The Gloriana Set

Rate this book
The War is won, and Hermione Granger is back at Hogwarts as an “Eighth Year”, feeling reckless and determined to shed her prim bookworm persona. She will do as she pleases, and anyone who doesn’t like it will see the business end of her wand. Also returning is Draco Malfoy, universally hated but determined to restore his family’s name. Hermione’s hopes for a quiet school year are quickly dashed as she contends with mischievous First Years, killer plants, enchanted hair accessories, a totally inappropriate Moaning Myrtle, renegade Death Eaters, a nice vampire, a poorly named study group, a depraved party, and mysterious, threatening blood messages on the castle walls. We have redemption, partial redemption and (sadly or hilariously) no redemption at all. Throw in a snarky, disturbingly attractive Draco with his own secret agenda, and we have a very slow-burn Dramione with a side of who-dun-it.

This was PERFECTION 🙏🏻their banter the longing!! The angst the fluff UGHH it’s so so perfect 🤭🤭🤭 and Draco is so so amazing and perfect and Hermione doesn’t gaf about anything she had me laughing all the time. This reminded me a lot of commentarius which is also the best thing I’ve ever read.

Kind of wish some scenes were a bit more detailed if yk…

4.1/5

An unexpectedly decent, and humorous read. I don't usually enjoy 8th Year fics, but this one has me thoroughly hooked. The author really took her time in building on academic theories and it engaged me just as much as the main storyline. Although I enjoy broody Draco, Draco who is open with his feelings is a breath of fresh air. Him taunting Hermione openly while laying his own feelings bare for her to see:

“You’re wasting your time with Theo, Granger. You think he’ll be any easier to manage? A smiling, scrubbed-up, more palatable version of what you really want?”

“Never presume again to know what I want, Malfoy,” Hermione said, her voice purposely cold this time. “I am far from over what happened in the charms classroom and I’m not your plaything either.”

“Of course not, you’re something better.” Malfoy smirked. “I now have my own little war hero. Merlin, if you could only have seen yourself, bursting into McGonagall’s office like an angry lioness, defending me tooth and claw. Oh, the look on Pot-head’s face!”

“Don't call him that! And I thought you didn’t like me fixing things for you.”

“I don’t like you fixing things behind my back,” he responded, uncrossing his arms and pointing a long finger at her. “But feel free to continue leaping into situations, yelling and defending my honor. It’s very arousing.”

Hermione's decision to change out of her bookworm, goody-two-shoes self was also satisfying. It was gratifying to see her revenge against Astoria and how she's competent in protecting herself.

“So pretty right now, aren’t you, little girl?” Hermione continued relentlessly, her voice still low. She was going to fucking end this—right here, right now. “But you won’t always be pretty … better find yourself a title quickly, Greengrass, before the bulging toad eyes and wide toad smile come out in your face and you're just a tall, skinny Umbridge with a little … diamond … bow in your …”

The storyline was engaging and there was a good balance between relationship development, mystery, and side characters' development.

Honestly when Lucius's letter arrived, I thought Draco would've reacted more rashly.

“I demand the immediate return of our property by any means necessary to Malfoy Manor. I look forward to your reply confirming that this has been accomplished. Only then will you again have the right to call me,

Father”

But he came through!

“Dear Sir,

I regret to say I am unable to accede to your request. The object in question is in the possession of an individual more than worthy of receiving it, and I will not accept its return. Two more objects remain in my personal possession, to use as I see fit.

“As for disgracing my name, I clearly remember a day at Flourish and Blotts in my Second Year, when Arthur Weasley said to you, “We have a very different idea of what disgraces the name of wizard.” His words proved prophetic, I think, and undoubtedly there will be many times in the future where you and I disagree on how to best honor the Malfoy legacy.

Sincerely,

Lord Draco Malfoy

His sassy sign-off was hilarious. It was also a pleasant surprise when Hermione sided him immediately by commenting on Lucius' audacity to question Draco's authority as the head of the household.

I really enjoyed the friendship amongst Neville, Ginny, and Hermione too. They formed some sort of camaraderie after breaking through their own stereotypes of Slytherins to ending up in some sort of risque entanglements with said group. This bit amongst the three of them made me laugh a little, not Neville growing too attached to his plant and naming it Wendy:

“Of course she’s alright,” Neville said indignantly. Ginny backed off and let him sit up. “I threatened it with an icy frost that would freeze its leaves and snap its branches. The poor darling lashed out at Pansy with its vines and I had to conjure icicles to pin them down. Don’t worry,” he added. “The vines were fine.”

“Nice, Neville,” Ginny said approvingly. “Take a witch to see a homicidal plant so you can protect her in a virile way. Well done.”

“Wendy is not homicidal!” Neville cried.

“It certainly is,” Hermione said. “All those Winkweeds should be Incendioed.”

“We’ve come far afield,” Ginny said. “What I want to know is—how did Parkinson show her gratitude?” Neville’s face was brick-red. “Tell Aunt Ginny now.”

During Draco's first run-in with Kingsley and Harry, he had to take Veritaserum. His confidence In Hermione got me kicking my feet in the air, and look at what a cute moment this turned into:

“I suppose you’re all right,” Draco said reluctantly. “You Gryffindors have no sense of self-preservation.”

“Says the man who volunteered to take Veritaserum.”

A tiny shrug. “I knew you would protect me.”

“Well, then you can protect me, too,” Hermione said.

His eyes took on that unblinking basilisk stare. “That’s right, if you let me,” he said quietly.

Also, another moment that made me swoon a little. I don't know why but at this paragraph, Draco seemed so incredibly suave:

She was leaning against the wall outside Ancient Runes, reviewing the limitations of the Inanimatus Conjurus spell, when footsteps prompted her to look up. Draco was striding toward her briskly, his face unreadable, black robe flapping. He walked straight up to her, and for a mad instant she thought he was going to shake her hand, he looked that businesslike, but instead he placed a hand on the wall beside her head and brushed her lips with his.

Draco was honestly killing it with his seduction techniques in this fic. His timed-comments were impeccable:

“I think this is a simple light, placed inside the stone.” She pointed her wand at it. “Intermisa,” she said, a breaking spell.

A crack appeared and the stone cleaved in half, releasing the light, which dissipated into the air and left the crystal pieces behind.

“A clever move, dear Miss Granger, but it won’t earn you full marks,” said Bluebell, floating beside them.

“Why not?” Hermione said, surprised. “I identified the spell and removed it.”

“But you broke the object,” Bluebell said. “Do you always break things just to see what’s inside, Miss Granger?” She drifted away, leaving Hermione open-mouthed.

A hand slid over hers and tightened. She could feel the edges of the broken quartz pieces scrape her palm. “Well, dear Miss Granger?” Draco whispered in her ear. Her chest suddenly felt tight. “Would you break me to look inside?”

Hermione turned to look at him. “Will I have to?” she asked.

“No,” he said. “Apertus.” Open.

In another one of Draco's letters, this time to Narcissa, showed his curtness and sassiness that forced a small laugh out of me:

“Dear Mother,

I hope this message finds you well. I am courting Hermione Granger. Console Father as well as you can.

Love,

Draco

This book was filled with smart and funny banter and honestly, I could read their back-and-forths for another 500 pages:

“I’m confused,” Lavender said. “What’s wrong with the question again?”

“The question is flawed because neither flobberworms nor pond slime is required to complete the potion,” Hermione said. “If you just monitor the fire carefully it will thicken …”

Draco rolled his eyes. “Now that’s just semantics—”

“Wacky Faint.”

He held up a finger. “Don’t start."

Another hilarious moment:

Harry turned back to Hermione, his auror training compelling him to get to the bottom of this. “Why did you steal his snitch?”

“So he would show me his family’s rune manuscript. Harry, it was the Codex Runica, a significant relic from the early ….”

“I don’t believe this,” Harry said.

“I know,” Hermione said. “The Malfoys really should be more generous.”

“Did I or did I not give you hours with that Codex, even after you tried to blackmail me?” Draco asked her. “I practically had to pin a cup to your shirt so you wouldn’t drool all over the vellum. Then you put a wand to my throat.”

The Squeaky Mice were simply too adorable. They are like little minions, always up to mischief.

A crowd of older Hufflepuffs ran by, waving more black-and-yellow banners. “Party in the Badger Common Room!” crowed Justin Finch-Fletchley.

“BADGER POWER!” the Mice yelled. “PARTY!”

Finally, although I don't think this was supposed to be a funny moment, I still thought it was pretty humorous the way Draco went back on his word immediately, before Hermione could even finish her sentence:

She hardened her voice. “Draco, I want to be honest with you, I really do, but if you go spare and turn up at the Burrow, flinging curses, I will want a conversation about what we’re doing here. Do you understand?”

He gave her an irritated look. “Of course I do,” he said. His tone implied she was mad to think he’d do anything at all impulsive or misguided.

“You’d better,” Hermione said, not the least bit convinced. “Ron called me a Death Eater whore and I—Draco! What are you— Expelliarmus!”

I did not have high expectations for this because I didn't really enjoy The Darkwood Wand , but this is honestly by far the best 8th Year fic I've read. It was light-hearted, interesting, and amusing.

This was super cute and super fun. It read like an actual HP book for the most part. Adorbs but wish it was WAY spicier, I hate being tortured with dark and depraved promises with no follow through

This fic almost feels canon. I throughally enjoyed it.
Very inventive creation of spells and potions. I find a lot of fic's often forget to include some magic.

Wowweeee what a great story to end 2024. This 8th year fic truly exceeded my expectations. Hermione and Draco were *chefs kiss* in this one. Potentially one of my favorite versions ever. Everything about this fic was amazing. The side characters. The plot. The banter. There was some truly hilarious dialogue in this fic that just made it so enjoyable. One of my favorites to date!!

I really loved this. I always love a hogwarts setting dramione. unfortunately, no nott/hermione/draco threesome — or any spice really — but it was such a damn good read. I miss the squeaky mice already 😭

Overall, it was ok I guess, but I wouldn't recommend reading it to anyone. I don't like the direction the author took for several of the characters, though I liked Leila. Luna is supposed to be eccentric, but she's still a Ravenclaw. She was made out to be fairly dumb in this one though, and I didn't like that. There was one line that seemed like true Luna, but just the one. Harry didn't seem right to me either. Hermione was actually just mean for a lot of the story and a complete tease. I felt sorry for Draco most of the time. She was just portrayed as a very selfish character. The things she did to help others, much of the time were for her own benefit. The rape scene was hard, but what bothered me more was how she handled it afterward. She just seemed so eager to tell everyone about it, and it came across as attention seeking. The writing style was a bit problematic for me as well. Many of the jokes were just wildly overused to the point that it wasn't that funny anymore (like PORN, etc.), and descriptions/action words seemed overly strong for the situations (all the stomping, sneering, violently knocking things over, etc.). There was just way too much highschool/teen drama. While I'm totally fine with a long book (All the Young Dudes was incredible), this was unnecessarily long and completely boring at the end.

It’s a DNF at chapter 25 for me. This was way too long, unnecessary long, and even if there were some funny moment it just wasn’t enough to kept me reading.

I couldn’t understand this Hermione. I get that she just survived a war and she is still a teenager but still ? What does she want ? What are her motivations ? Those things are not clear, and if it was done on purpose, then I guess it was not my thing.

I loved this version of Draco though. And I tried to finish this fic for him, but truly I think the writing style was really not for me.

Still there were good things about this fic ( I am talking about you first years), just not enough to my taste.

This was lots of fun and I really enjoyed it even though the 8th year fics are not usually my thing. Hermione was delightfully deranged throughout this one and I was 100% here for it the whole way through. Her revenge on Astoria was phenomenal. Her banter with Malfoy was also great, and while his sudden interest in her at the start of 8th year was perhaps a little unbelievable, overall I really liked their relationship. There’s not much smut in this one. I didn’t really appreciate Theo’s character, he annoyed me mostly and I guess I prefer a more “damaged” Theo.

Note to self: this one is named after a set of charmed hair accessories that DM gives HG. There’s a mystery involving “Die Mudbloods” being written in blood on walls. Hermione is determined to be different this year but is actually just trigger happy more than anything. She dates both TN & DM, although not at the same time. BZ & GW are a thing but ultimately it’s implied that she’ll end up back with HP probably. A little bit of Ron-bashing but he’s not too bad in this one. NL & PP together which I always love; and Neville’s great in this one. DM & HG “adopt” some younger students - the Squeaky Mice - in this one, which is always fun and they’re delightful here.
