Louis de Funès is regarded as one of the best and most popular French actors of all time. Despite his international fame, Louis de Funès remains mostly unknown in the English-speaking world. Which is quite a shame, as I grew up watching so many of his amazingly funny movies. Though it’s fun to know that Les aventures de Rabbi Jacob (The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob) and a few other movies of his are at least available to the English speakers among us.
This memoir was written by two of the actor’s sons. And the book starts with a little behind the scenes story about the iconic scene from Les aventures de Rabbi Jacob in the chewing gum factory. Which gives us a peek at who he was as a person and as an actor. In the movie, he pretty much plays a racist businessman who ends up pretending to be a rabbi to escape from assassins. And while the plot is satisfaction guaranteed, it’s his character arc that’s heartwarming and very much worth seeing.
After that, we learn more about his early upbringing, his family and how he met his second wife, the mother of the two sons who wrote the memoir. There’s also an interesting anecdote about his own life during the second World War in occupied France that served as a source of inspiration for a particular moment in La Grande Vadrouille (The Great Stroll), which is still one of the most successful movies ever released in France. We then learn how much his wife supported him in his acting career and how he became an actor in the first place.
As said, this memoir was written by two of the actor’s sons. So it’s written from their perspective. Which means the main focus of this memoir is on the actor’s private life, and on the makings of the movies in which one of his sons plays a role. In the part about his private life, we learn about his strengths as the person behind the actor, but also his flaws. About the positives of fame but also about the many negatives. For example, we learn that he and his wife sometimes went away for weeks to shoot a movie. Which means that the kids had to miss their parents quite often growing up. But in between movies, he was there for them.
The most interesting part about his acting career is shown in the form of his son’s experiences working together with him in some of his movies. Especially in the movie Le Grand Restaurant (The Big Restaurant). We learn a lot about the actor’s enormous comedic insight, his work ethic and perfectionism. For example: when he felt a scene wasn’t working, he stopped shooting. Instead of trying to work through it and stay on schedule, he brainstormed as long as it took to find a way to make the scene work and make it even better.
The only negative about this memoir is that it just doesn’t really feel complete. Some famous movies of his are mentioned and occasionally a nice little anecdote is told. But despite him appearing in well over a hundred movies, only a handful of movies are discussed in a bit more detail. Most notably the movies his son acted in, as the son can of course speak from first-hand experience about those. It would have been nice to read a bit more about the six Le Gendarme de Saint-Tropez (The Troops of St. Tropez) movies for example. Though it’s still as good as it gets, since the actor is unable to tell his own story.
Overall, a flawed but solid memoir that details the life of one of France’s greatest actors. The man who always managed to put a smile on the faces of his fans with every movie he released.

"Stále mě ohrožuje nepozornost a pohodlnost. Jestli usnu na vavřínech, na tom, co funguje, stanu se malým dobrým hercem, který nikoho nepřekvapí."
Není výstižnějšího citátu z úst tohoto velkého komediálního herce, který je obsažen v epilogu této vzpomínkové knihy a vystihuje tak podstatu jeho hereckého umění.
Příjemný exkurz do poválečné francouzské kinematografie i divadla, plný vzpomínek z per jeho synů Patricka a Oliviera. Vytvářejí tak osobní profil umělce, který je i v naší kotlině stále velmi populární. Kniha také vyvrací mýtus, že Louis Germain David de Funès de Galarza se stal populárním až "na staré kolena" ve svých 50 letech rolemi v prvním Četníkovi ze Saint Tropez. Naopak tehdy už byl velkým divadelním bardem a měl za sebou desítky filmových rolí, i když ty největší přišly právě až v 60. a 70. letech spolu s poslední klapkou v Četníkovi (a četnice) z roku 1982 a jeho následné smrti.
Někde mezi 3 a 4 hvězdičkami za zajímavý mimokariérní pohled, bohužel však s chronologickými výkyvy a občasnou nenávazností v rámci kapitol. Ale jde o vzpomínky, hezké i uctivé... Člověka to vybudí pustit si nějaký film, s jinou optikou diváka, jak si třeba moc lezli na nervy de Funès s velikány Maraisem ve Fantomasovi nebo Gabinem v Tetovaném;-)

Dla miłośników Louisa de Funèsa, książka oparta na wspomnieniach synów aktora o ojcu, stanowi nie lada gratkę. Z jednej strony można nazwać ją biografią, z drugiej, synowie de Funèsa z wielką ochotą przytaczają całe mnóstwo anegdotek związanych z ich życiem rodzinnym. Fakty, ubarwione smakowitymi opowiastkami powodują, że poznajemy życie i karierę zawodową komika, wybuchając co chwilę śmiechem i doskonale się bawiąc.
Najwyraźniej synowie odziedziczyli poczucie humoru po ojcu, zwłaszcza Oliver. Poza tym, sam Louis uwielbiał stwarzać w życiu komiczne sytuacje, natomiast nie lubił, gdy ktokolwiek nazbyt ingerował w jego prywatne życie.
"Nie mówcie o mnie za dużo" - na pewno takimi słowami aktor mógł przykazać swoim dzieciom, żeby po jego śmierci nadal dbali o jego prywatność, a oni wypełnili złożone przyrzeczenie. Louis de Funès był i pozostał dżentelmenem.
Patrick de Funès wystąpił w filmie tylko raz, jako dziecko. Został lekarzem. Oliver de Funès przez jakiś czas rozwijał karierę aktorską u boku ojca, ale ostatecznie został pilotem.
Niezmiernie interesujące są te opowieści, które pokazują, jak różne osoby, z którymi de Funès miał styczność, lub które obserwował, znalazły później odzwierciedlenie w kreowanych przez niego postaciach, jak bardzo poważnie traktował swoją pracę, pedantycznie wręcz się przygotowywał do ról i na poczekaniu, podczas realizacji filmu czy w czasie teatralnego przedstawienia, wymyślał nowe gagi.
Ciekawiło mnie również to, jakim był człowiekiem prywatnie. Podoba mi się takt, z jakim synowie uchylają rąbka tajemnicy.
Dla tych, kogo bawią filmy z udziałem Louisa de Funèsa, książka jest lekturą obowiązkową. Znajdziecie tam kwintesencję Louisa i mnóstwo śmiechu!

Tetszett a könyv, de az volt az érzésem, hogy a szerzők, Louis de Funes fiai reflektáltak valami/kre. Próbálták jó színben feltüntetni az apjukat, de én mégis azt szűrtem le, hogy nem volt egy egyszerű ember. Eddig nem olvastam róla semmit és nem is tervezek több könyvet olvasni az életéről.
Az egyik fia, Olivier is belekóstolt a színészmesterségbe. Érdekesnek találtam a színészettel, filmezéssel kapcsolatos történeteit, gondolatait.

Louis Germain David de Funès de Galarza (1914-1983), dit Louis de Fubès ou Fufu, acteur français. Encore une biographie de terminée et quelle magnifique écriture et témoignage venant de ses deux fils Patrick et Olivier ! Je l'ai dévoré en quelques heures seulement et j'ai pu être émue et rire à gorge déployée face à certaines anecdotes ( celle de la moto qu'Olivier voulait était juste incroyable ! ).
Sinon, comme pour Bourvil, je l'ai découvert à mes 12 ans dans le film "Le corniaud" de Gérard Oury (merveilleux réalisateur soit dit en passant !). Ses mimiques et ses répliques cultes ont bercé mon adolescence (et encore maintenant d'ailleurs). J'ai pu découvrir au fil des pages un homme profondément anxieux, strict mais juste avec ses enfants avec qui il allait faire des parties de pêche près de leur demeure du château de Clermont avec sa femme Jeanne.
Quand j'ai refermé le livre, j'ai eu un moment de nostalgie et me suis demandée comment aurait été ma vie si j'étais née à cette époque - Spoiler alert : la vie des femmes à cette époque ce n'était pas trop la joie non plus, mais au moins nous avons le droit de vote et c'est déjà pas trop mal - . Je me suis imaginée les représentations au théâtre, des parties de pêches, des visites dans la serre avec de bons légumes et fruits pour faire un bon repas avec la famille et les amis proches, les ballades dans les belles voitures de l'époque... Bon ok j'arrête mes rêveries sur une époque où je ne connais que peu de choses ^^''
Conclusion : lecture délicieuse sur un homme inimitable !

I grew up watching Louis de Funès's films. He's always been one of my most favourite actors. I'd even go as far as to say he's partly made me the person I am today. After all, being influenced by his movies and French culture in general, I made a choice to study French at university a couple of years ago. Reading this autobiography written by his two sons was, therefore, heartwarming and just overall beautiful. It reminded me of my childhood and it inspired kindness, hope and joy in me. Louis de Funès, merci beaucoup pour tout.

Sadly, my French isn’t what it used to be, so I used the translation tool a lot. A wonderful book about this ingenious actor, lovingly written by his sons. My only criticism would be that it’s not that structured, but more like a casual collage of memories...

Louis de Funes is somehow like a family member for us... his films are the only choice that can make everyone happy including my father, my husband, and small daughters to watch... this book is written by his 2 sons Patrick and Oliver which makes it very personal and authentic. Louis was one of the few humanists of the last century worth watching again and again...
