OUR STORY
A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.

Amazing! It is a trip around the world in food and not to be missed! If you like to travel or simply enjoy traveling in books, this is the one for you! I especially loved the little into to each country, which tells you what the country is known for, imports, what to devour and what to avoid! I'm pretty sure the "what to avoid" would go without question, but then again, I have a very adventurous daughter who would go to China and say "Hey, let's try the Camel Hump Soup!", so this section is quite helpful in that regard.
I enjoyed the paragraphs about the traditions, etiquette and holidays also. There is not much to dislike about this wonderful book!
Cannot recommend highly enough!

This "Food Book", as the sub-title suggests, takes us on an extraordinary culinary journey to 47 countries around the world.
Some European countries begin the book, discussing each region along with its culture, traditions and dining etiquette. Of course, the book also discusses the different types of food that each country specializes in. In addition, the types of stores that sell the country's specialty food and beverage products are also described, along with each country's unique cooking techniques.
From the Europe continent, the reader is taken to the Middle East and North Africa, then on to Asia, the Pacific, and circling back to the America, and ending on the African continent.

Indonesia is covered from page 632 to page 655. Since the team of authors are not from Indonesia, and I don't know the process of compiling it, and how much research they did, the food culture influences discussed are only from the Chinese side, although there are many other cultural influences in Indonesian food culture, at least from the Dutch and Arab influences. Sambal is also still paired with "chilli sauce", even though there are many different forms of sambal. Perhaps this is also because the book was published in 2013. By this time, the term "sambal" had already been included in the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

Overall, this book is very interesting especially for foodies like me. Getting this book as a gift was very touching and I will cherish this book close to my heart.

The book is pretty big and bulky with the dimension of approx. 7 x 7 x 2 inches. It features most, but not all topics related to food like culture, regions, feasts, etiquette, the menu, daily meals, essential produce, shopping, preparation, defining dishes, and drinks as well as some of the recipes from 47 famous cuisines of the world. I like this book very much but i had a hard time read names of dishes, especially French ones. Recommended to those who love food and travel!
