When a series of freak storms sweep across the world, they leave behind something more than devastation. First come the swift-growing flowers, smelling like heaven and dying as quickly as they bloom. Next comes the infestation as the flowers breed and multiply inside their hosts. After that, chaos, mayhem and death.
Megan Hart has written in almost every genre of romantic fiction, including historical, contemporary, romantic suspense, romantic comedy, futuristic, fantasy and perhaps most notably, erotic. The Resurrected has a lot going for it, not the least of which is a believable cast of characters with very real needs, histories, flaws, and conflicts. Hart puts her own unique spin on the zombie genre, prefacing her zombie outbreak with tornadoes and freak storms and a plague that spreads via purple and blue flowers that turn everyday folk into thrashing madmen and staggering ghouls. In a progressively more apocalyptic landscape, Hart sends her characters—ranging from an alcoholic trying to return home to her children to a blond bombshell with a horrible past and resourcefulness even greater than her enhanced breasts—on epic journeys that will keep your fingertip swiping at your e-reader’s screen. Not only does Hart keep the various storylines infused with plenty of danger and suspense, she also injects a surprising amount of sexual tension, reminding us that passion is as much a need as food and water. While Hart’s writing has many strengths, including some refreshingly real dialogue, she really shines with her sensory description. Whether the scene is gruesome, sexy, or sometimes even both, she will put you in that moment with her skillful description. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more from this author!
Incredibly descriptive writing, realistic characters with checkered pasts, and an apocalyptic setting all combine to make this an excellent serial novel. Hart's zombies are terrifying, not because they are the shambling, rotting undead, but because their point of origin is practically inescapable, even if you are apparently immune to the mysterious spores. Hart does an amazing job with her characterizations of even seemingly minor players who only last a book or two. She's also incredibly descriptive, using sensory language to weave her magic. As much as I loved the characters in this book, I was sold on the ending - emotional, tragic, yet happy. I'm a new fan. Many kudos to the author.
