The Shadow Place brings together school violence, Instant Messaging, and the loyalty of old friends -- in a suspenseful page-turner. Lissa's neighbor and best friend, Rodney, has always been strange, but now he's buying guns over the Internet. If Rodney acts on his threats of violence, who will be the victim; his abusive father or one of his taunting classmates.
Carol Tanzman is the author of the contemporary YA novels DANCERGIRL and CIRCLE OF SILENCE, published by Harlequin Teen. Her first novel, THE SHADOW PLACE was an ALA Quick Pick book. She is an award-winning theatre director, a nationally recognized arts educator, and has been honored (twice) by the Bravo Awards. She also loves to swing dance!
DANCERGIRL and CIRCLE OF SILENCE are contemporary thrillers, part mystery and part romance. Although set in the same Brooklyn, NY high school, WiHi, the books are companion books with different main characters so that they stand-alone. They grab you from the first page and won’t let you go until their thrilling conclusions.
I think the premise of the book is good. However, the main character takes on way to much responsibility for her age. I worry that students who may be in similar situations may try and do the same. I would not recommend this book to children unless an adult is reading along side pointing out how the way the situation was handled and ended is unsafe and ill advised.
"The shadow place" by Carol M. Tanzman book based on bullying at home.It made me think bullying just doesnt happen at school but also at home. Many times when we hear the word bullying we think it means a kid being bullied at school. But bullying doesn't just happen at school it can happen in many places such as school. This just makes us open our eyes and see the reality. "The shadow place" is about a young boy named Rodney that is being bullied by his father. Recently his best friend lissa has noticed that he has been acting weird. Soon she finds out that he has been wanting to buy a gun on the internet. Lissa is scared that he might want to kill his father. She doesn't want her friend to ruin his life.Rodney has gone missing and he has been seen with a gun. Will It be too late until she finds him? During the book I could feel the pain rodney felt when his mother left without him. He has been through lots of things and he feels trap so he feels that the only way out is if he kills his own father. He is a kind of clever and could get grumpy sometimes. I thought that he was a great boy and that he is really brave to fight back his father. He is confused and he chooses the wrong path which is killing his father. When lissa final figure where Rodney is hiding, at the end of the book, I could see that rodney was really confused. He didn't want to hurt his friend lissa. He didn't know whether or not killing his father would end things. He wanted his dad to stop bullying him. All he thought was about killing his father but really he wasn't sure about what to do.Now he knew that he was making the wrong choice and that there is people who care about him. I think this is important to us because it is about a huge topic which is bullying. Bullying is happening in many houses and school today in society. This book shows us about what bullying can cause. Not only does bullying cause the person that is bullys suicide but can also cause the person to kill the person that bullies him. This shows us that bullying isn't a little problem that only affect one person but it affects many people. I think Carol M. Tanzman wrote an excellent book. This book was great but there were some negative things about it. For example how short it was,how fast it went and the ending.I think Carol should’ve have written more.I think she should've made some more conflicts than just one whole big one. When I was reading the book I saw that the book was going to fast. I did understand what was going on but I wished the author would have explained more thoroughly. There were some excellent parts in the book that made me full of suspense. This made me keep on reading! When I read the last sentence I was surprised. I think the author should of wrote a little more. But maybe she did it on purpose so us the readers would make up an ending by ourselves.I really liked the characters. I also hated some of the characters, for example lisa's friends were being really mean to rodney. Also lisa's aunt, I think she should of told lisa's parents about lisa's secret crush. I would recommend this book even though I didn't like a couple things about how it was written. This was the second book I read from Carol M. Tanzman. This book made you feel really suspenseful. So if you want to try this book I am going to warn you that this book is really hard to put down.
I read the book The Shadow Place. If you like mysteries then this book is for you. There are foreshadowing points that aren't very obvious. It is mysteries, funny, and serious at times.
This book gives a child perspective of what being bullied really means. It also gives a story that you should be who you want and not let people tell you who to be. Love your friends equal. Getting new friends doesn't mean putting out the old.
This book is great for children who loves mysteries and loves a great lesson to learn
This is a nice little book that explores bullying-At home and at school. For all the news about bullying there is still a lot of it going on. I suppose it will always be an issure. Recommended for 5th grade on up. It is about some eigth graders,
The book "Shadow Place " is a okay book overall .I'm not personal interested in it but it grab my attention enough that I kept reading it.So,basically the book is a teenage a boy who have been mistreated or abusive my his dad which caused him to be acting out on his friends and in school. And it then turns to a point where he couldn't take it anymore and try to do something about it in a violence approach .
