Haven Ripley is a fourteen-year-old girl who hasn't been outside in seven years. Trapped in a society where a physical abnormality has stripped her of basic human rights, Haven must come to terms with her reality and fight back against the world that has deemed her unworthy. After a chance encounter with a stranger, Haven finds enough courage to do the one thing she never thought she would do - run away. But what she didn't realize, was that by doing so, she may have put everyone she loves in grave danger, and now it's up to her to save them.
I started Marked a few days ago and was quickly immersed in this dystopian America where “Marked” individuals — those who were born with ring birthmarks around their fingers — are ostracized from society.
Haven has lived all 14 years of her life hidden in her family’s house due to her Marked status, but when she suspects that her father may be dangerous, she runs away with a pair of Marked kids who were hiding in her family’s barn. But she doesn’t realize how her actions will affect her family, unknowingly putting them in grave danger. And she’s the only one who can save them.
This book is the perfect dystopian YA series starter. With excellent pacing, a balance of suspense and romance, a cast of dynamic characters, and a well-fleshed-out dystopian setting, it has all the elements to chart with some of the more popular books of its kind. I flew through this book in just over a day, and it really made me nostalgic for some of the dystopian books I loved growing up. Marked definitely lends itself to a duology or trilogy, and I’m excited to see what Book 2 has in store!
This was a action packed story with interesting characters. I would have liked a little more background on how the Marked people began and/or a little more context in the "place". Where are we? Futuristic USA?another country? another world all together? It was a little confusing. Overall this is a very enjoyable read.
