As a fairly healthy “older” adult, I picked up this book after having been diagnosed with pre-diabetes. Little did I know that I had built up all sorts of bad eating habits over the years that have all contributed to this state of affairs! Well, it’s time to halt this in its tracks, and Huang’s workbook is just the beginning I need to turn things around. First step? To admit to myself that I am (& have been for awhile) an emotional eater, driven by stress. The rest of the book is chalk-full of activities that will help me regain the health I had taken for granted all my life. Thank you!
This is another application of Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT) applied to counter emotional eating and the associated health issues. DBT is adapted from Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) that has been found useful in treating emotion based behaviors through talking … with the dialectic presumably using opposing ideas. In that respect, it was not obvious to me how this fits in the DBT treatment arena. Like the previous book, Huang combines personal anecdotes to illustrate the concepts presented in the book, which, while helpful, don’t seem to be that revolutionary or particularly surprising. However, this was good advice and well organized, with an accompanying pdf to help put these ideas into practice. The narration was good for the material as presented and was easy to listen to and stay focused, but was not exceptional.

I was given this free advance review/listener copy (ARC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I've become fascinated with the concept of DBT since I learned about it a little over a year ago. I think it builds essential skills to handle many different types of challenges, particularly mental ones. While I think the author is well intentioned, this book and audiobook did not quite come across as wholly about DBT. Yes, the author certainly knows some of the lingo, like the concepts of radical acceptance and distress tolerance, but the exercises and skills offered seemed more like generic self-help than true DBT. I did appreciate how the author included a PDF with the audiobook version of the worksheets and exercises, and the audiobook refers you to specific worksheets and pages. I wish more nonfiction authors would take advantage of this ability in Audible. While I don't feel this book is all about DBT, that's not to say it does not have value. What the author encourages you to think about and approaches to emotional eating shared would most likely be helpful if you followed through. But if you're a fan of DBT as I am, be prepared that it will not be as much about that as you may desire.
I received a promo code for this audiobook, but that did not affect my review.
Having recently completed a DBT programme, I loved how well this book tied into what I had learned. The author has tackled a sensitive topic in an easy to understand structure and language and at the same time shared his own personal journey of struggling with emotional eating. His story resonates, not in the specific details but in the emotional vicious cycle I get trapped in where I eat to feel better then feel bad for eating. If you are considering this book then you probably know how that feels. This book is not going to be a magical solution. You are going to have to do the work, but if you use this as a guide on your journey, and you are persistent and consistent, then I believe this workbook will be an incredibly useful resource in your toolbox.
This book is such an eye-opener for me. I never imagined my eating habits are categorized as an emotional eater. This explains a lot of the symptoms I've been experiencing. It's such a relief that there's a solution to my problem. Now, I'm no longer in the dark trying to figure out what's the best thing to do about the whole situation. I now have the tools to help myself and be a better me. I recommend this book for everyone who has some or all the symptoms. Be truthful to yourself and embrace your flaws. It's the only way to be able to start improving. As they say, "The truth hurts, but the truth will set you free."
I can relate to it all. The author's experiences, the information presented about emotional eating and I appreciate the fact that there is hope. The book is easy to read and is a good reference with great exercises to lead to a new way of eating for wellbeing rather than based on a perceived need for food that isn't real. Looking forward to putting the techniques in the book into action.
The author did a good job highlighting the correlation between our emotions and how it ties to our history with food. I am looking forward to implementing these these worksheets to finally make the changes needed
I was pleasantly surprised by the factual knowledge presented in this book. The provided solutions involve many disciplines so that the reader has options to handle their craving for unhealthy foods. The goal is to reset, without judgment for past actions, and move forward. This differs from the CBT method which seeks to find out what's wrong with your past behavior and then correct it.
In other words, the past is done. Been there, done that, nothing to see here, folks. It sounds simple, and it's not always easy to move forward without guilt, but I agree that it is a much healthier attitude.
If you want to start healthier eating habits, you will find a lot of information and tools to assist you. The workbook format provides exercises to help you understand this different approach to an age-old problem.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Personally, I found the book very applicable. I tried some of the strategies presented in the book since I am, at some levels, struggling with emotional eating. The strategies were very effective for me and have helped me with my own eating journey. I am looking forward to using the book as reference with clients who may have the same struggles and it is my hope that it would help them too.
Excellent book to bring mindfulness into one's life. It was easy to read and very informative. I recommend anyone to read this, because if it doesn't help you it will help you understand someone else.
