Dragon Brides #4

Midnight Ruin

Rate this book
After fleeing the Black Estate and the man that broke her heart, Elsie finds herself in the crosshairs of religious fanatics. They’re fed up with greedy Kings and corrupt courts, and they want retribution.

The wicked must be punished.

A smart woman would leave when she’s given the chance, but escaping would mean leaving her little sister behind—again.

Conflict becomes chaos and Elsie is trapped. Doomed by the terrible sacrifice she made for her family ten years earlier. There is blood on her hands and the devout believe there is only one way to cleanse such evil.

Fire.

But Elsie is no stranger to fire. She’s spent the last ten years burning internally, devoured by the flames of a love she believed to be unrequited.

Then he appears like a demon in the night. Eoin Black, soldier, dragon shifter, and master of her heart. The only question is, will he be her salvation or her destruction?

The amount of guilt those two had that hindered their story almost chocked me as a reader

I’m actually so sad this book is over. I didn’t expect to like it so much, and I’m so happy I read it. The plot is gold, the characters have depth. Moira Kane is an amazing writer. 🌶️🌶️/5

Yet another man that thinks he's too broken to be with the woman he needs, AND yet another book whether love (and fated mates) fixes everything.
Eoin sucks a lot for lying to Elsie for 10 years. Elsie sucks a little for not figuring out she's his mate before ten years. Like, it was obvious to everyone else. Plots there was really no romance and no coming together as a team for them. They just mashed together like torches thrown into a barn and then blam they're a couple?

Elsie and Eoin

To be honest, I am a bit disappointed with the story. To have waited 10 years for a man only for him to reject you left and right would be devastating. But to have Elsie understand and show almost no anger towards him was....disappointed. There was no grovelling at all...there was barely any romance between the two of them.

⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 because GR still doesn't let me do halves and I'm salty about it.

If you're craving a deeper dive into the dragon world with a slow-burn romance, angsty banter, and political intrigue, this one's for you.

We're back in the world of the Dragon Brides series, and this one might just be my favorite so far. Midnight Ruin picks up with characters from Black Heart, but this time the spotlight is on Elsie, the housekeeper with hidden depths, and Eoin Black, one of the elusive Balck brothers.

What really made this book stand out for me was how much more we got; more lore, more worldbuilding, more political undercurrents, more dragons doing dragon things, and most importantly, more character depth. While we've grown accustomed to the fated mates trope and the dragonshifter mechanics by now, this one adds layers that were missing in earlier books.

Elsie completely surprised me. The amount of backstory and emotional complexity we get from her made me immediately invested. Eoin, on the other hand, gets a bit less spotlight in that regard, but their angsty banter and sizzling tension carry the story nicely. Admittedly, the back-and-forth did start to feel a little repetitive towards the middle, but the action-packed plot and introduction of new characters kept things moving.

Is it a reread? Still no.
But is it the best in the series so far? Absolutely.
Would I like more of this world, and maybe more Black brothers doing morally gray things? Also yes.

⭐️⭐️this whole series is a must read⭐️⭐️

I was waiting very patiently for Elsie and Eoins story . It was worth the wait . I absolutely love the dynamic between the two , it was the constant tug of war of who would win the battle of wills and who harbored the most hidden affections that just kept me turning the page . Some of my favorite highlights:

“I’m hurting you—”

“Nothing hurt more than longing for you every day and believing my love was unrequited.”

“Do you truly not desire me?”

“I could walk a thousand miles in the Gazari desert and still I would desire you more than water.”

A bit on the dark side of the book- it enters a distopian county and such things happen that make you feel impotent.

Elsie’s story ends good but it sure costs her a lot to get to that part.

another one-and-done, but cute enough, although the yearning turned self-punishment was just slightly too much
