I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. This is book 2 of the Tales From Sandy Shore Series and, while one could read it as a standalone, it is better enjoyed if you've read The Net That Holds Me: A Little Mermaid Retelling Novella as this book continues to explore the plot lines introduced. The book's blurb is straightforward. This Peter Pan retelling is a dual pov romance about two individual with secrets finding each other and falling in love.
Wanting to escape the boredom of royal life, Naja finds a thrill in her secret meetings with Mikkel. Though they enjoy each other's company, Naja isn't necessarily looking for a long lasting relationship. When Mikkel begins asking more questions than she's willing to answer, it makes her reconsider their relationship. Though there are mysteries surrounding Mikkel that even he isn't aware of, one thing he knows without a doubt is that he enjoys spending time with Naja. He's used to being the one with the power when it comes to his relationships so he's left unsettled when Naja threatens that. As they both are coming to terms with their feelings for the other and what to do about them, the mysteries surrounding Mikkel appear to leave them without a choice.
The book begins when Naja and Mikkel are in the midst of their relationship. I liked the fact that Naja came off as unaffected and matter of fact and that it bothered Mikkel. It was fun seeing things go differently than he thought and how he was the one who had to prove to her that their feelings for each other were real. While the romance has some fun and snarky moments, this book is more plot focused. The reveals that occur will be surprising, in a good way, and are setting up the next installment of the book perfectly. This was a great sequel and I can't wait to read the next and final installment of the book.
Wow! This book was an incredible Peter Pan retelling. I definitely did not expect who Mikkel was and I loved all the surprising plot twists that Scarlett Luna Strange put into her book. Naja and Mikkel were such great characters who loved each other but had spent too much time flirting to realise their commitment towards each other, not to mention their difference in stations, worlds and form. Overall, this was a great book with a well-developed romance and plot. I can't wait to read The Pearl that Binds Me to find out about Elinor and Kade's story.
This book didn’t pull me in at first, but by chapter two it was definitely becoming better. By the end, I was wishing that the next book was ready to read! Besides being a clean & uplifting romance, this story has plenty of political intrigue, mystery, & fantastical creatures! What a great book!
This clean retelling of Peter pan was so good! I loved the twists on "Tinkerbell" and the lost boys! The twist at the end had my jaw dropping! So excited for the next book to see what happens!
"The Anchor that Weighs Me" by Scarlett Luna Strange, a Peter Pan retelling, immerses readers in the enchanting world of Mikkel, a shapeshifter, and Naja, a mermaid with a trove of secrets. This dual POV romance, part of the Tales From Sandy Shore Series, intricately weaves the stories of two individuals with concealed pasts as they navigate the mysteries surrounding Andalia's fallen kingdom.
Mikkel, in perpetual motion, balances a life of theft to provide for his pack of lost boys while indulging in hedonistic pursuits. Naja, seeking an escape from her royal life, finds solace in secret liaisons with Mikkel. The thrill of their clandestine meetings captivates Naja, though she remains resistant to the idea of a lasting relationship. Mikkel, typically accustomed to holding the power in his relationships, is unsettled when Naja challenges this dynamic, introducing a refreshing twist to their connection.
As the story unfolds with the couple already entrenched in their relationship, Naja's unaffected and matter-of-fact demeanor creates a compelling dynamic with Mikkel, who is used to more predictable encounters. The romance, peppered with fun and snarky moments, becomes intertwined with the broader plot, making it more plot-focused than solely romance-driven. Mikkel's pursuit of answers and Naja's guarded secrets add layers to their connection, intensifying the overarching mystery, particularly in regard to Mikkel’s own background and the Kingdom of Andalia’s history and resurgence.
This book, a sequel, is best approached with prior knowledge from "The Net That Holds Me: A Little Mermaid Retelling Novella." Luna Strange crafts a tale that extends beyond mere romance, incorporating political intrigue, mystery, and fantastical creatures. Naja's matter-of-fact demeanor and Mikkel's pursuit of answers create a dynamic narrative. The story, though part of a larger overarching plot, presents surprising revelations and sets the stage for the next installment, promising a thrilling continuation.
The novella format may leave readers craving more development in certain aspects, and the conclusion might appear slightly abrupt. However, understanding this as part of the novella structure and as a segment of a larger story prepares readers for a seamless continuation in the next installment. This clean and uplifting retelling of Peter Pan not only introduces unique twists on classic elements, including a fresh perspective on "Tinkerbell" and the lost boys, but also crafts a relationship dynamic that contributes to the story's charm. "The Anchor that Weighs Me" promises an engaging blend of romance and fantasy, leaving readers eagerly anticipating the final installment of the series.
