Coming out as a continuation of the first adventure in 5th edition D&D, the one that came with the starter set, The Lost Mine of Phandelver, back in 2023, this volume kind of celebrates that starter adventure, which has with time been replaced by Dragons of Stormwreck Isle in the new Set, and takes it further.
This is a good idea, which gives this adventure a nostalgic feel, and reprints the original adventure with some mostly cosmetic changes and then we get a substantial expansion to the story into the level of a complete campaign. In fact the story takes a huge turn after the first few levels and that makes this something really new as well. Smartly enough, it kind of dovetails with the extremely popular Baldur's Gate 3 game in terms of the evil to be fought.
What we have here is probably the best pre-made adventure of the last few years and one of the best of the fifth edition in general. It is weird, wide-ranging, satisfying and goes from traditional fantasy fare into a Lovecraftian slick and slimy place. Can't wait to play or DM this.
