WARNING: GIFS ahoy and SPOILERS

I think I've reached the bottom of the barrel with this one. Room to Breathe is BAD. Just the worst. It makes fanny packs and the Macarena look amazing in comparison. Worst book I've ever read? Probably. Some things just shouldn't be on sale for people to read. Was this edited? I don't fucking know. It doesn't LOOK edited, but maybe it was EVEN WORSE before the editors got to it.

FOR SALE. For PEOPLE to READ.

Things like this:

The truth is the only thing keeping me from walking out the door right now is the thought of not seeing him every day breaks my heart. It has been such a short amount of time that we have spent together but it has been some of the best times I have had in years. I want him. I want to be his and him to be mine.

And this:

It is over all feminine and what I would have expected to find in an English country manor. There is a dressing table and chair opposite the bed. Also a small table and high back chair with a lamp. There is a door, that is closed, that assume leads to a bathroom.

And, fuck my eyes, this:

"Your ass was made for spanking honey," he says as he smacks the other side.

Commas are really funny that way. You see, they have to be used for a lot of sentences to make sense. When they are misused, or not used at all, we all end up with with mental images of people spanking honey with asses. If you didn't have that mental image until I mentioned it, I REGRET NOTHING.

But the story. Holy balls, you guys, THE STORY. It is an incomprehensible mindfuck of epic proportions. The story in Room to Breathe goes from bad to worse and keeps growing like a malignant tumor of SUCK. Reading it from the perspective of a narrator who is so shallow that her brain is an abandoned pool of matter in a wading tub somewhere did not benefit the experience.

Meet Cora Allen!
I've affectionately dubbed her Cora Sue, and she's a real peach, this one.

"I pause for just a moment in the door way. "If you change your mind, you know where to find me." I smile over my shoulder and give my ass a smack. I giggle and head out of the room.

She's a little nobody from America, living in England for an undetermined amount of time and depending on the generosity of her English relatives. Cora Sue has no schooling, no ambitions, no friends. Naturally, she's the speshulest little snowflake to ever flutter out of the snowflake factory. When pressed to describe what she really wants to do with her life, Cora Sue squeaks out something generic about "traveling" and helping bring the water to people without water, despite have no experience or knowledge about bringing water to people without water, and that's supposed to make us think Cora Sue is a good person.

SHE IS NOT A GOOD PERSON.

But holy bananas, that woman has some wet panties for the hero.

Meet Lord Eric Ashford!
I've affectionately dubbed him Pimp!Jesus. This will make more sense later. He's a real English gentleman.

"Me telling you that I want to 'fuck the hell out of you' isn't vulgar because it is just true. But if I were to say about ninety percent of the things that came out of her mouth in front of you it would just be wrong."

Sexist AND hypocritical. My favorite kind. Pimp!Jesus is described as a an English "Lord" throughout the story. Yes, the "L" is capitalized in the text. No, that is not the correct way to write it, unless it's being used as part of the proper name. Therefore, when Cora talks about "that Lord at the pub" or whatever, I immediately think of Jesus. And boy, did I have a lot of fun with that. So Pimp!Jesus is the lord of something, I guess. He's a member of the House of Lords, so he has to have a title. But nope. Just Lord Eric Ashford. Whether he's an earl or viscount or baron, WE'LL NEVER KNOW.

I read a lot of Regency Romance. That omission drove me BATTY.

So, Cora Sue meets Pimp!Jesus when he nearly runs her over while DRIVING DRUNK. This story should have ended here with her gruesome death his arrest, but I will never be that lucky. Anyway, she thinks he's a sexy penis, panties dampen, blah blah blah. Then it cuts to third-person present, so it read like I was watching a History Channel documentary, and Eric's all turned on by her mouth and blah blah blah.

They go on a date and abuse an Aston Martin by fooling around on it. Cora Sue is smitten, but she acts all cool when Pimp!Jesus is like, "I just fuck ladies for fun. I have dead wife baggage. Don't get clingy." And I figured that the story would go in the direction of Cora Sue teaching Pimp!Jesus to love again or whatever, but no. NO THAT IS NOT WHAT HAPPENS. Yes, Cora Sue does get clingy, but that is only a tiny fraction of the WHA-TO-THE-WHUT in this story.

Pimp!Jesus has a big, dark, and terrible secret.

That secret is that he is a pimp.

I'll wait until you stop laughing.

To be fair, he says he isn't a pimp, and after he recruits Cora Sue, she says that she isn't a prostitute. In Pimp!Jesus' estimation, he's just a nice guys who wants to hook wealthy men and women up with "charges" who they probably/most likely/definitely have sex with, even though they don't PAY for the SEX. The charges are just like assistants who dress up in expensive clothes he buys for them and wine and dine with the friends his status brings them. Sure, their very JOB is to be at the beck and call of another human being, who's allowed to be bossy because he/she is rich, but that's not weird in any way, he says. It's an honest business, he says. Nothing shady at all. He's just a matchmaker who's only in it to protect mistresses from - I don't know - being thrown back out on the street after their benefactors are done with them.

Whatevs.

The point is that I have eyes and more logic than this book, and Pimp!Jesus is definitely running a prostitution ring, even if he doesn't know it.

So he recruits Cora Sue to his incredibly legal business as a "charge," and she's totally down with it because doing this will help her achieve her "dreams" of traveling, wearing expensive name brands, and maybe helping villages without water get water in vague water terms because research is NOT this book's strong suit. Cora Sue's cousin, her only relative in the country, tells her that she can't tolerate her becoming a whore. And Cora Sue thinks her cousin's being a judgmental bitch. And her cousin's like, "If you do this stupid thing, never come back again!"

As can be expected, we never see Cora Sue's cousin again.

All that Cora Sue has left in England is Pimp!Jesus, because it's apparently really hard to make friend in 18 months(?), and he's more than willing to tell her how hot/beautiful/different/fun/gorgeous/sexy she is at every opportunity. There's nothing I hate more than reading about a hero complimenting a self-insert Sue for a whole story, so thank Pimp!Jesus for Lucinda, the fucking best.

Lucinda, another of Pimp!Jesus' wards, hates Cora Sue at first sight. The author writes Lucinda as this unbelievably mean villain, the kind that you wouldn't buy as actually existing in a million years. She calls Cora Sue fat right after they're introduced. Who says that to a stranger? LUCINDA DOES because she cannot possibly exist, but her presence in the story gave me laughs for days. Of course, Cora Sue "sets down" Lucinda right away with the typical "UR JUST JELLUS!" arguments that make me heart aflutter. It's adorable.

Cora Sue and Pimp!Jesus start fucking, and it's boring and the same every time. Naturally, Cora Sue attaches herself to the object of her affection like mold on a two-week old tuna salad, and she doesn't even try to be secretive about it. Therefore, EVERY STUPID PERSON at Pimp!Jesus' stupid estate knows that they're fucking.

At one point, Pimp!Jesus spanks Cora Sue with a hairbrush. My sex drive has yet to return.

The story starts to perk up when Cora Sue walks into Pimp Jesus' office and sees that he's about to have a threesome with Fabulously Evil Lucinda and Dumb As Rocks Claire. And Cora's like this:

 photo ohnoes1_zps0fbbbc75.gif

And she flails away to have a panic attack outside, in the freezing cold, IN HER SWIMSUIT. Now you're shaking your head trying to figure out why Cora Sue would be outside in the freezing cold in her swimsuit, and that's because she's a bloody idiot and wanted to coax Pimp!Jesus out of his office for a swim so they could take part in some more loving sexitudes or whatever. Why she doesn't wear a cover-up around the FANCY ENGLISH MANOR with OTHER PEOPLE IN THE HOUSE remains a mystery.

So Cora Sue almost freezes to death outside, but Pimp!Jesus saves her from her pathetic panic attack. Sadly, he WASN'T having a threesome with Lucinda and Claire. They were attacking him with their feminine wiles, and he had to fight them off because there's only ONE vagina for him, and it unfortunately belongs to Cora Sue.

The story's big event is a gala at Pimp!Jesus' estate in which he shows off his charges to the highest bidders. Cora Sue is all nervous because she doesn't know all the fancy dances, and that brings us this incredibly hilarious piece of dialogue:

"I don't know about the dancing part. I know how to drop it like it's hot but something tells me this isn't the kind of dancing you are talking about."

DROP IT LIKE IT'S HOT! Is it 2004 again?

Cora Sue, you see, is a pinnacle of class. I mean, check out what she wears to fancy dinners on fancy English estates with fancy people attending:

I am wearing a short strapless hot pink dress that is flowy from just under my breast to about mid-thigh. The top part around my breasts is covered in crystals.

So classy.

Because they suck, Cora Sue and Pimp!Jesus start walking circles around each other and having self-created issues. Cora Sue attracts a Daddy Warbucks for her gold-digging ways, and there are drawn-out scenes of her waiting for Pimp!Jesus to pledge his undying love and tell her to stay. At the same time, Pimp!Jesus wants her to stay but decides that she wants to go to Japan with a Scottish guy because that will make the plot drag on forever.

At no point do these people TALK to each other about this or actually DO what they want to do. Because they are idiots.

Cora Sue leaves to many sad monologues and dreary days, and Pimp!Jesus decides he must tell her that he loves her. So he follows her to London and tells her that he loves her. And I'm thinking, FINALLY this book will fucking end. But Cora Sue is the devil, so she's like, "YOU DO NOT LOVE ME! YOU SENT ME AWAY! NEVER TELL ME YOU LOVE ME BECAUSE YOU LIE!" Apparently, girlfriends can just be "sent away" to Japan like rich people send their kids to boarding school?

And Pimp!Jesus is like, "But I DO love you."

But of course that doesn't matter because I had to suffer more.

After Cora Sue's departure date for Japan, Pimp!Jesus is all sad, and his faithful assistant comes into his office with joyful "bad news":

A TSUNAMI HIT JAPAN AND WIPED OUT LARGE PARTS OF THE COUNTRY!

My first reaction was one of shock. What an insensitive thing to do to poor Japan in a fictional romance. My second reaction was one of elation. Cora Sue was finally gone!

But then she wasn't, because she never went to Japan.

 photo rage-cat-l_zps2a99de7b.png

Cora Sue reveals that she didn't go to Japan because Fabulously Evil Lucinda trapped her in a wine cellar and went in her place. And now Lucinda is dead.

This book is the antidote to happiness.

C'est fin.

Cora, an American girl living and working in a sleepy English village is nearly mowed down by Lord Eric Ashcroft in his Jag. After making sure she is OK and bringing her down from a panic attack he vows that he is going to see her again and begins to pursue her in earnest.

He is filthy rich – he owns a Jag, a Land Rover AND an Aston Martin plus he is also the proud owner of a Victorian Manor in the English Countryside, amongst other properties. He’s a widower and is seriously not looking for commitment or a girlfriend but likes what he sees when he looks at Cora and he has a proposition for her. It’s not something that’s going to ingratiate him with Cora’s friends and relatives but, after some careful thought, Cora decides to go for it. I have to say that I thought the deals that Eric comes up with for his ‘charges’ and ‘benefactors’ were rather shady and I can’t wait to see everyone’s reactions to this but I do applaud Nicole Brightman for trying to do something a little different.

Eric is a sexy as fuck, dressed down, English lord – dripping in money and attitude and sexy as all get out!! He’s actually full of English charm and is fairly self-deprecating but, get him in a bedroom, and he revs up into a different gear and, when Cora finally succumbs, they light up the pages with their steam

Cora is a bit of a sweetie – she’s given up everything to help nurse her Aunt in England during her last days and now is a little lost and floundering – not really sure what to do next with her life. She’s stayed in England and isn’t really looking for love but, after Eric nearly turns her into roadkill, she finds herself falling for his easy charm and is unsure what the future holds for them together as that contract hangs like a looming presence over her head.

This book is fully of some truly outrageous British secondary characters that really seem to have jumped straight out of a Jilly Cooper novel - they’re a lot of fun, most especially the deliciously wicked Tristan. There’s a few unexpected twists and turns in this one and a couple of unfinished storylines in the background to take us into a second novel, although this one works as a stand alone and is a complete story in itself.

It’s very romantic, very sexy and is a quick, light and easy read.

Bordering between 1 and 2 stars - let's say 1 and a half.

What the heck have I just read? This was like no other book in the erotic romance genre and I am totally confused on how to review it.

One part of me really liked the story - so that's good yes?

The biggest part of me though HATED the lead characters! I was so FRUSTRATED with them and their personalities or lack thereof. For want of a better description it's very ' oh Romeo, oh Romeo, where for art thou Romeo and then 'I am going to f*ck you all night'..............

Why? Why were the characters so differential? What springs to my mind is think Jane Austen with turrets. I know right!! This book contained a whole pile and I mean a steamy great hulk of completely unwanted lovey/dovey, hoity/toity, prim/proper text and then you'll get an erotic sex scene, but the conversations as well between them all seemed so false and 'fill ins' not substantial at all so you could feel you could get you teeth into the book.

I think I understand what the author was trying to do by ooh it's fell short, all I could imagine was wooden puppets and stilted speech and oh so friggin prim and flowery from HIS mouth as well as hers.

It was like trying to fit the proverbial square peg into a round whole, their characters just didn't fit and they didn't seem real, which I was so cross about and let's face it I actually finished the whole book so it wasn't a DNF but in all honesty I was hoping it would redeem itself at some point by sadly it didn't.

So I am admitting defeat with this book, it didn't deliver for me but for some it very well may do, but if you enjoy erotic books then I really can't see you connecting with the characters any better than me. But I can honestly say I did try, I did finish it and I honestly wanted it to deliver but for me it just didn't.

Cora is a spitfire and I like it, "I think you might want to call someone for yourself though," I say trying to maintain my calm. eff it. "What in the eff do you think you are doing driving? You could have killed me or yourself. If you don't care about your own safety you could at least try to be considerate of other people. I am pretty sure that whatever your reason is for getting behind that wheel it isn't worth my life." Wow nothing says sorry then red roses, and great note you had go with it Eric you boob! "Sorry I almost killed you with my car, Eric" Seriously was that the best you got? He does get my panties in a tizzy though, "he growls in his velvety British voice, "It's just a effing car." Good lord I love Eric, "thank god! Your a** was made for spanking honey." Eric knows what to say to a girl, "Honey, trust me when I tell you that if I am not effing you, I am thinking about effing you. I have wanted to be inside you every minute of every day since the first night I met you. I just feel like I can't get enough of you." I would be upset as well Cora, "well clearly not beautiful enough for you to acknowledge in front of your friends." I'm really not sure how I like Eric treating her this way, but then Eric being Eric makes up for it with that mouth of his, "you are mine. Do you understand? Mine. Every inch of you is mine. This sweet mouth with your perfect tongue. Mine."

I dont even know where to begin but all I have to say is that for every page every second that I had to read it I wanted to claw my eyes out slowly......

It was bad like bad.

The heroine was basically a whore even though she didn't want to admit it that was the case..

The hero was ugg... To me not sexy at all...

The whole thing was a disaster and.... I'm done.

What happens when love literally knocks you flat on your ass? Well Room to Breathe answers that question for you! Room to Breathe is the debut novel for Nicole Brightman. We are introduced to Cora a young American girl who uprooted her life to move to England to help her dying aunt. Two years later and nine months after her aunt has passed Cora is finding herself at a stand still. Not sure if she wants to move back to America or continue her life in England. A bottle of whiskey and a reckless Lord Eric lands her in a near death experience but what Cora didn’t know was that night was not a chance encounter with death but a chance at life.

Oh Lord Eric! I must say that he will rank up there with you favorite book boyfriends! His kind words leave you wanting because since when do we follow the “I don’t do relationships” MO! He has it all. One: He is hot! Two: He is rich! Three: He has issues! Four: He is endearing! Five: He is a freaking LORD!! So really our poor sweet Cora never had a chance. Cora has found herself falling for Eric in this twisted turn love story. Both Eric and Cora are dealing with a past and as we know the past never stays hidden. They are both learning each others issues but working through them isn’t all that easy. Still young Cora longs for a life of travel and the chance to help others in need. She can see her dreams coming true with Eric but can he see the chance he has in front of him.

I really enjoyed this story and read Room to Breathe in one sitting. I just needed to know what would happen and at 30% in I was emailing Nicole telling her I would come find her if this didn’t go the way I wanted. Well she just laughed at me! Will I be looking for Nicole and time soon…that’s up for debate? What I will tell you is that this is defiantly a must add to your TBR list. Nicole has created a story worth reading with likable main characters. Cora youthful and sweet while Eric strong and compassionate. You will be cheering for them to find their own teenage dream.

Abby's Review 3 stars

I liked this book a lot and then I wanted to toss this one aside. It had me all torn on how I felt. There are things I love and things I did not like.

I'll go with the good first....Hot Damn! Nicole knows how to write some steam. So much so that whenever I was frustrated with the story, the hot ass scenes had me flipping the pages and kept me intrigued. Eric and Cora had some super steamy and sweet moments. It is the highlight of this read

I love when authors will have snippet of something I love in their book. In this one there was reference to Love Actually and when they fall in love in Portugal. That just makes me smile when authors do this.

This being set in England gave it a unique and romantic feel. The way the scenes were set in my imagination was a nice surprise. Heck I even want to go get a spot of Tea with a splash of milk.

Some of my frustration came from Cora. First this girl is living in England for 18 months but she has made zero friends. She quickly walked away from her cousin and I got the feeling that she did not value friendship and family that much. Have you ever watched that show, Locked Up Abroad? I felt like Cora would be the one easily convinced. There were times she was so naive and I thought this girl is going to sell her soul to the devil. I did feel that it had a pretty woman prostitution romance feel to it.

I kept going back and forth on if i liked Cora or not and if she was just naive. When I finished the book I still was not able to completely make up my mind. Perhaps it was my mood, who knows, I think this is one you will have to pick to form your own opinion

more like 2.5 stars Cora was a whining little baby that grated on my nerves how in the heck did Eric fall in love with her? it had to be the sex, because they had plenty of that . and when she finally did grow a pair I think it fell in the wrong time of the story she accused him of walking away from someone he loved when she was doing the same exact thing . the author did an awesome job at showing the maturity differences in age . I'm glad I waited for the price to drop before buying this one. I can forgive the robot talking or the non editing not a big deal I can auto correct in my own mind. there were some parts to the story that were really good too. the sex was steamy. I think the author is going to only get better and better. I'd like stronger lead females. I just can't stand a weak woman. I did feel gut wrenchingly bad for Cora though for what she witnessed and I think the author had me so emotionally vested and then just fixed it in practically one page that it turned the whole story around for me. I don't think I will be buying book 2. but would consider another book outside of the series

Received from: Nicole Brightman (in exchange for an honest review)

I had agreed to do the blog tour for FAITH TO ENDURE, so I read it first. I was very thankful that the author had generously provided ROOM TO BREATHE for those of us who had missed out on this story. I am happy to say that FAITH TO ENDURE does stand on its own, but it is a richer read if you know the back story provided in ROOM TO BREATHE.

This story has all of the magic of a modern Cinderella. Cora has caught the attention of a Lord while working as a barmaid for her cousin in a small town in England. In no time at all, he has swept her off her feet and she is head over heels in love, but is he? Can he?

I loved living in this fantasy for a while. It is every little girly-girl’s dream to be made to feel like a princess and Lord Eric Ashford knows how to make dreams come true.

I need to also mention that book cover. The model is gorgeous with just the right amount of curves.

Recommended for: 18+ due to sexual situations

Grammar/editing: ungraded – book received as an unedited ARC / errors excused

I finished neglected housework, left the kiddos to my mom and spaced out with this super wonderful book! It was a wonderful storyline that had a regency feel to it that I loved! The Lord is angsty and oh so hot! I also adored Cora's naivety and sweetness. I loved the twist with Lucinda. I am now off to stalk the author on Facebook to beg for a sequel. (I also loved the Kristen Proby shout out via a Luke nod!)

Oh Eric just loved him. Cora his beautiful American girl. I could not put this book down. Lucinda is such a witch I wanted to slap the shit out of her. Claire was a sweetie. I don't have to give anything away you just need to read this book. I was getting a little pissed at the end and think oh no Cora don't do that. But thank goodness it turned out perfect <3 Get it read it

Couldn't relate to the characters in the slightest. I truly tried to read through it, but as soon as I felt like tossing my iPad across the living room; I opted to just act like a normal being, gave it one star (only because I love the location of the story), and locked this book under the "couldn't finish" shelf ... Very disappointed.

Ehhhh...I liked the dialogue and Cora but I dunno my true feelings. Took me about 36 hours to read and I'm glad there is a HEA and all...but I just can't figure out my true feelings. Not a bad read, but I may have been expecting something a little different. Lord was hot Cora was innocently weak...but I did like the charterers and the little drama throughout the book.

It was a different storyline-which intrigued me. I admired cora's spunk and attitude. I felt that Eric was too bi polar for me...I woulda hit him at some point (but that's me). They were both stubborn and a little childish when it came to their feelings-her especially. But when push came to shove they both manned up! There no spoilers! Have a bad habit..

Holy smokes. I really really thought I really wouldn't like this. I really don't like the idea of selling yourself for "companionship" but it turned out to be great. Sexy as hell and just, very emotional. Not for the reader but for Cora. I felt her pain, and I couldn't imagine... But yay. Great book!

Intriguing story that kept me interested and wanting to know more. Personally Eric is so much hard work, he is up and down in his attitude and feelings to Cora, and so hot and cold the way he treats her. Bit of a douchbag. Cora is certainly not a strong female character but i guess that's why they both work so well together. A good read that I did enjoy

This was a great starter book Nicole! I liked that the story line was unlike any other out there currently, especially in this genre, and that makes it super unique. Your characters were feisty and I was left excited to see what might happen in the future for these two. :)

Downside.... Too short for $4. On Nook, only 157 pages. Upside, lots of steam. I didn't care for the circumstances surrounding the two main characters. I couldn't get into the story; found myself skimming a lot. Ho-hum.
