September 1297. David and his family and friends have come to Carew Castle in Wales to participate in a tournament in the spirit of King Arthur. Two years have passed since the events in Hidden in Time. Questions remain not only as to the whereabouts of the traitor, Bogo de Clare, who is still at large, but the relationship of David's family with Avalon.
Can they still time travel?
And, even if they can, would it be better if they didn't?
Join David and his friends and family for the next installment in the After Cilmeri series!

With over a million books sold to date, Sarah Woodbury is the author of more than forty novels, all set in medieval Wales. Although an anthropologist by training, and then a full-time homeschooling mom for twenty years, she began writing fiction when the stories in her head overflowed and demanded that she let them out. While her ancestry is Welsh, she only visited Wales for the first time at university. She has been in love with the country, language, and people ever since. She even convinced her husband to give all four of their children Welsh names.
Sarah is a member of the Historical Authors Fiction Cooperative (HFAC), the Historical Novel Society, and Novelists, Inc. (NINC).
Was quite hard to get into the book, I would have appreciated more of a summary than a list of characters. The list was too long, as there are too many people to keep track of.
The two storylines were interesting and kept me entertained, especially when I had read the first 25% of the book.
The big bads of this book were a VERY big surprise. I guess I missed that part of my history lessons... it very much feels inaccurate. (And yes I am saying this for a fantasy novel, but as the author makes sure a lot is accurate, I feel as if I am allowed to mention this.)
"...this was Earth Two, where things were still done the right way." All our favorite characters are back for a new adventure with plenty of peril and intrigue. David is still one of my most loved characters of all time because of his integrity. In a world full of morally gray characters, he's a breath of fresh air. He does have some flaws, but Lili reigns him in admirably. A devoted, happily married couple is a joy to read about.
I loved the way the two storylines intersected. Though many independent pieces fall into place as if orchestrated by a higher power, free will is still present. Each individual makes their own choices and lives with the consequences. I like seeing people like George grow and change. "The world, and circumstance, were often what you made them."
As a native Oregonian, I appreciated the references to the Pendelton Roundup and the Confederated Tribes. As a former grocery store employee, I may have teared up at the use of the term “checker”--one I have not heard used in that context since moving out of state. This series is so expansive, and Woodbury does an amazing job incorporating so many cultures and viewpoints into her stories. And so many obscure but intriguing historical tidbits. In the way David approaches people, we see one of the main themes of the series: “I’m not in favor of more control, that’s for sure. But freedom can’t be about every splinter group carving out a little piece of land for itself and excluding everyone else... It needs to be about working together, as equals, moving towards a better world."
I enjoyed being reunited with David, Meg, Lilli, Anna and the rest of the family and close friends. I wanted more personal interactions with all family members. I was looking forward to having David and his entire family in one place and together at least for part of the book. But, again there was no substantial interaction between the family and close friends (except bits and pieces about the Earth Two political mystery). Although I thought the bedroom scene between Meg and Llewelyn was heartwarming (I would have liked more scenes like that).
The Avalon storyline was good except we still just get the travelers being chased from one place to another by various agencies. I wanted more of a story involving the characters. There is no real plot. There are no substantial interactions or connections. Nothing moving the story forward (in that part of the world or in relation in the alternate world). We have them being chased from here to there until they do something to return to medieval times again. In the earlier books we got more of the Earth Two travelers getting to experience more of the modern world and it’s amenities. The reader experienced it along with them. Not so much lately.
When David and Lillie make it back after being gone and with Meg (and other members of the family) being so worried. It was strange to not have any interaction between mother and son on his return. It’s little things like that that were missing for me.
Overall, I enjoyed both storylines. I am invested in the characters and this amazing world the author has created.
I loved seeing Sarah link our rodeos of today with the tournaments that were popular in Cilmeri. Both contests that came out of what people did within the context of their lives, showing us people are much the same now as then.
As the storyline changed from Earth 2 (yr 1297) Avalon (yr 2025) Sarah kept the modern world in touch with our current world with a light hand, keeping us grounded while letting us soar with the possibilities. All of this while not giving anyone’s political or religious views the least mention or insult; a tight line very few have been able balance.
To say that our author, Sarah Woodbury has raised David Llewelyn very well throughout the entire series of 21 books you won’t want to lay down, is such an understatement.
Should the series ever end, you’ll want to keep this set to read again frequently.
Although I enjoyed this book, I gave it 4 stars (would have given 4-1/2 stars if available) because of the jumping around of characters within the story. I know this is necessary; but, it made it hard to keep up with what was going on in each part of the story from chapter to chapter. Using a Kindle reader, I could not flip back and forth to regain the summary of the previous chapter or go to the beginning to look up who each character was.
Having said this, the story was excellent and I read it very quickly (probably too quickly to absorb all the details!). I will, more than likely, go back and re-read the book again. I wonder if, when and what the next book will be about! Keep on writing Ms. Woodbury!
P.S. I really enjoy your videos you and your husband put out on YouTube. Keep those coming also!!
I intended to make this book last; we waited for it for a year and half and I can only imagine how much work goes into each book. Sarah does a wonderful job with character development. Well worth the wait but I really wish that there were already ten more books waiting for me. I’ve been reading this series for 11 years and wish I knew how it was going to end. As a side note EVERYTIME I see Bogo’s name I think “buy one get one free”. Thanks for over a decade of enjoyment !
Wow, what a wonderful addition to this fantastic series.
Sarah Woodbury has given us another amazing book in her After Cilmeri series. I’ve read all of the books in this series and wonder how it is that she keeps building on this story in such a captivating way. Yes, I am captivated by all the characters and the storyline. And I’m excited to see the direction we go from here! Highly recommend!
I really enjoy how Sarah Woodbury takes existing characters and adds to them, making them into people that I feel that I know. Some I really like, others frustrate me with their seeking of power and revenge. She writes thought-provoking scenarios that pull me into the story and character's feelings. Just awesome!
I really loved the previous books, but this one felt like so much extra explaining was being done just to fill up the pages. I fell asleep ALOT reading it. And I wish there weren't so many added characters, it was confusing. The actual story 2 lines were GOOD! I enjoyed the plots, I just wish more time was spent on them rather than less important (in my opinion) fill in details.
And the adventure returns. I have been following this storyline from the first book. I always seem to read them rather quickly. The concept of a duplicate world and throw in some time travel for good measure creates a story line that’s fascinating with an incredible cast of characters. Surprises are abundant a very good read.
Can;t wait for next book! Continue the marvelous adventure with David and Lily et al as they travel to Avalon again! The plots within plots, both there and in Earth 2, will keep you entranced from beginning to end!
I have to admit, part way through the thought occurred to me that the series was beginning to lose it's way. Oh me of little faith. The ending is strong. Ends are tied up. And the finale leaves room for following stories. I loved it.
Brilliant read. Cilmeri is to Wales what Outlander is to Scotland. Although not just going back in time. Cilmeri shifts to an alternate world, this would make a brilliant series for TV, or Films.
Once again, Sarah Woodbury has put together an exciting extension to the time/dimension traveling family. I am very much enjoy the historical facts that are involved here and also the action. My only complaint would be that new books don’t come out fast enough..
I'm usually a big fan of these books; they are a fun diversion from my usually heavy HF novels that I generally read. However, in my opinion, the last couple of installments have seemed a little forced. I think this story has reached its end, at least for me. I don't think I'll be buying anymore of this series
This book takes place two years after Hidden in Time. On Earth Two, there is a tournament being held in Wales in which David is expected to play King Arthur. He is arguing with Lili about this and to emphasis a point, plucks the sweet off her plate. As they continue to talk, his eyes begin watering, his tongue feels too big for his mouth, his throat is closing and he is having difficulty breathing. He grabs Lili and tries to get to the wall to go over, but he travels to Avalon without needing to jump; he’s gone into anaphylactic shock. On Avalon, George is let out of prison, after being incarcerated for two year, and is picked up by Andre and Sophie. Then the events and adventures begin in Avalon. On Earth Two, Callum, Michael, Christopher and others are investigating whether David might have been poisoned; in conjunction with that, they investigate the poisoning death of Corwen, the castle woodsman. Another satisfying entry in the After Cilmeri series.
