For the Australian academic and mystery writer, see Professor Jane R. Goodall.
Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace was a world-renowned ethologist and activist inspiring greater understanding and action on behalf of the natural world every single day.
Dr. Goodall was best known for groundbreaking studies of wild chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania, transformative research that continues to this day as the longest-running wild chimpanzee study in the world. Dr. Goodall was the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, a global conservation, advocacy, animal welfare, research, and youth empowerment organization, including her global Roots & Shoots program.
Dr. Goodall had worked extensively on climate action, human rights, conservation, and animal welfare issues for decades, and was a central voice in the work to advance environmental progress.
I landed a copy of this at the thrift store last month. For $1. Oh my gosh what a find. Beautiful photos. I have admired Jane forever. I’m so thankful to have this beautiful hardback which is in excellent condition. I will look at it over and over. Highly recommended!
A commemorative piece on the work that world-famous primatologist/anthropologist Jane Goodall has performed over the (as of 2010) five decades of her remarkable career. It’s a very easy read and lavishly decorated with high definition images throughout her years at Gombe Stream National Park off of Tanzania’s Lake Tanganyika. Using many passages that feature snippets of Dr. Goodall’s previous publications, this book serves as a good primer for her life of dedication to chimpanzees and wilderness conservation.
Beginning with the humble beginnings of her now treasured research into chimpanzee and other primate behavior in 1960, the book follows her breakthrough observations (tool use, chimpanzee warfare, child rearing) against the politically unstable backdrop of Eastern Africa in the late 1900s. Leaving the park to focus on the Jane Goodall Institute in the mid-80s, Dr. Goodall’s aim becomes international as her conservation efforts are coupled with community education and anti-poverty initiatives in the form of the TACARE program, in addition to ChimpanZoo, the largest captive ape research program in the world, and Root and Shoots, a youth focused stewardship effort that addresses regional issues.
I knew picking this book up that it would be a tearjerker because I am an animal lover, and it certainly did pull on my heartstrings and choke me up a few times. I am moved by the work of JGI and TACARE as much as I am amazed by the intellect and familial culture of the chimpanzees that Dr. Goodall has had the privilege of getting close to. Highly recommended for those unfamiliar with the specifics of her work, I’ve been left wanting more and to see what has been going on with the Jane Goodall Institute in the 11 years since this was published.
A great collection of photos and narratives describing Jane Goodall's experience with chimpanzees. It was most interesting to learn that her initial research was almost halted as the British government did not want to send a single women into the wild... she ended up taking her mother with her! Jane discovered chimpanzees would use tools, the social dynamics of the groups and gained their trust before she began her worldwide speaking engagements to encourage others to work towards conservation. This book makes a reader want to know more about Jane Goodall and makes me regret missing the speaking engagement in my own city!
Jane Goodall'ın hayatı ve çalışmalarını anlatan çok güzel resimlerle dolu bir kitap. Bir Jane Goodall hayranı olarak ben çok beğendim, tavsiye ederim..
I'd like to give this book 3.5 stars. Here's what I liked: great intro into the story of JG's work, quick read, subject matter very approachable. Awesome photos! Here's what I missed out on: the second half of the book goes into her conservation efforts, and though very important, I was more interested in hearing about her time in the field. About two uses of the phrase "pristine forest" into the second half and I started tuning out. That phrase is overused in conservation writing and has lost it's impact. Not much of the book was told directly in her in voice--the use of quotes from her other writings were abundant. It was hard to feel as though she had any direct authorship in this book. I would have loved to hear her story told in her voice, and for that I'll need to read one of her other books. I'm open to recommendations....
A great introduction to Goodall and the Chimpanzees. This book offered an overall snapshot of events and initiatives regarding conservation efforts, chimp life, and the plight (and hope) of the chimpanzee. This would be the perfect book, rich with photographs, to take young adults from just being interested in chimps to being passionate about them. 4 stars only because it could have been longer based in the vast information available.
I’ve admired Jane Goodall since I was in elementary school. This is a wonderful overview of her life’s work - studying chimpanzee behavior, society, and habitat. Working to preserve the habitat of chimpanzees. Working to instill new attitudes against hunting chimps for food, and selling their babies as pets. Educating children about chimps, animals in general and their habitats. And finally, working to abolish chimps as lab animals. Several European nations now have prohibited using chimps as lab animals; the United States has not.
Not always an easy read due to the way chimps have suffered at the hands of humans. But I very much enjoyed reading about the early days of Jane’s field work, her discoveries, and her relationships with those early chimps. The photos are beautiful.
This book is an updated version of ‘40 Years at Gombe’. It is in some respects analogous to a ‘greatest hits’ compilation, drawing on content from Dr Jane Goodall’s earlier works, and felt a wee bit disjointed as a whole. Nonetheless, it is a great overview of/introduction to Goodall’s distinguished career up until 2010 and includes lots of great photos and interesting facts about chimpanzees. While a few of these photos are heartbreaking, they serve to highlight the plight of chimpanzees in the wild that has motivated Goodall’s global conservation activism. The book does end on a positive note, however, as Goodall discusses her reasons for holding onto hope for a better future for chimpanzees and the planet.
This book is about the get to know of Jane Goodall and her works with Chimpanzees at Gombe (Tanzania) and later around the world - documented for 50 years! I learn many things here about the Chimpanzees 🤍
The book will be suitable for: 1. Parents - will be fun to teach about the works by Jane Goodall and her team and all the facts which has been discovered about the chimpanzees so far to the kids. This book contains a lot of photographs of Chimpanzees, so it will be a great material for discussion with the kids. 2. People who has interest with animals, environment and volunteering in this related field.
Consist of 275 pages, the book can be finished in one sitting time.
Personally, I would recommend that you read In the Shadow of Man before reading 50 Years at Gombe. Mostly because it gives a much more in-depth insight into Goodall's first experiences in Gombe. Which, then gives you so much more of a base from which to understand this wonderful 50th anniversary insight into Jane's work.
This novel is a great overlook at all of the ground-breaking work that has occurred at Gombe over the years. It's filled with images and snapshots into the many different aspects of not only life at Gombe, but Goodall's life and her j fluency throughout the world.
I've always admired people like Jane and wished that I could accomplish what they have. But, for a long time, I didn't actually understand the sacrifices that have to be made for this to happen. Goodall spends approximately 3 weeks a year at her home. She is amazing and so important to the survival of earth, but I can't imagine the sacrifice that that would be.
I loved revisiting the world of Jane Goodall and Gombe, it's reminded me that I want to dive into more of her books. And even watch the documentary about this phenomenal woman's life and contributions not only to science, but the way we move through the world.
Such a great book on a remarkable woman! Loved hearing about Jane's passion and how she's using her popularity to make a real change in the lives of all creatures living in Gombe. There was so much I didn't know and understand before I read this book, but now that my eyes have been opened there's no way I can shut them again. Thank you Jane for inspiring me to do more good in the world.
Inspires me to want to read and learn more about Jane Goodall and her work. The big picture is covered, of course, in this book but this book is fairly short. There is text, a timeline, and other information, including a book list. There are also marvelous photographs peppered throughout the book. I think I might also enjoy watching the films mentioned.
Jane Goodall is an international treasure. In her 90 years of life she has accomplished so much for this world. The environmental measures she and the organizations she has started have done more for this planet, and the people and animals that share it than anyone else today. I absolutely LOVE her!
After reading the book about Hope, I had to learn more about Jane Goodall and this book is the perfect follow up detailing all she has done until the 2010s in a succinct and lovely manner. She is my hero.
Jane Goodall will forever be one of the strongest inspirations that lead my down my wildlife studies pathway, a seriously determined, courageous, and dedicated woman who had a dream and made it a reality. I can only dream to be merely half as impactful as she.
In my opinion, the BEST non-fiction allows one to live vicariously through the good works of others. And who better to emulate than Jane Goodall? This book contains FABULOUS pictures, personal stories (both human and chimpanzee), history, and facts. The conservation parts, although quite important, do not seem preachy or unobtainable. Who wants to go to the zoo? . ? . ?
A large format book with (many great pictures) about Jane Goodall’s work with the chimpanzees of Gombe over the last 50 years. The book also talks about all that Dr. Goodall has done to make the world in general a better place. Jane Goodall is an inspiration!
Informative book with plenty of color pictures. I bought this for my 17 yr old nephew who is interested in zoology and he loved it. This book would be a great intro into dr jane's work and conservation. And perfect for a young adult who may get bogged down by one of her paperbacks.
Scientist or Mystic... whatever we call her she if far beyond her time... some people cannot be wrapped-up in words...as they defy the conventional limitations... Jane - Your name is engraved in the hearts of those who wish to coexist.
A gorgeous and moving book with beautiful photography and flawless writing that draws the reader deep into the world of Jane Goodall and her life with the chimps and beyond. Definitely highly recommended.
Overall this book was very informal. There is not much to say besides the fact that I learned a lot about Jane Goodall and a lot about chimpanzees. Good read!!
I love Jane's passion and love the work she's done. This book is beautifully done and she allows you to live through her even if only a moment. Thank you Jane!
