Two years ago, former actress Tish Yearly was fired, robbed, and evicted all the same day and washed up on the doorstep of her grandfather Tobias Yearly—a former test pilot, CIA agent, and all around trouble-maker. A few murder cases later, Tish is the owner of an events venue on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands and Tobias is the oldest licensed private investigator in Washington State. But when Hollywood knocks on her door, Tish finds she can't quite let go of the movie-making dream and becomes a producer to what could be a blockbuster film. However, having persuaded a bevy of Hollywood insiders to film a movie on Orcas Island, persuaded her boyfriend that she's not leaving him to be a star, and persuaded Matt Jones—the islands most reputable drug dealer—to help bank roll the film, Tish Yearly has a lot riding on her being able to steer the movie into safe waters. But when the director turns up dead, Tish can see a storm is about to hit and now Tish and Tobias are racing against the clock to solve the case before the movie folds or Tish ends up in jail for a murder she didn't commit.
Bethany Maines, a native of Tacoma WA, is the award-winning author of action adventure tales that focus on women who know when to apply lipstick and when to apply a foot to someone’s hind end. When she’s not traveling to exotic lands, or kicking some serious butt with her black belt in karate, she can be found chasing after her daughter, or glued to the computer working on her next novel.
I was introduced to this author and series by Hidden Gems ARC program and was so excited to see that book four was being offered. I had really enjoyed the adventures of Tish and Tobias Yearly in the past and could not wait to see what they got up to in this story. This could be read as a standalone, but I would highly recommend reading this series in order to fully appreciate the Yearlys and their adventures. This story opens with Tish bringing her love of movies to Orcas Island as she becomes the producer for a movie to be filmed on location there. When the difficult director shows up dead on the set, Tish convinces the studio to hire her grandfather Tobias, the oldest licensed PI in Washington state to investigate this death. There is no lack of suspects as Tobias and Tish start looking into the director and who would benefit if he is no longer around.
Everything seems to be going wrong for Tish and she has yet to catch a break. Tish and Tobias attempt to solve the murder of the director before the police search for evidence to prove Tish's guilt. The characters featured are of different generations and the story explores this from Tish's point of view. The writing is also comedic and engaging, and as the story follows Tish's thoughts and reasons behind the decisions she makes while she looks for evidence to find the real killer, readers can solve the case alongside her, Tobias, and occasionally Nash.
I received a free copy and am leaving a review voluntarily. Thank you to Hidden Gems Books and author.
An Unfinished Storm is a great read. The unique setting and the intriguing mystery made the book enjoyable from beginning to end. I also loved the dynamic between Tish and her grandfather, private detective Tobias Yearly. I highly recommend An Unfinished Storm. It's so much fun!
