The Mastership Game

Rate this book
The ultimate conspiracy thriller. It is the most secret contest in the world -- for the highest stakes. At the beginning of the 21st century, only one institution stands above the sea of corruption into which most governments, councils and think tanks have fallen. The College, established on a Scottish island in the Middle Ages, is the most powerful and secretive organisation in the world. It is subject to the control only of its Master. So who will be the next Master? The one who wins the Mastership Game. Five Fellows are selected. Each must fulfil certain tasks to be accepted as the candidate. And they must understand the moral and philosophical nature of the Game. But there's a catch. The players must take part in a contest without knowing the rules -- and there can only be one winner. Once committed, things are the opposite of what they expect. They quickly need to understand the true nature of the game if they want to stay alive. So how high are the stakes? Is murder on the cards? And are others playing as well -- by different rules? The only clue is an old Chinese puzzle box, whose maker died hundreds of years ago. The box is far beyond their reach and its secret has never been solved. Yet it contains both the path to the Mastership...and its ultimate answer. The Game is played all over the world. The players require all their skills to survive, let alone solve the clues. The winner is uncertain until the surprise ending. Compelling and fascinating, The Mastership Game is a race involving a tempestuous clash of character and wills as the players, and the reader, are forced to consider the true nature of power and just what they will do to attain it.

A Great Hidden Thriller - The Apprentice meets Survivor, in a book!

I read this book many years ago. I literally could not put this book down once I started reading it, and everyone I have lent my book to have concurred that this is a wonderful read.

The Mastership Game is a not well known novel and is more than just a thriller. It is a discourse on the nature of power. The "College" is one of the most powerful and secret organisations in the world, and is under the control of the “Master”. It is time for a new Master. Five Fellows of the College are chosen to be part of the ultimate competition - The Mastership Game.

With quotes from Machievelli and Sun Tzu's The Art of War, this book will cause the reader to consider the nature of power, how far one will go to attain it, and who is worthy of wielding it. I highly recommend this book!

I don't understand how The Da Vinci Code is so widely read, and yet this gem by Scott McBain is so neglected. I guess it is all about publicity.

Scott McBain also has another good book, The Coins of Judas, which explores the meaning of evil. That one gave me the shudders.

These are the things you will discover as you read the compelling story of The Mastership Game. See if you can foresee what will happen and who will win. Join in this thought provoking mystery and may the game begin.

I first read this about 15 years ago when I was a teenager. I remember really enjoying it at that point.
Reading it again now, I still found some of the ideas interesting, but I was also very aware of the amount of exposition in it. Quotes from Machiavelli, Sun Tzu and the Tao are used liberally throughout, and while they do support and in some ways drive the story, it feels like they make up about 10% of the book! It's an undemanding read generally, probably good for the beach or a lazy Sunday afternoon, but not one I'll be returning to again.

All in all this is a good book. The mastership game is enduring in the way it explores power and the means by which different people go around in getting its ultimate form. It combines political philosophy, mystery and a few good plot twists.

The only reason it’s not 5 stars is because I believe the book could have delivered more. It has a lot of premise (who doesn’t love a book about a game - the hunger games? Game of thrones?), and a game that directly draws from philosophers like Machiavelli and Lau Tzu… my expectations were higher.

WOW! this really lived up to its review of being the ultimate conspiracy thriller. The idea was new, the settings well described, interesting characters, bits of history and philosophy and a page turner. what more could I ask for? 450 pages of real enjoyment.

The game is set, Who ever wins becomes the head master of a secret school. All world leaders will refer to you for advice.
There are four candidates, & one challenge.
Each candidate has chosen a philosophy to win the challenge with!
A great book where philosophies go up against each other!
Great read!

One of the best novels you will ever read.....trust me!! THIS BOOK IS BEYOND 'GOOD', it is, frankly, a masterpiece. McBain, a writer I freely admit to knowing little about, has authored one of the greatest fiction novels I will ever read, and if there is any justice in this world, this novel will eventually be as well known as some of Stephen King's books, or John Grisham's novels.... fabulous.

My second reading of this tale, and I enjoyed it as much as the first time. The master ship game is to decide the new master of an internationally renowned peace college. Some if the characters are more likeable than others, and it certainly made me think about my motivations
