Making Out in Indonesian: Revised Edition (Indonesian Phrasebook)

Rate this book
Making Out in Indonesian is a fun, accessible and thorough Indonesian phrasebook and guide to the Indonesian language as it's really spoken.

Kamu sangat menarik! Bisa kita ketemu lagi? —(You're very attractive! Shall we meet again?) Answer this correctly in Indonesian and you may be going on a hot date. Incorrectly, and you could be hurting someone's feelings or getting a slap! Indonesian classes and textbooks tend to spend a lot of time rehearsing for the same fictitious scenarios but chances are while in Indonesia you will spend a lot more time trying to make new friends or start new romances—something you may not be prepared for.

If you are a student, businessman or tourist traveling to Indonesia and would like to have an authentic and meaningful experience, the key is being able to speak like a local. This friendly and easy-to-use Indonesian phrasebook makes this possible. Making Out in Indonesian has been carefully designed to act as a guide to modern colloquial Indonesian for use in everyday informal interactions—giving access to the sort of catchy Indonesian expressions that aren't covered in traditional language materials. Each expression is written in Indonesian so that in the case of difficulties the book can be shown to the person the user is trying to communicate with.

This book got me in the mood for learning more Indonesian ;) I have only learned formal language so I thought it might be good to brush up on some slang. And in this case some very dirty slang.

It’s funny, I just finished reading short stories in Swedish and took no written notes. With this phrase book I just filled two A4 pages. Although I knew what I was getting myself into, I was actually quite shocked at some of the colourful language provided here. Not just bedroom talk but nasty insults. It’s not the time and place to elaborate here but nothing was off limits. I am still shocked.

An almost pocket sized book full of useful phrases to kick start your Indonesian language journey. To be fair I didn't learn a great deal but shared a few laughs when reading aloud to local speakers.

You can learn such classic lines such as

You have a fat ass.
You faggot!
White boy.
You piece of garbage!
Your mothers vagina!

and many others favourites like

You testicle!
Total prostitute!
Go away, fuck your mother!

There's even the translation for the word cunt.
However there is a warning, it states that this specific word is even more of a trenchant insult than the English equivalent.

That was all from Chapter 8 - Curses and Insults.

It's a bit of a laugh

This book is really helpful for learning how to cuss, pick up someone at a bar, or start a fight....all in Indonesian!! I don't know how much of this I will use in daily life (not sure if I want to make insulting comments about people's mothers), but I have a feeling that I will be better able to understand the local people around me as a result of reading this handy book. It was a quick read that was well worthwhile for me since I want to be able to communicate in words that people actually use instead of the formal language that I learned in class. I would rate this compilation of phrases highly since there's nothing else really like it out there on the market.
