A tragic car accident had robbed Royce Williams of his vision -- and stolen his spirit. Disabled hero! Who doesn't deal well with it! Heroine who was a teenage hooker! But who sucked at that and was rescued by hero! And now wants to return the favor!
Great backstory, with a lot of emotional promise. And for the most part it delivered. Royce wasn't an ace at being blind, Julie wasn't an all-knowing saint. I really liked it, but then I found that Julia should've come clean earlier. And the happy ending was just a bit too happy you know.
This was good. Well-written, unusual plot and characters, backstory. Six years before h was runaway preyed on by pimp who was beating her to death when H intervened, saved her. She got fostered by wonderful people, went to college and now is a therapist working with blind people.
H lost his sight in accident and bitterly resents it, doesn't want to learn to cope because he's sure he'll regain his vision. (Which he does.) He's gone through a few therapists already when h learns of his injury and contacts his lawyer to ask that he hire her without telling H she's the girl he saved. H was emotionally distant, refused to have anything to do with other people outside of a friend or two, like the lawyer and his butler who essentially raised him, and handled his business without connecting to others.
He tries to put the h off with bad attitude but she gets through to him, helps him learn to navigate through his world of dark, how to handle strange situations and locales. They start to fall in love, which h was already primed to do. Then she tells him that he's well enough now that she should leave. And she does.
He regains his sight and realizes he misses h and loves her. His butler figured out the h is the lady H saved 6 years before and tells H. H doesn't care that she was a prostitute for a few months, he wants to marry her. The lawyer helps him track her down, he visits her foster family's home, finds her. ILY and HEA.
I thoroughly enjoyed Dark Intentions. The weakest part of the whole book was the title, honestly. Makes it sound like a thriller. What it is ended up being an enjoyable love story between two people moving through their troubled backgrounds, and their current struggles, to fall in love. Sweet, simple and a little soapy in the best way. A bit of lag in the middle keeps it from 5 stars, but still one I really enjoyed.
I kinda liked this one but it had a slow start. After some pushing I finally got the flow. I liked that this book was not about the passionate lovemaking but more about the love from within.
It's a guilty pleasure of mine, I must admit. The whole "wounded hero/male love interest" really makes me squee. Even when the writing (or translation) is bad - which I really can't say it is here - and/or the story is clichéd - which I can definitely say here - there is something that draws me to reading these stories, even to writing my own. In part it's because of my own disabilities, in part it's seeing the cis normative macho man as a vulnerable, flawed person.
The drawback to many of these stories is the standard ending. Not only do the heroine get the guy - she also helps him accept himself and start living again. And in most of these stories, I find my pet peeve. This is where the spoiler is, by the way. The guy is _healed_. *hurls*
When I finally get a disabled male character, he doesn't stay disabled. I feel cheated! This is where I'm glad I bought it second hand for less than a buck. And where I go back to writing my ow stories. And here's a spoiler for those: the disabled guy stays disabled. Just the way I want it.
If you have any suggestions for those kind of stories - they can be het, m/m or poly; even fanfic, I'm not picky - feel free to share in comments or pm.
