Growing up in poverty, Sunny never expected anything good from life. However, even he did not anticipate being chosen by the Nightmare Spell and becoming one of the Awakened - an elite group of people gifted with supernatural powers. Transported into a ruined magical world, he found himself facing against terrible monsters - and other Awakened - in a deadly battle of survival. What's worse, the shadow powers he received happened to possess a small, but potentially fatal side effect...
Incroyable, tous les chapitres s'enchaînent avec des révélations en continu. Un oeu inquiet de la capacité de l'auteur à maintenir ce poulet pour les 7 livres suivants
It's not my favorite volume but it still has its own strengths apart from the other volumes. Here we get to explore the Dystopian world that Sunny lives in albeit he's in much better state now compared to being the literal rats of society before the Nightmare. I wish we have seen the difference of his life before the Spell to his life now after awakening. But, instead we got to have a mini tournament arc where he don a new persona. There so many things that happened, some seems like unnecessary and irrelevant. but I'm pretty sure it will all pay off in the future volumes.
tl:dr, i think Volume 3: Prince of Nothing is a good set up volume for the upcoming volumes.
This volume was a tough one to get through, the first few mini arcs were long and drawn out feeling like he wanted to me hid quota of 2 chapters a day but the final arc made up for a lot of it with its horror element and the build up until that point.
Hot take this is Lowley ahhh you learn some good lore and it sets up well but the chained isles is mid tbh and it’s mid I felt like he was Lowley just writing filler while coming up with better stuff
Back to the real world, so this book mostly deals with the aftermath of the event of previous books and their current goals.
With 3 books and 600 chapters read, although each chapter is somewhat short, I finally feel confident to comment on the writing.
It’s by no means shallow, and there are evidences of planning. However, too many pointless and boring padding in the narrative. Many of the small details are inconsistent. The characters themselves lack depth except the MC himself, if barely. Not much focus on side characters at all, not even main members like Kai or Cassie. It’s also such a missed opportunity to not build out the other awakened from the Shore.
The power system itself has many inconsistencies and lack logical connections. For example, why would saturation of the soul for Sunny raised his class while the same process raised Saint’s rank instead? There is no clear known cause and effect. Why complete the nightmare raise human rank? What exactly happened? Did something change internally or Spell granted the change? Why waking up from the first dream awaken the sleeper as opposed to the rest of progression?
All in all, it’s rough around the edges. However, I find the world building and Nephis interesting, if a bit shallow, so I’ll stick around. Here hoping the author improves as the book progresses.
I’m bingeing this series currently so I’m going to give a major review at the end. But yeah, this is literally my favourite series of the year so far. Very gritty and the magic system is pretty cool. The MC is very rational and the side characters’ decisions all make sense. 4.7/5 for the first 3 books
Volviendo al contenido, que obra de arteee. Lo del Mongrel dios mio me encantó JAJAJAJAJAJAJA y me encantó más lo de Rain, temo por la niña pero hay que tener fe que no le va a pasar nada malo.
i really liked the whole mongrel stuff and the tournament, the shadow dance and weavers abilities eating the drop of ichor were also amazing, i was saddened tho that sunny isnt truthfull enough with his sister rainny, and the whole ending arc with mirror guy felt very rushed...

Abandoned at ch-600, I feel that much like many series, after the main arc, ShadowSlave had a downward turn. It isn't noticed almost immediately, as you're still experiencing the hype after the big arc has concluded but it slowly, very slowly creeps in. It could be because the 'light and dark' dynamic which was present in the previous volumes isn't present, or that everything seems 'pointless' because all of Sunny's 'big dreams' like becoming a citizen, becoming respected, etc are achieved and now he's climbing the Maslow's hierarchy towards something else, something more profound. Yet it feels empty. It's much akin to what people felt with Naruto- we 'were him' and we saw him grow, almost lived through him, could see ourselves in him. Yet, when he climbed- grew to an almost obscene level in power (and character)- we couldn't relate to him anymore. Sunny was- is that kind of 'shonen' character. I do not want to be left behind. That means I must continue climbing. To do that, I must focus on my own story. Thank you for that realization.
