The book of Matthew paints a powerful portrait of Jesus as Israel’s long-awaited Messiah, the one who would bring God’s kingdom to earth and fulfill his promises to his people. Leading readers through this hope-filled book, this guide explains the biblical text with clarity and passion—inviting us to encounter God’s one and only Son: Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. Drew Hunter (MA, Wheaton College) is a teaching pastor at Zionsville Fellowship in Zionsville, Indiana. Previously he served as a minister for young adults at Grace Church of DuPage and taught religious studies at College of DuPage. Hunter is the author of Isaiah: A 12 Week Study and Matthew: A 12 Week Study. He and his wife, Christina, have three young boys.
There’s nothing objectionable here, but I just can’t give this any more than an okay rating because the teaching portions are just too skeletal. There’s way too much white space on these pages. Perhaps it’s my fault for mistaking a “study” for a commentary.
I would give this one a 3.75 stars. It was good but I was disappointed in how fast it flew through Matthew and we didn’t get to really study or spend much time on various aspects of Matthew. 12 weeks seemed too short of time for all the stuff jam packed in Matthew. What we did get to unpack was good, but I wished it was more. Also, these studies have a habit of asking 12 questions rolled into one and it’s really hard to answer all those in one answer.
I've done two studies in this series and both have done a tremendous job of making connections to the Old testament and asking thought-provoking questions. I've read Matthew a number of times, but I still learned a lot going through this booklet. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a deeper understanding of the Gospel.
