For fans of Halloween and Scream , Bleed is the first gripping novel in The Skull Serial Killer Thriller Series. If you enjoy the slasher genre and psychological thrillers, you’ll love this chilling and unpredictable story from bestselling author Emerald O’Brien.
A Halloween to remember… if she makes it out alive.
In the quiet town of Auburn Hills, a man in a skull mask forces a father to watch as his daughter is murdered, only to be granted the twisted reprieve of his own death when a witness calls for help. The sadistic killer escapes, and the grief-stricken father gives his statement before admitting himself to a mental health hospital.
One month later, Fox Dallener is eager to celebrate her Halloween traditions with her cousin. But after a disturbing experience at work, she can’t shake the eerie feeling of being watched.
On edge, she hopes for safety in numbers as she and her cousin attend a Halloween party with their group of misfit friends. However, all bets are off when the inconsolable father is spotted leaving the hospital and the witness is reported missing.
As the night progresses, unsettling events push Fox’s paranoia to the limits. Though her panic could be the result of simple, harmless pranks, she can’t help but feel like a target.
Desperate for answers and safety, Fox fears the worst. Has her past finally caught up to her?
The killer isn’t the only one with a mask. Fox wears one of her own.

Bleed is Emerald O'Brien at her best. An eerily suspenseful, heart-pounding thriller with characters you'll love and love to hate and a twist you'll never see coming. This novel is a masterclass in crafting characters, building tension, and twisting the traditional serial killer thriller story we all know on its head. Fans of all things horror and psychological thrillers won't want to miss this one. I was riveted to the page from the chilling opening scene until the final heartstopping moment. And that twist! I never in a million years saw it coming and the more I think about it, the more brilliant it gets. No one does psychological thrillers and blends the horror elements in so seamlessly as O'Brien does. It's a true work of art. Bleed is a sinister, completely cinematic story brought to life by a powerhouse author who is at the top of her game. Add this to your list and be prepared to devour it! This has been my favorite book by O'Brien and my favorite read of 2023!
Emerald O’Brien is one of my favorite thriller writers so I was beyond excited to get an early copy of this book (and have you seen the cover??). I’ll admit that the book started a little slowly for me (I was hoping for a little more punch in a slasher), but once the story got going it was like I had been transported into a teen slasher and carnage was everywhere I turned. I liked the main character, but I felt like she could have been developed a bit more and I’m kind of hoping that happens in the next book. I liked that Fox didn’t strike me as the final girl, This is a perfect Halloween story and one that will make you nostalgic for all your favorite slasher movies (if you’re like me and a huge fan of them I guess!). Summarizing a slasher is hard so I will just say pick this one up, you won’t regret it.
WTH! This blew me away, it was so friggen intense. I was getting insane anxiety reading this slasher- mental health breaks were mandatory!!!
I’m so bummed that my library or even our provincial interlibrary loan program doesn’t carry this series!! Especially since Emerald is a Canadian author (I live in Alberta) and her Bleed series takes place in Ontario! I’ll have to keep bugging them to order the “Bleed” books so I can dive into the next one!!!
This is story is not to be missed- it is perfect for reading during or outside of spooky season- at any time of the year really. The twists, turns, surprises, and reveals will have your jaw hitting the floor (mine did a few times). A good mix of characters, a well thought out plot, and enough closure that you’re left feeling satisfied, but still craving Book #2.
So, grab your copy, join Fox and her friends as a masked killer stalks their town, circling ever closer.
Emerald O'Brien's book, Bleed, had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. As a reader who doesn't typically gravitate towards the horror genre, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this story.
Right from the beginning, O'Brien sets the tone with a spine-chilling scene that immediately grabs your attention. The storyline is eerie and captivating, keeping you guessing and filled with tension throughout. The pacing is spot-on, allowing the suspense to build and keeping you hooked until the very end.
What impressed me the most were the characters that O'Brien created. Each one felt well-developed and realistic, adding depth to the story and making it even more engaging. I found myself genuinely invested in Fox Dalleners fate and rooting for her to survive the horrors she faced.
Unlike many horror novels that rely solely on excessive gore, Bleed strikes the perfect balance. O'Brien knows how to create a sense of fear and unease without relying on gratuitous violence. It's a testament to her skill as a writer that she can evoke such strong emotions without resorting to shock value.
Several times throughout the book, I found myself genuinely frightened. Reading alone in the dark on my Kindle, O'Brien's vivid descriptions and masterful storytelling had me creeped out and on edge. It's the kind of book that stays with you, lingering in your thoughts long after you've finished reading.
I can easily envision Bleed being adapted into a horror film that would gain a cult following. The twist in the story is brilliant and unexpected, adding an extra layer of intrigue and making it stand out from other horror novels.
Overall, Bleed is a gripping and chilling read that I highly recommend. Whether you're a fan of the horror genre or not, O'Brien's skillful storytelling and ability to create an atmosphere of fear and suspense will leave you wanting more. Brace yourself for a thrilling and unforgettable experience.
I want to give a big shoutout to Emerald O'Brien for kindly providing me with an Arc to read. In return, I gave her a an honest blog review. Much thanks to you, Emerald!
This was a fun romp with a serial killer that kept me guessing. it was very formulaic in its execution but it was still an enjoyable ride, and I loved the ambience and the scream vibes that I was getting throughout. I'm looking forward to continuing the series as soon as I can as I'm keen to see where it goes from here.
The characters were enjoyable, and I was rooting for them with all my heart, just try not to get attached, as who knows who will make it out alive. This really brought the isolated and trapped atmosphere, and I was here for it.
Bleed is the first book in The Skull Serial Killer Thriller Series.
In Auburn Hills, a man wearing a skull mask murders a young woman and forces her father to watch. There is a witness but the killer escapes. Who is this madman and why did he kill this young woman? Who will be his next victim?
Fox Dallener is eager to celebrate Halloween with her cousin and friends but some unsettling events have left her very frightened. She is positive that someone is following her. Who is this person and what could he possibly want with her? Could something from her past have prompted this? She must not let her past be revealed.
This is a truly gripping novel of suspense and horror. If you are a fan of Halloween and Scream, you absolutely must read this book. Be prepared for an edge of your seat book that you will not be able to put down. This is Emerald O’Brien at her absolute best.
Many thanks to Emerald O’Brien for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book.
This was an okay story but I feel disappointed as I expected a bit more action and suspense!
Most of the plot focused on Fox (the main character) complaining about things changing, and having to find a new house, and reminiscing of the past, and feeling sad because things are different from when she was a kid. Admittedly, things changed after her father died prematurely, but I think there was too much emphasis on this (probably as it defines Fox's character so much). In addition, a lot of the story also focused on her cousin Jack and their friends, without much happening until 70% of the book.
Although I did think the story was ok, I felt the serial killer's motives a bit forced and overall I didn't feel any attachment to the characters.
I am grateful to the author for a copy and this is my honest opinion.
*MILD SPOILERS* . .. … .. . The writing was fine but not great — a little bare bones — but the story felt like a knock-off version of Scream in book form. 80% of the book is a lot of paranoia and whodunnit (possible alternate title: Red Herrings: The Novel) but there actually isn’t a confirmed threat until the end. I mean we know there’s a threat, but Fox is basically just so freaked out that there was someone following her (it’s the “taking out the trash at the diner” scene from Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon) despite nothing really happening and there being plenty of logical explanations (I.e. Ryan is known to be a prankster and a jerk and he even has the mask) as to what she thinks she saw, so the fact that Fox is so certain there was a threat feels unearned. Maybe if it was written a little better it would have sold me on it, but as I was reading I just kept thinking “the way this was written, it comes across that she just got spooked in the dark” and then proceeded to spend the next 150 pages focusing on that one event where nothing really happened. And that’s sort of par for the course: there’s a lot of chapter-ending misdirects that basically end up being the literary equivalent of a jump scare by a cat (e.g. it’s not actually a threat, it’s just a prank, etc.). In the end there are some gnarly kill sequences, but the explanation felt unbelievable (sure, the killer’s psychotic so it doesn’t have to make logical sense, but that doesn’t mean it’s satisfying. I didn’t hate it, it just feels like with a little more polish it could have been really solid instead of just…¯\_(ツ)_/¯ My gut reaction is that it reads like a YA novel with a sprinkling of full-on MATURE levels of brutality right before the finish line.
Also, in this day and age when OnlyFans is so ubiquitous on the Internet, anonymous bikini photos that were purchased by clients for their own private use feels little too tame for how scandalous they make it out to be (at least in Fox’s mind).
I had very high expectations for this one, almost to a point of being scared to read it just in case I was disappointed. Did it meet my expectations? Yes!!! Everything and more! I really enjoyed this book.
Fox feels someone is after her and she's about to learn her thoughts are true. Secrets of the past are going to be unleashed and blood is going to be spilled. Who will bleed this Halloween?!
This book is a proper slow burn but it's so good. It's eerie and unsettling. While some characters are a bit annoying, the development is so good that you learn to love them as your own friends. Giggling at their silly ways or rolling your eyes at their behaviour. This made the idea of them being slaughtered all the more terrifying as they seemed so real! When things do get going - it's pretty horrific, and very emotional! The book does such a fantastic job of building up the picture, letting you know the characters, but still being on edge throughout. You don't really trust anyone because they all seem like they could be in on something.
The chapters of what seemed to be the killer were such a good add. I had my suspicions on who it could be and what their motive could be over and over again. Did I get it right? Nope. The author played this one incredibly well.
An excellent book in the slasher genre. You must read it if you enjoy this type of thing! It's probably the closest to those Halloween / Scream movie vibes I've ever felt while reading a book!
This is the first book in the Skull Serial Killer Thriller Series called Bleed. I received it from the author Emerald O'Brien herself in exchange for an honest review. It will be released on the 31st of August.
We follow main character Fox who, together with her friends, are planning to celebrate Halloween like they have always done. There is one difference, there is a killer on the loose. This killer has a mask, a skull mask with which he frightens his victims. And, of course, the climax takes place during the Halloween party, culminating in a Scream-like cat and mouse game.
I absolutely loved the vibe and the overall storyline of this book. I like the movies Scream and this book reminded me of the films a lot. The differences are that the book has way more depth and the main characters are well worked out because you really get to know them quite well.
The story itself is just brilliant in its simplicity, being a slasher story, but coated in an interesting layer of depth that makes the reader guess about the perpetrator and the motive for the killings.
The author is very gifted in making the written word come to life from the pages. It's like reading a movie. I absolutely loved it and I can't wait for the second part in this series!
This book is the perfect Halloween thriller! Packed with edge of your seat suspense, and lots of nail biting moments, this fast paced thriller will keep you up all night. Bleed is the first instalment of the Skull Serial Killer Thriller series and it is a page turner from start to finish. There were some red herrings thrown in and I took a few guesses as to who the killer was but not only did I not guess correctly, I did not see that ending coming at all!! I can't wait for the next instalment!
A big thank you to Emerald O'Brien for an eARC of this book to read and review.
Published: August 31, 2023 Emerald O’Brien Genre: Psychological Thriller Pages: 246 KKECReads Rating: 5/5 I received a copy of this book for free, and I leave my review voluntarily.
Emerald O'Brien is a Canadian author, born and raised just east of Toronto, Ontario. She graduated from her Television Broadcasting and Communications Media program at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. In 2014, Emerald decided to pursue her life-long passion for writing unpredictable stories packed with suspense. When she is not reading or writing, Emerald can be found with family and friends. Watching movies with her two beagles is one of her favourite ways to spend an evening at home.
“We can have tonight.”
Fox is used to people leaving; it doesn’t make her sad. She accepts it as normal. When she loses a lucrative job, she moves into her aunt and uncle's house, which is available as they are divorcing. With the house sale looming, Fox has to start making decisions. Thankfully, her best friend and cousin, Jack, comes home to spend Halloween with her. Nothing can go wrong when she has her best friend by her side.
DO YOU LIKE SCARY MOVIES?! Holy cannoli, Batman. I enjoyed this novel immensely. The build-up was so brilliantly done. I loved every horror movie reference, and I appreciate Emerald even more for using lesser-known titles (Ginger Snaps?!). I loved how that played so perfectly into this storyline.
I loved Fox. She was not someone who saw herself as a victim of anything. She embraced life, even if it scared her or left her feeling helpless, and she clung to the people who made her feel alive.
I loved the dynamic Jack and Fox had. I think most of us have someone in our life that is the Ethel to our Lucy (another fantastic reference). The soul sisterhood between these two was beautiful.
The way this story is told is chaotic and scary, but when the twist happens- it slaps you in the face and holds you hostage. I devoured this book. The last half was so intense!
My favorite horror films are those that could happen, so I loved this story. This could happen. It’s terrifying to think about; it’s a gruesome thing to say, but it could happen. The fear kept me glued to the pages, and the anxiety had me speed-reading.
I love the complex emotions Emerald writes within her characters and situations. You feel the tension, fear, anger- and it moves you. Emerald writes her characters with so much heart, and it is apparent that she has done the work in bringing them to life in her mind, which allows her to weave them into terrifying novels.
How someone who is so genuinely kind can create worlds filled with the stuff of absolute nightmares baffles me. Yet Emerald has done it again. I don’t even try to guess the twists anymore- I sit back and hold on.
This read like a horror film. I enjoyed that aspect. I am excited this is a series, and I look forward to seeing what kind of nightmares await!
4.5 stars rounded to 5 for GR. Bleed is the 1st book in The Skull Serial Killer book series and is told in 3rd person from Fox’s POV mixed in with the killer’s POV. First of all, Emerald absolutely killed it with this book. I read a lot of thriller and horror books but parts of this one had me seriously scared to read it after dark 😅. I also mainly read at night so it took me a little longer to get through due to being a scaredy cat however I absolutely loved it! I really loved Fox’s character and her relationship with Jack. I also loved the twists and turns and how it scared it made me. The epilogue ended on a damn cliff hanger so I’ll be anxiously awaiting book 2 that comes out 11/30!!! 😍 Highly recommend this for spooky season!
Sometimes you pick up a book and as you start to read your pulse races, you just know that something epic is beginning and ‘Bleed’ does not disappoint. From the first chapter you pick up on the unease which threads itself skilfully through this book. You don’t want to keep reading, because now you’re really disconcerted but you have to; delicious mystery and painful memories keep you going as you weave you’re own consciousness into the intrigue. When the ‘mask’ made its first entrance I was almost thrown it seemed so naive but once more the tension ramps up, the heart beating even faster and sweating. Who are they and why are they doing this? Fox seems to be the key to it all but she has already lost so much. This is an intricate tale, so well written, and agitating beyond reason . I couldn’t leave it alone. A disturbingly brilliant read with a back story so good it aches.
I would like to thank the author for allowing me to read the ARC.
As a Scream/Halloween fan? Yeah, definitely ATE THIS UP. Emerald is a new author to me and I am so grateful that I found her on Tiktok (and she’s Canadian, that’s a bonus!!) This was such a quick read and had me on my toes from beggining to end. The author spent just the right amount of time on introducing us to the characters to make us care about them and I think that’s what makes it so good because you just can’t handle losing ANY of them later on when the horror really picks up. Can’t wait to read the next one!
This was a 2 star read up until the 75% mark where it finally got to the good stuff. Good stuff, as in the actual slashing and killing and tense suspense of the horror movies it was compared with. For a 240-page book that should have been a quick "chilling" and "unpredictable" read, I thought it moved far too slowly, and the build-up was boring.
This is book 1 in the Skull Serial Killer Thriller Series.
This book was riveting from the start!!Emerald did an incredible job of building up the suspense and having you engrossed in the lives of the characters before all hell broke loose. I enjoyed each character, even the annoying ones, lol. I found myself wrapped up in the lives of Fox & Jack and their individual stories. In this book, there were some eery, intense scenes, and some gore but not too much. The perfect balance.
Emerald is a talented writer who knows how to captivate her readers with her words.
I want to say I'm not one to normally read horror but I absolutely love Emerald's writing so of course I had to give it a try! I can't wait for her next one!
I read this as an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
WOW WOW WOW This was the scariest book I have ever read and that is just because I don't read them. This was just like watching a scary movie and it definitely has ALL THE SCARES!!!!! If scary books are your thing then YOU NEED TO READ this one!!!!! Oh Emerald, you have out done yourself with this one for sure and I still have chills!!!!
Fox is feeling alone. Her father has passed away, her mother is always away travelling, and her best friend and cousin Jack has long since moved away. With Halloween right around the corner and Jack visiting, Fox is hoping they can enjoy their annual tradition and distract herself from impending homelessness and money issues. However, after seeing a strange figure hanging around outside her work during closing, and with ominous news reports starting to pop up, she begins to wonder if someone is watching her—and if so, why?
Although I'm a big horror reader generally, I always feel drawn towards slashers during October. I grew up in the 90s, and my heart rests with the likes of Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Urban Legend. Compelling young adult protagonists, a central mystery, twists and turns, and some surprisingly brutal murders—perhaps formulaic but always a winning one for me, and Bleed is steeped in that tradition.
This was my first time reading one of O'Brien's novels, and I was not disappointed. A combination of an easy reading style of prose, relatively short chapters, frequent reveals, and creepy set pieces, I found myself flying through the chapters. I loved seeing the motives and killings unravel before my eyes and enjoyed seeing the nods to horror movies of decades past.
Bleed doesn't reinvent the wheel, and even those with a passing interest in the sub-genre will likely feel a comforting familiarity in this book. The important thing here is the execution, and if you have the same love for the slasher that I do, I expect you'll have as much wince-inducing fun as I did with this story. I look forward to returning to this world with the sequel soon.
Bleed by Emerald O’Brien is by her terms a Slasher novel. I am going to tell you right now that I have never read a Slasher novel in my entire life. This one was out of the world fun to read. I will probably never read another Slasher book by anyone except Emerald. I trust her with my life.
First of all, you could almost hear the sinister music in the background while reading this book. My heart was pounding out of my chest at times. Lord have Mercy, this book will scare the daylights out of you! I wanted to use another word besides daylights but, I am afraid my review would get blocked and I really needed y'all read this review and to read the latest new book from Emerald O’Brien!
This book comes out August 31st just in time for gearing up for Halloween. In fact, this book takes place leading up to, during and just after Halloween. By the way, I am not handing out candy this year nor am I going to any parties. I’m going to be home reading a ROMANCE book with my doors locked! Thank you very much, Emerald!
Emerald does a great job developing her characters. I had to pay attention to character names and who they were. Part of that was my age and the other part was the two main female characters had male names. I got used to those quite quickly but, there were quite a few characters in this book to keep track of. We can probably stack that up to my age. Should a 68 year old woman read a Slasher book? Yes, she should. Just don’t trust everyone who writes in the genre. Our hearts can and should only beat so fast!
If you love the Slasher books, I assume this is right in your wheelhouse. If you’ve never read one like me, I say go for it! You might find something you love besides mystery and thriller books. This is just another step into the deep. Until next time…Happy Reading!
Don’t forget to support the authors you read by leaving a review!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Halloween at my house was always full of costumes, candy and festive decorations. We never had a scary movie night but I can definitely see how that would enhance the already fun and special holiday. In Ms.O'Brien's new book “Bleed,” which is part one of her Skull Serial Killer Thriller Series, we meet Fox and her cousin, Jack, who are as close as sisters and lovers of everything Halloween. This year, though, a young girl had been murdered by a masked killer and the whole town was on edge as to who might be next. Fox kept looking over her shoulder wherever she went and it didn’t help her nerves when one of her friends snuck up on her wearing the same type of mask. As the story progressed, I tried to imagine which character could possibly be the serial killer but I came up empty handed. Instead, I decided to delve into the mind of a serial killer and what could have possibly happened in someone’s life to cause them to stab a perfect stranger, a young girl, who was an innocent pawn in a diabolical game.
What could this poor girl have done to deserve such a violent death? Why does Fox sense that she was somehow connected to the actions of the serial killer? She became obsessed with the case and was afraid that everyone around her could be in danger. As I finished reading, I was shocked when the identity of the serial killer was revealed because it was someone I never expected it to be. Once the pieces of the puzzle were all in place it was a relief to some, but others weren't convinced that danger wasn’t still lurking in the dark of night.
Scream, Halloween, Friday the 13th vibes, sign me the hell up ! I was deeply invested in this slasher type thriller, it's honestly the perfect read for this Halloween.
The story does start off a little slower then I usually like, but it has it's purpose to set the scene and to get you on the edge of your seat wondering when the carnage will happen. Once the serial killer came into play, it was carnage everywhere ! I was here for it ! Stick through the slower part you will not be disappointed.
I really enjoyed the characters I thought they all brought something to the story. I do hope to dig deeper into Fox and Jack in the next installment. They felt realistic which made me more engaged in the story and the hopes of survival. I loved how tight their group of friends are and how they're always there for one another.
O'Brien set up a truly eerie, chilling setting through the whole book. I always had the feeling something bad would happen. The suspense is real from beginning to end you will not want to put it down. The writing was great, the author was able to evoke such strong emotions without the overuse of gory details, just the perfect amount to make you imagine the scene.
You will not see that twist coming and the ending even less, I was left on a cliffhanger BUT the prior questions I had were all resolved so I can deal with it!
If you're looking for a slasher type horror/thriller that will overwhelm you in suspense with the perfect Halloween vibes, don't miss out !!!
✨️Thank you to a @emeraldobrien for my free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
BLEED is the first installment in Emerald's new Skull Serial Killer series, and it's off to a strong start! Inspired by the slasher films of the 80s, a chilling scene unfolds in the prologue. A man whose features are hidden behind a skull mask forces a father to watch as his daughter is murdered. Before the father can meet an equally grisly end, the killer escapes, and the stunned father, dazed by grief, admits himself to a mental hospital.
The story then turns its attention to Fox, who is planning a traditional Halloween celebration with friends. But something is different this year...Fox is positive she's being followed and watched. The tension builds slowly, and much like when you're watching a horror movie, your breathing becomes more and more shallow as you're anticipating the jump scares.
I found the last 30% of the book to be the most intense, and the action played out like one of my beloved slasher films. As a lifelong reader and viewer of horror, I so enjoyed the author's homage to the slasher genre and can't wait to see what happens in the next installment. Thank you so much to the author for my place on her ARC team and for an early copy of BLEED that will publish August 31, 2023.
Growing up in the 80s, I was a huge fan of slasher movies like Nightmare on Elm Street, Sleepaway Camp, Prom Night, Friday the 13th...etc...etc! More often than not, it seemed like these movie plots involved a group of young people gathering together for some sort of fun and always ended in blood, death and more often than not, created movie squeals.
Bleed emulated all of the pre-requisites of an epic 80s thriller brought into modern day setting. Protagonist Fox Dallener is getting ready to spend Halloween with her friends. It's a tradition and despite a killer on the loose in the area, the tradition must go on.
Right before Halloween night, Fox gets locked out of work taking out the garbage and sees a figure in the shadows. She believes she is being watched and begins to get paranoid. I mean, who wouldn't? This is just the beginning of events to happen.
The prologue of the novel along with chapter one reeled me right in. While the first part of the novel set the scene, explained the background and had a lot of "startling moments" of people playing pranks it wasn't until the last 1/4 of the book my blood pressure decided to spike. The last part of the book had me at the edge of my seat and I was screaming in my head for people to MOOOOVE GOOOOOO GET OUT OF THERE lol!!!
They definitely do not make horror movies like they used to but this book helped fill the void!
So, while reading this, I could picture it as I would a slasher movie. You had all the typical set-ups for the creepy moments: the jump scare at her place of work that can easily be explained by an annoying friend who does pranks, the constant feel of someone watching that may or may not actually be happening, the big party where everyone's getting drunk and so on until the finale. My main issue? There was little character development and I didn't really care about any of them. The only one who I really wanted to get to know more, who kind of tugged on my heartstrings was Costa, and there wasn't nearly enough of him to make up for the rest. Fox and Jack both grated on my nerves more than anything. Fox was extremely paranoid and making all these connections out of nowhere. She was so wrapped up in herself she wasn't really paying attention to her cousin, or even really cared about the toll her breaking up with her boyfriend--who was serious enough they were living together--might have on her. It was entertaining, had some good moments, but mostly....not what I was looking for.
I probably won't continue reading this series. As for recommending? I mean, if you're good with little character development but some good jumps and thrills here and there, go for it. This just wasn't for me.
Emerald O’Brien has hit this one out of the ballpark!!! Bleed is her latest thriller and a terrific start to her new series The Skull Serial Killer Thriller!! A psychological thriller and horror mix, I haven’t read one like this in a while!!! This is well written and fast paced, you will not want to put it down. It is highly suspenseful, eerie, sinister and thrilling. Ms. O’Brien has out done herself….she will give you goosebumps you will have long after finishing. I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish! Spine chilling and unpredictable, this one will stay with you!! Ohhhh…..and that heart stopping jaw dropping ending, well let’s just say the lights were on all night after this one. Just look at that cover….it is scary in itself!! Kudos to you Emerald O’Brien….I CANNOT wait for the next one!!!
Thank you Emerald O’Brien for the honor to receive an advanced copy of this unbelievably awesome story to read and review!!! The opinions expressed are strictly my own. #emeraldobrien #bleed #theskullserialkillerthriller. #arc #indieauthor #psychologicalthriller. #horror
When the synopsis - and the author - say that Bleed is for fans of Scream and Halloween, you know you are in for something good. A blend of both movies, and another late 90s slasher (that I won't mention for fear of spoiling the end), it reads just like a slasher movie. Fox, the protagonist, is already having a tough time when she hears someone while she is taking out the trash at work. No one should be around, but she knows she heard a cough and the door shut by itself despite her precaution to keep it open. She tries to ignore the incident, but she keeps seeing and hearing things when no one should be there. Hoping to keep her mind off things, Fox agrees to attend a Halloween party, but she still can't shake the feeling of being watched. Then she catches the latest news story...
Perfect for slasher fans. The rationale, the twist, everything works well together. This was fun.
This serial killer whodunit follows the trail of a brutal murder by a man only known as The Skull. Information about the victim trickles in throughout, mostly through the story’s main characters, Fox and Jack. These two cousins are dealing with some family issues, and for a little while I forgot I was reading a horror story. Fox and Jack are well developed, and with the number of minor characters introduced, you could sense a bloodbath was on the horizon. The foreshadowing and psychological elements add nicely to the overall plot, as you wondered which time the person stalking around in the skull mask wasn’t going to be a member of the group. There was some extraneous dialogue at times, and the last chapter before the epilogue didn’t need to be so long. The epilogue itself could have worked as the prologue for the sequel, but the author clearly wanted her readers to know that this story wasn’t finished.
I have been a lover of thrillers and suspense novels for such a long time, and when I found Emerald O'Brien that love grew! I am so happy to be a part of her readers team and share with the world how great her writing is!
I was so excited for Bleed! This one was everything I could have hoped for and more. Emerald O'Brien writes a wonderful, and spooky story that will have your heart pounding and jumping out of your skin. I love all spooky things and this one hit the spot for me. This is a great read for spooky season. It gave me all the scream vibes (which is one of my favorite thriller movies!) The characters were just amazing, and the opening scene gave me all the goosebumps and made me want to keep reading. I can't wait for book 2! This is my favorite Emerald O'Brien novel to date! (until book 2!)
Do you like scary movies? Do you have a soft spot for a slasher flick? If so, this book will be a great fit.
It’s Halloween and time to party! Jack, Fox, and their friends are off to do their traditional party for the night. What could possibly go wrong? With the arrival of The Skull, plenty could go wrong. The friends will find themselves locked into a battle for survival. Posts always find a way to come back and secrets will never truly stay hidden.
I found the first half of the book a very slow burn. It felt like we spend a lot of time just observing everyone interact and building bits of tension. I will admit I just wanted something to happen, but this is the first book in the series so I guess we had a bit of character building. Once we hit the last section of the book, the pace picked up and the bodies finally started to fall.
