Review for complete series

I am so sad about this; I really like Yoko Maki and I thought I would love this series as her works have continuously been getting better. Romantica Clock tells the story of twins Akane and Aoi - the former is naive and happy-go-lucky whilst the latter is studious and somewhat stoic. With Maki's beautiful art, this should have been a perfectly lovely story about the dynamics between these polar opposite twins, their family and social life, school struggles and of course romance. And while it had all that, it was just so... boring.

I generally liked the characters but I don't feel as though we ever got to know them properly. I can't relate to why Akane feels so extremely competitive toward her brother Aoi. Most of the other family members felt redundant and friends were introduced left and right without us ever truly getting to know them. The romance was even worse - Akane and her love interest might be very cute but she is much too immature for me to feel invested in them. I don't understand why he likes her and her liking him back feels just like a whim. Aoi's romance on the other hand isn't even cute, it's bland and comes across as entirely one sided.

All in all, it is still a cute manga but it could have been so much more and it should not have taken me as long as it did to finish this (6 weeks for 10 volumes!). It was just so bland and uneventful that the only thing left for me to truly like was the beautiful art. It's also not a genre thing as I can enjoy slice of life stories as well as sweet romances with young characters. There's just something missing in Romantica Clock and it really saddens me given that I like the author.

Also ich mag die Reihe total, aber von dem Band war ich ein wenig enttäuscht. Zum einen kam Akane hier so naiv rüber, dass ich schon ins Fremdschämen kam. Ihr Bruder Aoi war wieder mega sympathisch und hat das ganze rausgerissen. Handlungstechnisch ist kaum etwas passiert, aber es gab wieder einige witzige Szenen und vor allem so mega süße Zeichnungen. Der Zeichenstil ist voll und ganz mein Ding. Hier gibt es nicht nur Großaufnahmen der Charaktere, sonder auch viel Hinter- und Vordergrun sowie jede Menge Abwechslung in der Gestaltung der Szenen, Klamotten, Mimik und Gestik u.v.m.
Die Kurzgeschichte die an die Hauptstory angehangen wurde fand ich leider auch nur mittelmäßig. Sie kam sehr übertrieben und kaum glaubwürdig herüber. Das war nicht mein Fall.

Beh, la parte con Akane e Shin mi è piaciuta molto. Anche se non mi piace che, solitamente, nei manga giapponesi siano spesso le ragazze a essere ignoranti come capre.

Non avendo fratelli faccio fatica a capire l'atteggiamento di Akane nei confronti del gemello. E l'idea di poter entrare nella sua stessa scuola mi suona molto strana. Anche perché lei ha dei votacci paragonata a lui.

Molto bella la storia bonus alla fine, con la protagonista che "si fa" di cioccolata e sopravvive al bullismo grazie a un compagno di scuola.

In the third volume of Romantica Clock, there’s more character development and the allegiances between some characters change. Akane has her second love interest already which goes on a bit fast. The narrative tempo was generally not the best and there are big time frames in one single volume.

I found some of the aspects of this volume a bit questionable though. For one, the traditional gender roles are very strong here and a boy gets judged by the main characters just because he bakes. Akane gets also hit by her mom one time and it’s brushed off like it’s nothing and used as a comic relief which is obviously problematic.
