Last week I finally had a chance to sit down and read the book. And let me tell you, it was a nice read! It’s short, so it doesn’t take very long to get through. If you’re just getting in to digital painting with Sketchbook Pro, it’s a good primer book. It goes through all the tools, how to customize your interface, and how to make custom tools to suit your needs. Then it also goes in to painting techniques, including how to glaze colors with layers, how to color an inked drawing, how to color a scanned drawing, and so on.

I was very impressed by the quality of the illustrations. Gil Robles obviously is very talented. You get to see a breakdown step-by-step of several pieces, including the lovely painting from the cover of the book. So if you’re looking to start digital painting, or want to pick up a few tips and tricks to improve your painting, I’d recommend this book for that. It was such a quick read that I finished it in just a few hours, but it would also be a great reference for if you forget how to do something in the program, or want to read over the painting breakdowns a few times to really soak in the process.
