Another of the many books reviewing the documentation of quilts in the various states, this is an information packed volume about quilts either made in CA or brought to CA before 1945. But it's so much more. It's also a history book. A most impressive four page Time Line starting at 1500 with early Spanish colonies, through the Gold Rush, arrival of the railroad and it's effect on the agricultural economy, the'health seekers'movement, the increasing public roles of women, the Depression, statehood and most importantly, for this book,a map along with symbols along the time line of how the quilts in the book got to California (transportation method if from out of state) as well as dates the quilts in the book were made, and the dates they were brought to CA with special notation of quilts made IN California.
The selection of quilts was varied from fine to utilitarian and the stories connected to the makers and circumstances of the quilts were very interesting.
I didn't count photos but they are found on almost every page; some with close ups of the details and include not only quilts but people!
I recommend to anyone with an interest in textiles, women's history and quilts.

I've read many state quilt history books. This is one of the best!

The quilts were amazing and beautiful. Another reason to admire those pioneer women who quilted as they traveled to their new homes.
