Morgan must risk her own life to save her family, but will she ultimately be betrayed?
From ancient Christian sites in Spain, Italy and Israel to the far reaches of Iran and Tunisia, Morgan and Jake must track down the stones through the myths of the early church in a race against time before a new Pentecost is summoned, this time powered by the fires of evil.

Action packed series , Raiders of the lost Ark meets Da'Vinci Code springs to mind with these books . Well written with lots of historical and geographical detail plus the religious aspects make these books page turners . The violence is graphic though so may be not for the very squeamish . All in all an excellent trilogy .
This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:
It's the second bundle of books by Ms Penn that I listened to; the first was intriguing, with a twist on the paranormal, this one focuses on the iconic mysteries of Christianity and is as engaging and thrilling...
Morgan Sierra is an intriguing character; a very intelligent scholar with wide knowledge of religious cults, a psychologist but also a soldier, trained in weapon use and good at it... She partners with men as intelligent and as capable as she is and together they solve three cases connected with three great artefacts of Christianity: the Pentecost Stones, the Devil's Bible and the Ark of the Covenant...
I like the way Ms Penn mixes myths and legends surrounding those artefacts with historical facts, creating fast-paced, thrilling stories which take us all around the world. The idea is not new, but Ms Penn makes it her own, adds her own flare to it. I like the fact that she does show violence in the stories, though I generally don't like gore just for the sake of gore in my books; but the scenes of violence in these stories make sense, are plausible and logically suit the situations...
The only thing I didn't like much in this set is the narration. It's really difficult for me to rate Ms Giguere's interpretation... On the one hand I generally liked the voices she gave individual characters, though I thought Morgan sounded too delicate, as if she apologized she's alive all the time. The male voices, however, were very well done indeed. On the other hand, the way she read narrative parts started to irritate me after the first two hours of listenig - every sentence, even those that just give you historical facts/information, were read so emotionally that I had an impression she'd burt into tears at any moment (like a teenager seeing her idol and not being able to hold the emotions inside... you know what I mean, right?). It definitely got better in the third book, but it still kind of bothered me... So I'd say it's somewhere between just OK and good - 2.5 stars for the narration.
But otherwise it's a greatly engaging set of thrillers so just get it and definitely give it a chance :)

Stone of Fire (ARKANE #1). Captivating, well-developed characters coupled with an intriguing storyline make for a page-turning read! I'm a character reader, I get into what makes characters tick, who and what they are. Penn does a good job with her character development, you can like and/or hate these characters. I like the storyline although it seemed stretched in places. She lays the groundwork for an ongoing series. Crypt of Bone by author J.F. 1st in series, this is an excellent start. The story is crisp, concise and travels far, which the author has researched to give authenticity. It is an excellent book, thoroughly recommended.
Second volume in Arcane series and another bone cracking great story.
Crypt of Bone (ARKANE Book 2) by JF Penn 10/10
In the second episode, a quarter of the world's population will die. Only chosen people can survive the purge.
Arkane members Morgan and Jake must stop the carnage, when suicides occur in Jerusalem at the behest of God. So starts a rapid search around the world for an alternative Bible.
Only its destruction can avert the apocalypse.
With breakneck speed, our two Arkane operatives save the world again.
Ark of Blood (ARKANE Book 3) by J.F. Penn
10/10
Jerusalem in turmoil with sectarian rivalries creating violence in the streets, spurred on by those who wish to gain.
In a typical gory scene, they murder a guardian which leads to a search for the Ark of the Covenant by those who wish to use its enormous power to fulfill their political dreams.
Arkane teams Morgan with other members as her usual partner is still recovering from wounds.
In the usual fast-paced action throughout, this very well-written book proceeds to the climax where everything resolves, saving the Middle East from a private Armageddon
Another in the Arkane series I can thoroughly recommend
All three books were pretty good. The first and third books kind of ended in a whimper, but all books had great movement throughout the beginning and middle. Crypt of Bone, I felt, had the strongest narrative, but I was still left unfulfilled as to the fate of Thanatos. Maybe they come back in future books, I don’t know. The first was just action from one chapter to the next with a couple of short moments for fun character stuff. It was solid and focused and drove on at a great pace. The third was kinda all over the place, still entertaining but was a bit of a mess.
I'm not even a thriller reader! But I love J.F. Penn's blog, podcast, and support of writers. I got this free at some point in the past few years and just finally listened to all three books. What fun! Great to listen to as I drove or worked out. And I liked learning about different places and religious icons, spots, people, etc.
If you're a reader of thrillers (with a hint of the supernatural), give the ARKANE books a try!
I really enjoyed the first three books in the ARKANE series. They had tons of action, a very strong, educated female protagonist, and historically influenced plots that were very believable. Think Dan Brown with more action and sidekicks. :-)
They’re real page turners and I had a hard time putting them down. Recommend!!!!!
Each book in the ARKANE series improves on the one before. Already a JF Penn fan with her generous support of writers, I didn't think these books (out of my genre's) would appeal. But I'm hooked and am looking forward to delving into the rest of the series.
I really enjoyed all 3 of these books. The main characters, Morgan in particular, are well thought out and have good solid back stories that lend credence to the stories. The dialogue is great and the settings, which move around the world, are fantastically described in a way that allows you to fully submerge yourself into the books. Overall, really quite great!
They are a travel tour, a fantastic research treasure AND a page-turning thriller! Her main character is one I will continue to follow in the next box set.
This is an excellent series. I enjoy the blend of a thriller mixed in with history. I have some strong beliefs and values and I believe there are things that happen in this world that can’t be explained by science. Sometimes you just need some faith.
J.F. Penn has created a wonderful world with the ARKANE novels. These books encompass everything you could wish for in a suspenseful action thriller. ARKANE is the shadowy organization that winds its threads around the world. With rare antiquities, high-speed chases, shadowy alleyways, exotic locales, mysterious journals and amazingly researched detail, these are books you will not want to miss. Each of these alone are well worth the price of admission, but to get the first three entries in the series in one beautiful boxed set is a rare treat indeed.
Comparisons will be made to Indiana Jones, Sydney Bristow and Alex Archer’s “Rogue Angel” series; however, nothing can really prepare you for the exquisite experience these novels will bring to you. The amount of research is staggering, but it is interwoven with the fast-paced plot in a way that it never becomes overwhelming or burdensome. The characterizations are a bit deeper than you might expect from these types of stories since the author gives a bit of background history to each of the main players and this helps bring them into focus much more clearly and clarifies their motivations.
This boxed set contains “Stone of Fire” (Pentecost), “Crypt of Bone” (Prophecy) and “Ark of Blood” (Exodus). As each novel unfolds, you’re drawn further and further into this mysterious labyrinth of mazes, puzzles and truly arcane treasures. Blame it on Nancy Drew as my first foray into the pleasures of reading, but my stories must have mystery, adventure, hidden doorways and secret clues. This series of books by J.F. Penn has all this and more. I couldn’t have conjured up a more satisfying or perfect series of books if I had custom-ordered them myself.
**I was given a free copy of this set by the author in exchange for an honest review**
Having only read the first of the ARKANE series, Stone of Fire, This review is on that book alone.
I have read many books in this genre (action thriller with historical/archaeological elements as foundation of basic premise), as it is by far my favorite genre. Therefore, I can't help but do some comparisons to other works in the same vein. Readers who will enjoy this book will invariably enjoy exotic location settings, obscure historical and archaeological details and exciting action involving those. Penn's writing adds an interesting emphasis on religious aspects as well. What I feel the book lacked was more narrative between the action sequences that would have fleshed out the characters a bit more. By the end of the book, I felt I sort of had an idea who Morgan, the main character was, and an even less idea who Jake was. There were moments in the story, I wanted more and was disappointed. For example, the climactic sequence would have benefited from a more thorough examination of the thought processes and emotional chaos that the writing only hinted at: you knew it was there but you didn't feel a part of it. Also, it would have been fun to have these characters get caught up in the tremendous emotional onslaught that was going on between them while in the middle of the climactic action. What ironic tension it would have added! Having them both be able to shove emotions aside with only a nod, left me feeling cool towards them and wasted a prime moment to reveal their humanity and move the reader. Having said that, I did enjoy the book. I am not sure I enjoyed it enough to pick up the next one in the series though.
Great series! I'm not always into thrillers but the religious aspect of these intrigued me. Joanne does a great job in researching her subject matter and thoughtfully includes links so readers can do their own extended reading of the facts behind the fiction. Please see my individual reviews for books 1 through 3 as I did not realize the box set was on the list. I received a copy of the set in exchange for an honest opinion.
I enjoy reading books that have lots of action as well as story lines that take me to places that that have a lot of history that relates to the plot. Each of the three books contained lots of thrilling action in various historic areas of the world. The stories also flowed from one to the next in a contentious flow. I look forward to reading the remaining books in the series.
Absolutely thrilling mystery...Suspense, Intrigue ..Penn is a master in the art of writing! Once I started I couldn't stop reading! She has the ability to make you feel you are standing along side the primary character! Fantastic book!!
Thrilling ride into a new series. If you like James Rollins, Dan Brown, and Ernest Dempsey, you will love this series. Suspenseful, exciting, scary, thrilling, and a roller-coaster of a trip. Love them!
I absolutely loved the arkane books I have read them all. the characters are brilliant and I felt an emotional connection to them all especially Morgan. The conspiracy elements of Christianity are brilliant thanks Joanna keep them coming please
I absolutely loved this series - in particular, I found the MC (Dr. Morgan Sierra) complex and engaging, and I hope that Penn will write a slew of other stories focused on her.
Extremely fun, and a great read if you need something to keep you on the edge of your seat. While I was reading it I never wanted to put it down, and now I can't wait to read the next set!
Love, love, love these books! Normally, if I'm reading an omnibus, I take a break and read something else between each book. Not with this one though. Couldn't put it down, and will be treating myself to every other book by this author. This kind of story is right up my street, and the characters are people I like and want to see triumph. The bad guys are really bad, and every aspect of these stories work for me completely. Well done JF Penn for thoroughly entertaining me.
