Vicki Baum, author of the acclaimed Grand Hotel, visited Shanghai in 1937. Her many friends there provided her with a wealth of information about China's convoluted politics, and the secret life and unique personalities of Shanghai--material she used as the basis of Shanghai '37. The hotel depicted in the novel was the Cathay, which, on August 14, 1937, following the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War, was attacked by a bomb. This incident, known as "Bloody Saturday," caused considerable damage and the deaths of many people. It forms the climax of Shanghai '37, a story that follows the lives of nine people to Shanghai and the hour of their death. This book, the second of Baum's "hotel" novels, was first published in America in 1939.

Vicki Baum (penname of Hedwig Baum) was born in a Jewish family in Vienna, Austria. She moved to the United States in 1932 and when her books were banned in the Third Reich in 1938, she started publishing in English. She became an American citizen in 1938 and died in Los Angeles, in 1960.

„Hotel Shanghai“ ist nach dem bekannteren „Menschen im Hotel“ der zweite große Hotelroman von Vicki Baum und zehn Jahre später entstanden, nämlich 1939. „Menschen im Hotel“ hat mir durchaus gefallen, war aber kein Hightlight für mich. Umso mehr freut es mich, dass ich mit „Hotel Shanghai“ wesentlich mehr anfangen konnte. Die ganze Prämisse finde ich allein sehr interessant: Das namengebende Hotel befand sich im internation1937alen Viertel der chinesischen Großstadt und wurde 1937 im zweiten Japanisch-Chinesischen Krieg durch eine Bombe zerstört. Das Buch erzählt die Geschichten der neun Menschen, die dabei ums Leben kamen. Ich konnte trotz intensiver Recherche nicht herausfinden, wie viel genau an der Geschichte historisch ist, insbesondere nicht, ob es die neun Protagonisten sind. Ich vermute, dass zumindest die Geschichten, die Vicki Baum um sie spinnt, fiktiv sind. Bei dem Hotel handelt es sich offenbar um einen Teil des heutigen Peace Hotels.

Das Buch ist in zwei große Teile gegliedert: Im ersten Teil erfahren wir die Vorgeschichte der neun Menschen, die anschließend im zweiten Teil im Hotel aufeinandertreffen. Vor allem dieser erste Teil hat mir ausnehmend gut gefallen. Ich fand die Charakterisierungen viel interessanter und umfassender als die in „Menschen im Hotel“. Auch die sehr unterschiedlichen Hintergründe waren faszinierend. Im zweiten Teil befürchtete ich eine Zeit lang, dass das Ganze in eine sehr anstrengende Liebesgeschichte münden würde, aber auch hier beweist Vicki Baum klasse und es kommt alles ganz anders. Ich werde definitiv weitere Werke der weitgehend vergessenen Autorin lesen.

Und obwohl das Ende von Anfang an klar ist, ist dieser 600-Seiten Roman spannend wie ein Krimi - und gleichzeitig poetisch und weise wie ein Haiku

This was a really nice find. I found it in a Salvation Army story and thought it was going to be a terribly outdated overlong novel, but it wasn't. It was fantastic. The author spends the first half of the book introducing us to each other characters, with their life stories from their births to the date in 1937 when the Shanghai Hotel is bombed. There are Europeans escaping Hitler, Americans, Chinese peasants and revolutionaries, and Japanese spies. All of their stories are detailed and engrossing. The ending was also very thorough and impressive. A great historical epic. Recommended.

A beautiful book where several stories intertwined, and completely different characters come to meet in the same place at the same time. Taking place in China during the 2nd world war, it is full of surprises and completely captivating!

Dieses Buch hat mich überrascht.
Es spinnt die Geschichte von Menschen, die nur ihr Ende gemeinsam haben.

Und das erstaunliche für mich war, dass die Charaktere so detailliert und klar beschrieben sind, und selbst der kulturelle Hintergrund klar aus ihrer Sprache und ihren Handlungen abzulesen ist.

Ich würde dieses Buch empfehlen, vor allem für Leser, die an Charakteren interessiert sind.

Mostly forgotten in the US, today, Vicki Baum has been republished in France, and I believe she’s still in print in her country, Germany, so hopefully there’s still an audience out there to enjoy her engrossing books. Because her novels were such massive international commercial successes, and because she never pretended to be an intellectual writer in the mold of some of the other authors of the German language, like Thomas Mann or Stefan Zweig, she never quite gained the respect of the literary establishment. She never was taken seriously, it seems. To be sure, Baum is the quintessential popular writer, the way one could be defined between the two world wars. Yet she’s much more than just a pulp or romance writer (as some of the covers of her novels could make believe). The truth is, among all writers of popular fiction, she remains one of the most talented, and she deserves much more recognition than she’s gotten so far. Shanghaï Hotel is a wonderfully entertaining novel about China before the Maoist Revolution, when Europeans were still having a foot in the country. Fans of historical fiction are in for a treat. Baum’s talent shines especially in the way she develops, quite daringly, within the frame of the main story and without ever losing the reader, what are literally mini-novellas, each one centered on a specific character. I guess one could argue there’s something slightly old-fashioned about her narrative skills, but that doesn’t mean her writing is bad – it is not - and it does come with a certain nostalgic charm. Shanghaï Hotel is gripping, emotionally satisfying, adroitly constructed, and, in fact, very cleverly written. One can see why a lot of Baum’s novels became movies: there is something very cinematic in her vision. On top of that, Baum may be sentimental, but she’s never maudlin or soapy, and she’s actually a very good and subtle painter of the human heart. I have read this book in a French edition from 1997 that, strangely, is not available on Goodreads (the publisher is Phébus, which proposes other Baum titles in its catalogue).

Shanghái 1937. Confluyen en un lujoso hotel de la exclusiva concesión internacional nueve personajes procedentes de diversos rincones del mundo. Cana uno con su historia de triunfos, fracasos y miserias. Novela coral enmarcada en los años previos a la Segunda Mundial con el ascenso imparable del nazismo, la arrogancia del imperio japonés y los conflictos internos en China como paisaje de la trama.
Como "novela histórica" (género que se ha convertido en un cajón de sastre) propone un excelente análisis geopolítico . Como novela a secas es también excelente por la trama, por los personajes, por los conflictos de cada uno de ellos consigo mismo, con su entrono y con los otros personajes. Y, curiosamente (o no tanto), a veces son más fuertes las diferencias entre los propios occidentales que entre estos y los chinos.
Muy recomendable como documento histórico y estructura literatia.

I loved the first part, where the various characters are described. The second part became a bit soap-operaish in places but also had some good general observation. Knowing how the novel ends from the very first page onward, made it a bit of a struggle to keep reading but I liked the way Baum ended the book.

Fue muy grato dar con este libro, su estructura es única. La construcción de personajes es buenísima y le emocioné cuando fueron coincidiendo en la vida. Der Roman von 1939 gefiel mir gut, auch wenn er einen seltsamen Erzählrhythmus hat: Erstmal wird das Ende erzählt, nämlich dass bei einem Bombeneinschlag in einem Shanghaier Hotel neun Menschen ums Leben kommen (ein tatsächliches historisches Ereignis) – und dass hier die Geschichte dieser Menschen erzählt wird. Es folgen in Einzelkapiteln die Biografien aller neun nacheinander (Schauplätze unter anderem Berlin, Wien, Paris, Hawaii, Los Angeles), die sie nach Shanghai und in dieses Hotel geführt haben. Die zweite Hälfte des Romans setzt kurz vor dem Ausbruch des Zweiten Japanisch-Chinesischen Kriegs 1937 ein und schildert das Zusammentreffen und Interagieren der Protagonist*innen.

Damit wird eine ganze Epoche transportiert, nämlich die Jahrzehnte von Kolonialismus, kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen und gesellschaftlichem/politischem Umbruch in China und Japan. Die Handlung lässt kulturelle und menschliche Konzepte aufeinandertreffen, schildert sie immer wieder auch aus der Perspektive der anderen – ein erzähltechnisches Plädoyer für Toleranz. Ich war überrascht zu erfahren, dass Vicki Baum selbst lediglich wenige Tage in Shanghai verbracht hat während einer China-Reise – so detailreich und lebendig wirkt der Schauplatz, mit so vielen Fakten arbeitet Baum (und das, wo sie noch ohne Wikipedia recherchieren musste! Wie schon komplexe Wirtschaftsthemen in "Menschen im Hotel" hat Baum den Stoff offensichtlich wirklich durchdrungen). Und sie erzählt indirekt viel mehr, als ihr bewusst war, das merkt man vermutlich erst aus dem großen zeitlichen Abenstand.

Dominant ist auch das Thema Exil: Entwurzelung gab es nicht nur im europäischen Umfeld Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts, sondern weltweit durch Armut, Katastrophen, Kolonialherrschaft (wie der englischen, die ja britische Staatsbürger in Ämtern zur Kolonialverwaltung benötigte; Resultat waren ganze Generationen von Menschen, die in der Fremde geboren wurden und weder dort noch in der theoretischen Heimat zu Hause waren).

Vicki Baum racconta le vite di nove personaggi che si intrecciano nella Shanghai degli anni Trenta del Novecento. Fulcro attorno a cui ruotano le loro vicende è l’Hotel Shanghai che dà il titolo al libro. Situato lungo la Nankin Road, è prima simbolo di benessere e mondanità e poi della distruzione portata dalla guerra tra Cina e Giappone che, dopo essere stata evocata a più riprese nel corso del racconto, si materializza con brutalità.
Non ho particolarmente amato, però, la scelta di presentare i nove personaggi principali in una successione di capitoli distinti e indipendenti. Anche se, procedendo con la lettura, il fatto che ogni capitolo si chiuda con il protagonista che lascia il posto in cui si trova per imbarcarsi per Shanghai lascia presagire che a un certo punto ci sarà un punto di incontro tra tutte quelle storie così diverse, per oltre metà libro ho provato un senso di disorientamento, che mi ha reso particolarmente difficoltoso portare avanti la lettura.
Ho preferito, quindi, la seconda parte del romanzo che procede in maniera più organica e, a mio parere, più coinvolgente. Qui, Vicki Baum riesce a ricreare in maniera molto vivida l’atmosfera che si doveva respirare a Shanghai alla fine degli anni Trenta del Novecento, portando il lettore dentro quel crogiolo confuso di razze e culture, crocevia di persone di origine ed estrazione sociale estremamente variegate.

It's unfair that some first class Austrian authors are underrated or not known as well in the world as French, English and American ones. The genre of Shanghai '37 is close to the genre of Stefan Zweig's historical dramatization, with the difference that Baum's characters are fictitious. But there was something in the air in 1930s-1940s in the Austrian literature, so fond of historical novels. In the first part of the book, I saw a similar style of narration as in Zweig's "The world of yesterday" - where a sentence encapsulates a character's story at the backdrop of historical, geo-political and cultural changes in the world. You live through these teutonic changes through the lies of the main 9 characters in the first part of Shanghai '37.
Unfortunatley, the second part became much slower and less informatinve, but more just desciptive. However, the ending turned out to be very strong anyway.
I am also stunned, how similar the events and attitudes are in 1937, as now in the russia's war on Ukraine. Propaganda, confusion, military tactics, people's division, deaths of the innocents - almost nothing changed in 80 years. Which is a tragedy. Do we ever learn?

Über die letzten Jahre bin ich zu einem kleinen Fan der in meinen Augen völlig zu Unrecht vergessenen Autorin Vicki Baum geworden. Nach "Vor Rehen wird gewarnt" und "Menschen im Hotel" war dies mein drittes Buch aus der Feder der Autorin und wie immer habe ich die Vielschichtigkeit, mit der die Charaktere und Geschehnisse über die Länge des Buches hinweg dargestellt wurden, genossen.

Ich muss gestehen, dass ich mir sehr viel Zeit genommen habe, einerseits ist das Buch mit fast 800 Seiten keine schnelle Lektüre, zumal ich mir auch bei aller Liebe zur Detailtreue eine etwas kürzere Version gewünscht hätte.

Zum Inhalt:

In der ersten Hälfte des Buches wird eine Reihe Charaktere vorgestellt - jedem Einzelnen wird dabei ein größeres Kapitel gewidmet, so dass ich das Gefühl hatte, mehrere kleine Bücher gelesen zu haben, noch bevor ich auf der Hälfte des Buches angekommen war. Dann beginnt das Aufeinandertreffen der Charaktere, in dessen Mittelpunkt das "Hotel Shanghai" steht.

Fazit:

Ich habe das Buch wirklich gerne gelesen, muss aber wie schon erwähnt einen Punkt abziehen, da es mir einfach zu langatmig war.

Se nos relatan las vidas de las nueve personas que murieron en el Hotel Shangai, tras el bombardeo de 1937, y que se entremezclaran entre ellas , pobres y ricos, chinos y japoneses, americanos e ingleses, socialistas y capitalistas, felices e infelices. Igualmente la parca se los lleva sin hacer distinciones.
Nos da a conocer la figura del coolie, trabajadores pobres, explotados, la inmundicia humana, lo mas bajo que se puede llegara ser; Y los problemas del opio en la sociedad China, creando auténticos zombis.
Interesante su lectura.

Fascinating book, describing the lives of very different people and cultures in rich detail. Shedding light on a war and country that is rarely mentioned in history lessons in Europe. The first part of the book was a bit much but the second part totally made up for it.
