Black Sea: A Hades and Persephone Reimagining

Rate this book
High school is hard enough without getting caught between two Gods.

After her reputation is annihilated, Effie (Persephone) Quinn transfers to Lockwood, an elite boarding school, to finish out her senior year, immediately catching the eye of Hayden (Hades), a misunderstood loner with a dark past, and his charismatic and dangerous brother, Cy (Poseidon).

Cy is determined to win Effie, no matter the cost, and becomes bent on revenge when she rejects him. Meanwhile, Effie finds herself drawn to Hayden, her twisted desire causing an unexplainable sense of security when she’s in his presence.

Effie is torn between two worlds, navigating the treacherous waters of desire, loyalty, and betrayal, until she’s kidnapped from Lockwood… only to discover that her captor is Hayden.

This contemporary, paranormal romance novella is filled with dark secrets, unexpected twists, and some spicy scenes. 18+

✨Arc received for an honest review. ✨

Let me just start off by saying how excited I was when Melissa announced she was doing a prequel novella to her Lockwood Trilogy series. First I was happy about getting more from Lockwood, then homegirl told us this was a Hades X Persephone reimagining and I was swooning. Now lets get to the good stuff.

So for starters, THE NAMES. Effie and Hayden. COME ON. How freaking adorable are these reimagined names for Pers-EFFIE-one and Hades. This is such a fast paced, straight to it novella. There is immediate chemistry and dark pasts that are drawing the MC's together. Where he is darkness, she will follow, but she will rise.

For this being a quick novella and insta love there is still a lot of built up tension and angst where I was just yelling at the characters to just make out because we can all feel it. The way Melissa wrote this just flows so well together that being fast paced just works. I cannot wait to see how this will tie into the present Lockwood Trilogy but I do know there's magic and gods at play and I am ready.

I feel like a door has been opened with this novella because obviously we are left wanting more with that bonus chapter. I have so many questions and want to know more about these characters and to get their stories. Can I just say cliffhanger?

Spice level: 2
TRIGGER WARNINGS: SA/Rape (not on page, not between main characters, just mentioned/alluded to), Death, Violence

I ABSOLUTELY DEVOURED THIS BOOK AND I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS NOW THAT I AM DONE.
I'm a sucker for Hade and Persephone. Lets just get that out there. I always have been, always will be. The moment I heard this book was that along with taking place in the 90s (I was born in the early 90s) and in the same realm as Control, I was sold.

I am so glad that I read this. I was sucked in, immediately needing to know what was going to happen next.

I did kind of worry that it was instalove. I'm still a bit confused and have a lot of questions. However, it looks like there's going to be more books in the series so I have a feeling those will get answered later.

If you liked Control, you'll like this!

Arc Review! | ✰✰✰✰✰

I am so happy to have received this arc, but I would like to make it clear that this is my honest review of Black Sea. I am in no way required to post a 5 star review.

But I’m doing it anyway!

This is a novella, so I knew it would be short. But sweet? Far from it. I will refrain from including spoilers, but I will say - this novella was far from what I expected, and everything at the same time.

In one word, this novella is “unhinged”. In the BEST ways. I was at 30% this morning and finished it before 3pm- and I had an appointment inbetween! In my opinion, there was just enough spice, just enough backstory, just enough tension, just enough of every little nook and cranny this novella could scratch in my head to feed that little beast I carry into every book I read.

I love Effie. Hayden absolutely stole my heart and Cy immediately made me want to kill him (which I know is intentional, but Melissa, you didn’t have to do so well at it!). I will be rereading it for those snarky lines and quotes. There was banter, there were mean girls, there was the dual pov (my favorite thing), there were two hot guys with unclear intentions, this fire of a girl who DEFINITELY bites back, and it all fit into less than two hundred pages and oh my god, I need the rest of this universe in my hands NOW!!

Thank YOU, Melissa Cassera. I enjoyed every single page of this book, and I am so happy to dive in headfirst off of this cliff and into the Lockwood universe. <3

I received an advanced reader copy of this amazing novella, which is a Hades-Persephone-Poseidon reimagining story, not a retelling.

It is set in Lockwood (the boarding school), and it takes place 20 years prior to the story in Control.

I read it all in one sitting. I ate it up in a few hours, it was crazy, but what can I say? I love Hades and Persephone. I liked the 90’s grunge feeling and angst.

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of instalove, but this is a novella so that is expected.

The mystery behind all the characters was amazing, so it is normal to have a lot of questions, and I have this need of wanting to know more and more.

I have a soft spot for the misunderstood character, and Cy is one of them.

The ending was marvelous, and fortunately there will be more books in this series, so I will clarify my doubts about the mystery.

In conclusion, I highly recommend this book and every single book that’s in this series….you will not regret it 😅.

ARC review
Publish date: August 7th 2023

Black Sea is a Hades x Persephone x Poseidon reimagining (not a retelling.) The story is set in Lockwood and takes place 20 years prior to Henry & Natalie’s story in Control.

I really enjoy the Lockwood universe and can’t wait to see how everything plays out. I enjoyed this story. It was fast paced and I much prefer that over a slow burn. Spicy level 1.5/2.

I thought the name play was super genius.
Hades: Hayden
Persephone: Effie
😍

I was a bit confused at first due to how quickly the two MC’s came together but then I chalked it up to the heavily implied destiny/fate that these two have & why such a strong pull towards one another and how they’re (hopefully) meant to be. I hope to see more of these characters very soon, and am looking forward to reading more of Cy’s story and finding out more about Madeline!

I received an ARC copy of Black Sea by Melissa Cassera and it was so good! It has a love triangle, dark romance, self-esteem issues, Greek gods, twists and big revelations. This is a Hades and Persephone story but not like the typical retellings. I think Melissa is entirely correct that this is a reimagination of the story.
It’s a novella that involves the Greek gods as young adults. Hayden (Hades) and his brother Cy (Poseidon) are attending Lockwood. Cy is the popular brother who is the leader of the school and Hayden is the weird brother who every fears due to his past. Hayden has always been the one to protect Cy and it seems like Cy is no longer appreciative of it. Effie (Persephone) is the new girl who also has a dark past. Hayden is instantly entranced, and Cy is also interested in her which causes issues between the two of them. As the story goes on, more darkness seeps into the relationships between Hayden, Cy and Effie. There is a big enlightenment towards the end that makes you so excited to read the next book to see how the brothers will work it out.
I would rate this a 4/5 stars. It kept me interested throughout the whole story. I would have finished it in one day if work wouldn’t have got in the way. It would have been five stars if some of the story happened sooner in the novella. There’s also little bit of spice to this story and that never hurts ;).
I really liked the gothic feel to this story. It’s darkness and edginess All of the characters have their own inner darkness and inner demons and it’s visible in almost every page. Melissa said she was going for 90’s grunge but I think it’s darker. Hayden numerous times speaks to his dark fantasies he has with Effie and it’s shared with her as well. When you first meet Effie, she’s described as a dark-haired beauty with a black flower. Hayden can instantly sense her darkness and that’s why he’s so entranced.
**Spoilers ahead**One thing I disliked about this story is that it took almost to the end of the book before you found out about the brothers’ powers and what they are from. Knowing that this was a Hades/Persephone story, I knew that powers were going to be part of the book but I wish it would have happened earlier.

I thought Cassera knocked it out of the park with Control but woah!! I think Effie and Hayden just became two of my favorite characters!!

Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Before I get into my review I will say that there is a trigger warning for SA and Rape. It is not on page, but is described and it is not between main characters but you should definitely respect your own mental health when making the choice to read this book.

I’ll be totally honest with you guys and say that novellas to a series unless about the main couple of the main series are not my typical read. I get hooked by one couple and I want to focus on them until the HEA so when I saw this wasn’t about Natalie and Henry I was a bit skeptical but was won over by the Hades and Persephone reimagining… I’m a sucker for Hades and Persephone. And boy oh boy was I not disappointed. This book had twists and turns, sibling rivalries, a romance that burned right off the page, and just the right amount of darkness to keep you intrigued. If you read control and wanted something a little faster paced and darker than you absolutely need Black Sea, and if you haven’t picked up control yet but are looking into Black Sea… then what are you waiting for because this book is amazing!!

Typically I would give y’all a much deeper look into the plot and characters, but everything is so fast paced and important in this book that I don’t want to even give a hint of a spoiler. So if you’re looking for a dark, new adult level romance with paranormal aspects and twists that’ll have you turning pages while simultaneously wishing the book was longer than I highly recommend you add this to your TBR immediately!!

HAPPY READING 📖

This is the prequel for Melissa Cassera’s series The Lockwood Trilogy and a reimagined version of Hades and Persephone.

I appreciated the play on the the character names. Effie for Persephone, Hayden for Hades and we even had a Cy for Poseidon.

It was a quick read and a story about two brothers who both take an interest in the new girl at Lockwood. Inevitably Effie is attracted to one brother which leaves the odd brother out feeling some type of way. The book was written well but I felt the characters were lacking and I didn’t feel invested in them. I have also read the first book in the Lockwood trilogy and am having a hard time identifying how this novella ties in with the first and only published book of that series.

I received an advanced reader copy and am leaving this review voluntarily.

Oh my this was a really good book!

Effie switched schools because of bullying, only to fall into that again at Lockwood. She meets Hayden and Cy (the twins) and is trying to stay away from everyone.

Hayden has a bad reputation (due to helping his brother out) and just keeps to himself while everyone spreads rumors about him. When he sees Effie for the first time, he knows that she is meant to be his.

Cy is the playboy at school who has his eye on Effie (who turns him down and he is really not happy about this).

This was a good Novella and I can’t wait until next year for the next book!!!

Cassera has done it again!

This is her second book release and I am a forever fan now. She consistently blows me away with her writing and concepts for her books. Her experience with script writing makes me feel like she is more than qualified to tell the stories her audience wants to read.

I appreciate the perfect amount of spice and her clever word choice. I was in a reading slump for about 2 months now and this made me excited to pick up a book again.

Thank you to booksirens for this arc and to Melissa Cassera for entrusting me to write an honest review for her!

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. I thought this novella was such an interesting reimagining of Hades, Persephone, and Poseidon. I already fell in love with the Lockwood world with Control, so I extra appreciated going back in time to learn more. I still have so many questions and can't wait to see how this all plays out as we get more from Melissa Cassera! I love the darkness that lives within these characters and the moody setting really amplifies the vibe. This novella is out today, 8/7!

Short reimagined Hades and Persephone story

Hayden has is surrounded by dark rumors of his past, they have never bothered him before because he knew the truth. He had no desire to interest with those same people who spoke these rumors about him, but when your brother is the most popular kid in school then you sometimes end up in the same circle. When he spots the new girl Effie alone in the forest, it sparks something to life in him again. His internet is even more piqued when she seems to have heard about the rumors about him and still wants to be near him. So when there is a big blow up with his brother, Cy, Hayden takes Effie to a hidden cabin to protect her. The things they learn about each other and themselves will open their eyes to a whole new world.

Effie is a new transfer to Lockwood school, she had to escape the rumors flying about her at her old school and she only has to worry about a couple more months of senior year before she is free. When she first meets Hayden, she is instantly drawn to a darkness in him that ignited something in her. She is trying to overcome her past, keep her overprotective and clingy mother at ease and also explore those darker sides of herself. When she finally is able to open up to Hayden after a fight between the two brothers, she realizes that her past is not an issue for Hayden and she might just want to help him in this new world they are throw into.

It was a quick read and short story, I do feel like there could have been more details in a few spots to make the story flow a little better and give the reader more insight. But overall it was a good story. I do hope there will be more to their story as I felt there were a few things that were left kind of open ended, but she did present the story for Cy at the end so I am hopeful we will see Hayden and Effie in that as well.

Thank you Melissa for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Black Sea was fun and easy to read but it is dark so I caution trigger warnings now. It has discussion of SA of the FMC, death, violence and bullying.

This is a Hades/Persephone/Poseidon reimagining novella set in the world of her Lockwood Trilogy, 20 years before the start.

This novella is told in a dual POV between Hayden and Effie, with an epilogue from a third characters POV.

Hayden (our Hades) has been locked away at a juvenile detention center, convicted for a crime his brother committed, his attempt to be his twin brother Cy's protector. Now, he has been shipped off to Lockwood by his father to join his twin. Effie is a transfer from Hawaii, where she was being raised by her single mother Demet, after begging her mother to loosen her grip and let her go. Trauma, secrets, bullying, nothing is as it seems and this is only the beginning.

This was a quick instalove style dark romance that I am curious to see how it plays a role in the base series. I am not one for instalove type stories, I know this is a novella so it is short, but I did struggle with believing the connection between Hayden and Effie. It felt more like insta-lust than insta-love and made that pivotal moment feel a bit forced.

However I am a sucker for anything greek mythology, especially Hades and Persephone so I did get through this book quickly! I am left with a lot of questions for the plot and the backstory of the characters. Who the dad is, if this is a reimagining will there be a Zeus? where is he in the brothers story? But I imagine with the cliffhanger on Cy's bonus chapter that this will slowly fall open and this is only the beginning of the tale. I am curious to read more of Melissa's work.

This is a reimagining of Hades & Persephone with the mention of Poseidon.

TW: mention of SA off page, violence, sl*t shaming, bullying..

Blurb:
High school is hard enough without getting caught between two Gods. After her reputation is annihilated, Effie (Persephone) Quinn transfers to Lockwood, an elite boarding school, to finish out her senior year, immediately catching the eye of Hayden (Hades), a misunderstood loner with a dark past, and his charismatic and dangerous brother, Cy (Poseidon). Effie is torn between two worlds, navigating the treacherous waters of desire, loyalty, and betrayal, until she’s kidnapped from Lockwood… only to discover that her captor is Hayden.

Oh my god, this is by far the best reimagining I have read to date. This book is filled with so much angst. First you have the constant banter between bothers, Hayden wants to protect him while Cy wants him to leave him alone and you have the moment where they are both pining after Effie. Then you have the back and forth between Hayden & Effie.. my heart couldn't take anymore. The mouth on Hayden.. 🔥🔥 give me more!

The way Melissa wrote the hot sizzling chemistry between Hayden & Effie is a work of art. They both have a dark and twisted past, and they use each other to help grow from that (don't worry its a good thing). Honestly this book was so wonderfully written, I read this in a matter of a few hours it was so good! Ill recommend this to anyone and everyone that is looking for a Greek reimagining.

📚ARC REVIEW📚

Black Sea by Melissa Cassera
Novella in the Lockwood Trilogy

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Spice level: 🌶️🌶️/3
Genres: YA, Paranormal fiction
Tropes: Hades & Persephone / Greek Mythology reimagining, private/boarding school, 90s, touch her and die, secret powers, secret identities, sibling triangle

Effie becomes a social pariah at her school after a scandal involving a boy. When the teasing evolves to death threats, she gets sent to Lockwood, a private boarding school for the elite to spend their senior year. She quickly catches the eyes of Hayden and Cy, who are brothers.

Cy develops almost an obsession with her, but Effie feels more weirdly drawn to Hayden. The other kids at the school don’t like her (she is “different” than the typical prep school kids), and both Hayden and Cy save her on different occasions from pranks gone wrong.

As Hayden’s and Cy’s rivalry over her affection gets more intense, it becomes clear that they might be hiding some secrets about their pasts and strong they really are.

This book is set in a time before the Lockwood Trilogy takes place and can be read as a standalone; however, the last few chapters of this book are a tie-in to the main series and reveal some previously unknown information.

This book is a dual POV between Cy and Effie.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick, fast-paced novella that was a fun addition to the main series. I enjoyed that although the setting was the same (Lockwood), the characters were all different.
For some reason I didn’t make the connection about the names until the very end… 👀👀 if you are familiar with Greek mythology, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Although, Bryce’s name should have been Breus (pronounced Bruce), to fit the mythology better.
I’m looking forward to the next book in the series! There are still questions left unanswered, but the ending leads me to believe they will be revealed soon. If you enjoy paranormal fantasy, or mythology reimagining, definitely give this series a read!
Thank you to the author for a copy of this to read ✨
This was a super fast, fun read and it makes me want to read the next book in the Control series so bad! That ending! How is it connected?! My mind is spinning a little.
Black Sea is a reimagining of Hades and Persephone set twenty years before Control takes place. Hayden (Hades) has just been released from a juvenile detention center after taking the fall for a crime that his twin brother (Cy / Poseidon) committed. Effie (Persephone) has transferred to Lockwood to escape the abuse of her previous school. She hopes to start over, but is quickly pulled into more drama when she denies the advances of Cy and starts to fall for bad boy Hayden.
Anything that has to do with Hades and Persephone I will automatically read, and I loved this reimagining. Effie craves the darkness and it was absolutely sizzling when she went head to head with Hayden. Their relationship was an insta type connection, but there was a little bit of a slow burn to the crescendo at the end. Their darkness is a perfect match for each other and I'm so curious to see if they reappear in future Control books (pretty please!)
I really enjoyed getting into Cy's head at the end in the bonus chapter. I hated him throughout this novella so it was nice to get some more background on why he acted the way he did. I can have sympathy for him, I'm just still withholding liking him to see if he continues down the @$$h*le path.
My Review!!!
~This is a quick read novella; very interesting that will keep you wanting to read till you are finished with it!!! Warning it will make you want more after you’re done. 😉 Looking forward to how this ties in with the Lockwood Series!!!! The main characters are Hayden & Effie and of course Cy. Now Hayden & Effie do have some past trauma history that kinda helps them understand each other. 🥰 When they first meet each other they notice there was a pull desire for each other, but hayden was scared that he will hurt her. There is some bullying and jealousy shown in some of the chapters, so please friendly reminder to read the TW. Throughout the chapters you also find out little secrets that were being kept from Hayden when he was younger since he was locked up and that is what his father preferred that it be like that. But some truth was revealed and yet does Hayden believe what was said by Cy? But, let’s be honest, finding out these things sure left me with more questions than ever.! I hope I get answers soon!!!! LOL!!! Now let’s talk about that ending like OMG! Can we say what type of tease that was!!! CLIFFHANGER more like it!! 😅 Can’t wait to see what happens next!!! Need to know more about Cy, Hayden & Effie.
One thing that I consistently enjoy is a good reimagining and/or retelling of a classic tale or myth. This Hades and Persephone reimagining was very enjoyable. I’ve read others on this topic, but they had adults as main characters. Using high schoolers as the central players gave this a nice, unique tone.
Hayden and Cy are fraternal twin brothers, with Cy as the alleged good boy, and Hayden as the juvenile delinquent hellraiser. I liked seeing parts of the story through Hayden’s eyes; reading about his inner turmoil surrounding his protective instincts toward his brother and his anger and hurt when Cy repeatedly mocks, rejects, or ignores him was a bit heartbreaking. When new student Effie is thrown into the mix, emotions run even higher. Clara and Amelia are the perfect mean girls, Cy is believable (at least initially) as the “ good guy,” and Effie’s internal hurt and despair over the events that brought her to school on the mainland pull at the strings of the reader’s sympathy. Eventually ( and rather quickly) Cy shows his ugly heart and Hayden and Effie, once isolated together, are explosive.
I know this is a novella but I really wish it had been longer so that the reimagined history of Hayden, Cy, and their parents could be fleshed out a little more (ie: how did their parents meet?, how did Hayden have no idea about his powers?). Overall, an enjoyable reimagining worth reading.
I have recently become somewhat obsessed with the re-tellings and re-imaginings of the myths and so when given the chance to read this exciting novella, I grabbed with both hands!
This super quick read tells the story of two brothers, Hayden and Cy, and their feisty and fraught relationship.
When Effie joins the school, tensions rise even higher with both brothers vying for her attention.
Which brother will make his mark and what secrets will be revealed along the way?....
This absolutely hooked me in from the very first page. The writing style instantly engaging and immersing you into the Lockwood world with promises of darkness and secrets.
The characters were intriguing and although flawed, I couldn't help rooting for Hayden and Effie to escape their struggles.
This was a spicy read and the sexual tension built up throughout. These sections were really well written and the amount of darkness just enough to suit the theme and content of the storyline as a whole.
I absolutely loved this book and think that Hades and Persephone will always be my favourite myth to read about.
A brilliant read and perfectly written - I can't wait to dive into Melissa's other novels in the Lockwood series.
Hades/Persephone reimagining🔥. What a fun and quick read! I loved it and already need the second book the way that cliffhanger left me.
“Because when I'm in the light, I dim, like a bulb about to burn out. But when I’m in the darkness, I rise. And it turns out, the devil and I get along just fine.”
⚠️CW: Please check the warnings as the book may not be suitable for all readers. As always, protect your mental health.💛
This novella takes place 20 years before the Lockwood Trilogy and I can’t wait to see how it continues to tie into that series.
After being locked away at a juvenile detention center for a few years. Hayden, also known as Hades, is shipped off the Lockwood by his father to join his twin brother, Cy.
Effie is from Hawaii where she was raised by her mom but gets transferred to Lockwood after begging her mom to go.
From past trauma, a school of secrets, and family secrets. This book will have you locked down waiting to see what happens next. I enjoyed it so much!
Thank you, Melissa Cassera for the free EARC! As always, my review is my opinion and thoughts. This review will be shared on my Instagram (@Alexandriavwilliams_) shortly.
Enjoyed this novella no end, I’m a sucker for Greek mythology reimagining and having this one provided in the form of Hades, Persephone and Poseidon reimagining was excellent twisting this into an entirely new experience.
The high school angst vibes are really spot on, and this blended in with the darker aspects of the story incredibly well.
For me this story felt like that of two broken souls surviving in the darkness finding acceptance in each other and a hunger than only the other can sate. This also allowed for a a great level of spice to show through, not overpowering the story but instead embellishing it.
The nods to the other aspects of Hades and Poseidon’s powers were excellent, the truth telling power from Hades especially. This is included with such casual grace but at the same time has a powerful impact on the dialogue.
Thoroughly enjoyed the ending, can’t wait to see Melissa takes future books and the tie-ins with the Lockwood trilogy. There are so many avenues where this could go next, and I’m excited to be along for the ride.
I received an ARC copy of this book and can confirm that this is my honest review.
I recieved an ARC and this is my honest review.
This is a reimagined Hades and Persephone story and I would like to state that I have never read any stories about them before.
"Black Sea" is a prequel novel from the Lockwood series but it can stand alone as of right now in my opinion. Effie (Persephone) transfered to Lockwood high school to get away from her past. There she meets two brothers, Hayden (Hades) and Cy (Poseidon). Both have had a messed up life and both are trying to win over Effie.
This book is very fast pace, instant attraction, spice, jealousy, and lot of questions. Personally I liked it, but not as much as the "Control" or "Unravel." To me, it seemed more like a fan fiction. I feel like the characters needed to be fleshed out more. The names seemed almost cheesy to me? I don’t know. I also had a lot of questions throughout the book so hopefully those will be answered later. The romance seemed really random and almost forced at times. I have no clue how this story relates to the Trilogy, so I'm curious to see where that connection will be. I don't think I would re-read this book but I really enjoy the Lockwood series overall so far.
I've come to realize I'm a sucker for a Hades and Persephone reimagining, that alone sold me on Black Sea. Add to it that it's set in the 90s and the Lockwood universe and I knew as soon as I had it in my grubby little paws I'd be curled up with my kindle, a drink, and a "do not disturb" attitude!
Black Sea did not disappoint 🙌 We have twins Hayden and Cy who have been reunited at Lockwood, and although Hayden took actions that he felt were to protect Cy, he returns to so much animosity! Hayden is a textbook social pariah, and Cy is the BMOC.
When new girl Effie comes to Lockwood to escape her troubled past, both brothers are drawn to her. The attraction between Effie and Hayden is off the charts! I'm not usually a fan of instalove, but it fits with the Hades/Persephone vibe. And of course, it wouldn't be a Melissa Cassera book without an epic cliffhanger! Can't wait to see what's next!
I received an advanced copy of Black Sea from Melissa Cassera in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
"Because when I'm in the light, I dim, like a bulb about to burn out. But when I'm in the darkness, I rise. And it turns out, the devil and I get along just fine." 🖤
Super angsty and a dark reimagining of Hades, Persephone, and Poseidon...and I enjoyed it!
Everyone has secrets, and everyone is either trying to figure them out or use the rumors against each other. And that is what makes such perfect tension between Hayden and Effie.
They have such a pull towards each other and play games to get information and reveal their true selves to one another.
Hayden was definitely my favorite. He is this "bad boy" who has done unexplainable things, but no one truly knows him, and although he has a darkness inside him, he is kind and caring to those he loves. He's also quite protective, and who doesn't love that?
I'm definitely curious about what's next for Hayden and Effie, but also Hayden's twin brother, Cy. He was supposed to be the bad guy, but...maybe he really isn't.
I did receive this as an arc and I'm voluntarily giving my honest review.
"I want more than one night. If we do this, you're not leaving. Ever." Ughhhh to die for. I have so many highlights in this novella. I completely loved it. It was pretty short(which I know it was supposed to be), the only issue I really had was that it wasn’t long enough. This is the second book that I have read from this author and let me just say, I completely love her and her stories! This story was super easy to get into and I can’t wait for more! This story pulled me in and had me reading so quickly just having to know what happens next. I like that we as readers had the Dual POV so we could understand everything from both of the main characters. We even got a bonus chapter at the end from Cy’s POV which alluded to what’s next to come in this series. I love the characters and the relationships between them. This novella had me like…..??! What!! many times throughout it. I feel like this was a short intro to a series hopefully. Gave us just enough to be dying to know what’s next in Hayden, Effie, & Cy’s story.
I did receive this ARC in an exchange for an HONEST review.
“It’s not hell if you love how it burns.”
I am a sucker for Greek mythology retelling and Hades and Persephone is one of my favorite. To set it in high school in the 90’s allowed for more angst, while giving off the grunge vibes, and made for a more interesting twist by adding in a tryst between Poseidon and Persephone.
This story is set at Lockwood, an elite private boarding school, where we meet Hayden, Effie, and Cy. Hayden sees Effie first, but Cy speaks to her first and he makes it his mission to win her over. However, her rejection causes him to be hateful and put her at risk. Effie decided then that she wants to go back home, but something else happens, causing her to be kidnapped. When she realizes she’s been kidnapped, and by no other than Hayden, she can’t figure out why. While she thinks she should be worried with him, she can’t help but find herself falling for him.
There are twists and turns and some spice tossed in, but such a good read I kinda wish I could read it for the first time again.
This was a super fast read, and very enjoyable! This book had me on my toes almost the entire way through! “Black Sea” comes 20 years prior to “Control,” the first book in this series. To be honest, I hated Cy the entire way through the book. That man is something else. Heyden on the other hand, yes please! I was mad when Cy just didn’t give a crap what Heyden has done for him, and “set him free from.” Like how ungrateful can you be?! My heart felt a bit shattered about Effie, due to her past and what people are still putting her through. (Probably because it’s some of what I went through with bullying 🙄 some people just suck). Between the banter, the instalove, and the dark pasts, this one you just can’t put down! (I feel I say that a lot, but seriously, a lot of books I’ve read, I just can not for the life of me put it down!). I’m excited to see how this plays more into the series!
