Growing up in poverty, Sunny never expected anything good from life. It's not my favorite volume but it still has its own strengths apart from the other volumes. Here we get to explore the Dystopian world that Sunny lives in albeit he's in much better state now compared to being the literal rats of society before the Nightmare. I wish we have seen the difference of his life before the Spell to his life now after awakening. But, instead we got to have a mini tournament arc where he don a new persona. There so many things that happened, some seems like unnecessary and irrelevant. but I'm pretty sure it will all pay off in the future volumes.

tl:dr, i think Volume 3: Prince of Nothing is a good set up volume for the upcoming volumes.

This volume was a tough one to get through, the first few mini arcs were long and drawn out feeling like he wanted to me hid quota of 2 chapters a day but the final arc made up for a lot of it with its horror element and the build up until that point.

It does lacks the aesthetics and brutality of the Forgotten Shore Arc. But it had a couple of scenes that we brutal too:

1. Sunny's trip to the Rift. Weeks without external stimuli must have been hell.
2. Sunny and Cassie imprinsonment brutal as well.

The rest? ok.

What a grueling journey this was. Don't get me wrong, the story is going in the right direction. However some of the executions were not as nearly as flawless compared to the previous book. The book still managed to land it's ending, I'm pretty excited to see the second nightmare in action.

Sunny had to contend with the ramifications of being bound to a master. There's plenty of character development for Sunny. Sadly, we don't see the same amount of it for others, as Sunny is our only POV and he is almost always lonely in this book. He spent an entire month falling into the sky below. Those twenty chapters were grueling with no descriptions of the wonderful vista of Chained Isles. It was a sensory deprivation for both Sunny and the reader.

Chained Isles is another mesmerizing setting which was fascinating to travel through. The Reckoning island, Twisted Rock, Shipwreck island, Night Temple, Ebony and Ivory Temples, were all satisfying to read. Add on to the places we visit in the waking world with the grand tournament at the seat of Fortress Valor. This book was an info drop but not in the bad way. The transitions between the dream and the waking world are a bit jarring. Still is jarring with almost nothing interesting that takes place in waking world except the opening of gate and the dreamscape tournament.

We get a bunch of info about the sovereigns, Mordred being Valor Morgan's son. Much more exciting are places Sunny stumbles into. Especially Ebony Temple right after making me almost go insane in the void just before, The lore found in Ebony Temple almost redeems itself. We find Weaver had been to the Ebony Tower when he was wounded. The only mark remaining is the giant phalanx of the seven fingered hand. The needle used by the weaver is so ominous and we are yet to see what Sunny will do with it. After Sunny enters the time which had been stopped begins with renewed speed, bringing with it thousands of years for corruption in severed hand to finally die out of hunger. There are mentions of Goddess of night and sea and goddess of desire and hope here. It's brimming explanations with how Chained Isles came to be.

Apart from the excellent action sequence, we start to see many more new story threads. I cannot get into all. It's quite interesting to see where things with Rain, Dreamscape, The ties between Asterion and Mordred and Nephis journey through the desert would go. I was a bit disappointed that this was the vision Cassie saw and I'm thinking she maybe had the timing wrong. There was blizzard and birds fighting in her vision, we only got a little snow and i didn't even see any birds fighting. A little bit disappointed in the time spent in prison cell in belfry. Although realistic i like how they don't escape the very next moment, regardless we do lose precious time with Sunny and Cassie just suffering silently. The pacing really slows but at least the author makes it a worthwhile in coming chapters. Now let's see if the next book holds a candle to forgotten shore.

Back to the real world, so this book mostly deals with the aftermath of the event of previous books and their current goals.

With 3 books and 600 chapters read, although each chapter is somewhat short, I finally feel confident to comment on the writing.

It’s by no means shallow, and there are evidences of planning. However, too many pointless and boring padding in the narrative. Many of the small details are inconsistent. The characters themselves lack depth except the MC himself, if barely. Not much focus on side characters at all, not even main members like Kai or Cassie. It’s also such a missed opportunity to not build out the other awakened from the Shore.

The power system itself has many inconsistencies and lack logical connections. For example, why would saturation of the soul for Sunny raised his class while the same process raised Saint’s rank instead? There is no clear known cause and effect. Why complete the nightmare raise human rank? What exactly happened? Did something change internally or Spell granted the change? Why waking up from the first dream awaken the sleeper as opposed to the rest of progression?

All in all, it’s rough around the edges. However, I find the world building and Nephis interesting, if a bit shallow, so I’ll stick around. Here hoping the author improves as the book progresses.

Score: 3.6/5

I’m bingeing this series currently so I’m going to give a major review at the end. But yeah, this is literally my favourite series of the year so far. Very gritty and the magic system is pretty cool. The MC is very rational and the side characters’ decisions all make sense. 4.7/5 for the first 3 books

The beginning was interesting, the middle of the book was engaging, and the ending was interesting too. However, from after the start until the middle of the book, the characters other than Sunny seemed two-dimensional. Later in the book, when the secrets were revealed, I understood why they were the way they were.

i really liked the whole mongrel stuff and the tournament, the shadow dance and weavers abilities eating the drop of ichor were also amazing, i was saddened tho that sunny isnt truthfull enough with his sister rainny, and the whole ending arc with mirror guy felt very rushed...

3.5!!
liked the slice of life parts, everyone glazed the last 50 chapters and perhaps, because of that, i got my expectations too high and was left kinda disappointed.

Fight scenes were exhilarating in this, and the new biome was fun since it worked in its own mysterious ways. The book still has my interest.

I am utterly shocked. How can a series continue to stay this good?? We’re 600 chapters in and I’m still craving more.

Abandoned at ch-600, I feel that much like many series, after the main arc, ShadowSlave had a downward turn. It isn't noticed almost immediately, as you're still experiencing the hype after the big arc has concluded but it slowly, very slowly creeps in.
It could be because the 'light and dark' dynamic which was present in the previous volumes isn't present, or that everything seems 'pointless' because all of Sunny's 'big dreams' like becoming a citizen, becoming respected, etc are achieved and now he's climbing the Maslow's hierarchy towards something else, something more profound. Yet it feels empty.
It's much akin to what people felt with Naruto- we 'were him' and we saw him grow, almost lived through him, could see ourselves in him. Yet, when he climbed- grew to an almost obscene level in power (and character)- we couldn't relate to him anymore. Sunny was- is that kind of 'shonen' character.
I do not want to be left behind. That means I must continue climbing. To do that, I must focus on my own story. Thank you for that realization.
