. 💕

Burned World by Grace Hamilton, wow!
i came into this cold. i hadn't read any of the other books (this was no. 4 in a series) but that was just fine. i dove into the story without a problem. i have to admit post-apocalyptic tales are my jam. i really enjoy them and Burned World was one to savor!!!
we're introduced to the villain of the story right off the bat and what a despicable creature he is. if this had been a movie, i would've been throwing popcorn at the screen!! Greyson is pure evil. I'm sure he kicks kittens and pushes puppies into mud puddles. despicable with a capital D. and he arrives in Hickory Falls with a group of refugees, mixing in unnoticed, but he soon starts sowing discord and mayhem with barely disguised glee.
oh my goodness, the action and excitement were practically non-stop. it was really hard to put this one down and get any work down cause i kept telling myself, "just one more page, just one more page".
my one complaint would be the awful cliffhanger that it ended on. how dare you, Grace Hamilton!!! i have to know the plight of the citizens of Hickory Falls!!! what a cruel woman you are!!! please hurry with the next book!! pretty please!!

I found this installment of the series to have lost it's way. Someone must have told the Author to do more character development or something. Therefore, instead of a fast moving story with a clear goal at the end, the 4th book kind of meandered along.

Somewhere along the story arc Beth (the wife and mother) decides that she needs to put her son in his place so that he (one of the most capable members of the group) sits back at camp and watches his toddler. There was a whole dialogue about it. All I could do was roll my eyes. It wouldn't have worked out like that. And if in real life it would have worked out like that, why in the heck would I want to read about it.

I wanted an adventure book where a group of people overcome and are successful in beating the odds. Not some book of mother-son dialogue about changing diapers.

It is really unfortunate, because the first three books didn't do that. That is how it got a one star rating from me. There are just too many other books out there to be spending time reading something that I am not interested in.

Grayson has moved on from the one place where the people found him out but before he goes he starts a fire and walks away as the fire starts to burn down the hill towards the town that kicked him out. He heads towards Hickory Falls. He's doing pretty good in that town manipulating the people and causing Mayhem. He ends up killing the mayor James. The people at Hickory Falls are working hard to feed everyone and build their community. Survivors are moving from place to place looking for food. Grayson has already started plotting and getting ready for his chance to destroy Hickory Falls. The plot thickens with him burning down that town and taking some survivors to a cult. A very good book that I couldn't put down. A great storyline with fascinating characters. Can't wait to read the next book.

Robin’s Review - Burned World is the fourth book in Grace Hamilton's Surviving the End series. It is a post-apocalyptic CME saga that presents a thrilling and realistic story. In this book, the McDonald family's settlement of Hickory Falls confronts various challenges, including a drought threatening their food supply and a wildfire attracting refugees needing shelter and aid. Greyson, a firefighter with an ambitious plan to save Hickory Falls from fire, faces resistance from matriarch Beth. As chaos ensues and the town is separated by wildfire, readers experience an intriguing storyline with relatable characters. The book is well-written and easy to read, with engrossing page-turning filled with survival tips sprinkled throughout the story.

I am starting to think Ms. Hamilton is actually writing a woke PA series on purpose. Just like every other Democrat ran city today, this is a dysfunctional mess. All they do is whine & bicker while doing everything they can to prevent survival. If my previous ratings were off the mark and she really is trying to demonstrate the difference between her previous series characters and the woke, wishy washy characters in this series, I apologize. If this isn't an attempt to show just how bad Leftist policies are, then she's truly drank the kool-aid.

The McDonald family faces more trouble when the Hickory Falls residents welcome a group of refugees, including an arsonist. This becomes especially problematic because the arsonist is related to Pike, the biker James fed to an alligator. This story is full of action and anger, ending with a cliffhanger. Very highly recommended.

Greyson shows up with a group of refugees and ingratiates himself into Beth’s family. He is taken in and treated well, the family not realizing that he is a sick, psychotic firebug. The wildfire that Greyson started is approaching their town. The town is largely self sufficient and supplies their basic needs, but the wildfire could change that. The fire arrives and all goes to hell, the family is separated. Do they reunite?.

The idea that a medical doctor would say about a man, lying unconscious on the floor for minutes, in a pool of blood from a severe head injury, basically "I'm sure he's fine" stretches incredulity to the absolute extreme. I'm more likely to believe in LITERAL ZOMBIES, which this series has not included. Like if the forest fire (of which we know the cause) turns out to be from dragons, I'd say "sure" before that.

Grace Hamilton has written many series about the aftermath of a life as we know it event. She always has a great story to tell with great characters who must learn to survive the hard way. Every series is different, no story repeats, no recycled events. That alone is an amazing feat, but her stories are engrossing. Your attention is focus'd on how these people will get out of this alive, much less manage to live through the next disaster. I love her books and share with all of my reading friends.
Burned World continues the story of the McDonald family and the trials they will battle to survive. Fires are destroying many settlements as they rage towards Hickory Falls. As new survivors join the community, their skills will help keep the settlement safe and allow them to prosper. It will also add some less than savory characters to the battle all must join.

Whenever I see that Grace Hamilton has a new book out I have to read it immediately. They are well written and perfect escapism but also feel real.

Update review - I am relistening to this as have found the first three books and it makes a lot more sense and even better at the world building and relationships than when I read it as a standalone
