A Why Choose Sports Romance

Lake Chapel was supposed to be my fresh start: an opportunity to reinvent myself; my chance to finally live.

Now I’m grappling with the demons of my past… and losing.

To survive this setback, I’ll need the support of the four possessive, domineering men who think I belong to them. But can my captors really be my salvation?

Worlds are bound to collide. Friendships will be tested, and rivalries are revving up.

I can’t slip back into the dark—not now that I know what it’s like to live in the light.

For the first time in my life, it’s more than just me I’m fighting for.

It’s them.

Kylian. Locke. Decker. Even Kendrick.

It’s all of them, and all of us together.

My name is Josephine Meyer. But that hasn’t always been my name. What will the boys of Lake Chapel think when they finally learn the truth?

Abby Millsaps is an author and storyteller who's been obsessed with writing romance since middle school. In eighth grade, she failed to qualify for the Power of the Pen State Championships because all her submissions contained the same theme: young people falling in love. #LookAtHerNow

She's best known for writing unapologetically angsty romance that causes emotional damage for her readers. Abby prides herself in writing authentic characters while weaving mental health, chronic illness, and neurodiverse representation into the fabric of her stories.

Abby met her husband at a house party the summer before her freshman year of college. He had a secret pizza stashed in the trunk of his car that he was saving for a midnight snack—how was she supposed to resist that level of golden retriever energy and preparedness? When Abby isn't writing, she's reading, traveling, and raising her three daughters.

”Fuck, Jojo. My heart beats for you. My body burns for you. I’m gonna fill you up with so much proof you won’t ever doubt me again.”

a lot of this book was kinda stupid if you think about it too much.. the romances though? IMMACULATE. Kylian’s personality is everything to me, i also really loved Kendrick which surprised me cause i couldn’t stand him in the first book.. but he kept calling her “mama” and i was in shambles. Locke is just so cute and Decker was definitely fighting for his life against his control issues and stubbornness. i felt so bad for Jo and everything she’d gone through. the ending to this book truly threw me over the ledge.. im desperate for the next one, i have to know what’s gonna happen next wtf!!

╰┈➤KITTY KATS CRAZY ABOUT BOOKS

🌿 𝐓𝐎𝐎 𝐅𝐀𝐒𝐓 🌿 is the second full length why choose sports romance book in the 'Boys of Lake Chapel' series by new to me author Abby Millsaps. Multiple pov's

After the previous books cliffy in 'Too Safe' this was purchased straight away! And this too like the previous book was shamelessly inhaled. I loved diving back into this world, getting to know these characters more, understanding what made them tick, delving more into their past lives, their backgrounds, and their protective natures when it came to her.

These guys were put through the wringer when that cliffy reared its ugly head, sixty-one hours to be exact, until they laid eyes on her again. And the one guy who was in her corner which was a shock was Greedy!! (man oh man I need his and Hunter's story) all this was due to an old rivalry the two opposing teams 'South & lake Chapels' a prank taken too far.

Decker Is the quarterback, he's the the brooding, alpha control freak, whose always scowling, the leader of the group. He calls her SirenKylian is the numbers guy an iPad-wielding nerd. Everything is black & white, no inbetween. But don't be fooled by this hot nerd because out of all the guys he's the one with the dirty mouth, she calls him Daddy Kendrick is the gruff, cold, gorgeous jock who we didn't really get to know in the previous book, until now. He calls her 'Mama.' And finally Locke , is the huge, tattooed emo boy, he's the first to come under our heroines spell. He calls her 'Hot Girl' To me he's probably the softest out of the group, the one that needs to be reassured and possibly loved more than the others.

“𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒐𝒚𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰...𝑾𝒆 𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒆𝒕𝒆. 𝑵𝒐𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓. 𝑵𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆, 𝑵𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍. 𝑰𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒆𝒓 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒐𝒘 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒂 𝒐𝒇 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈. 𝑷𝒍𝒖𝒔, 𝑰 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒅 𝒖𝒑 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒐𝒘𝒏.” - 𝑲𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌

And Josephine, we finally get to know her deepest darkest secret, the reason to why she's changed her name, it's dark, it's sad, but it's also made her tough. She's not the young girl she used to be.

“𝑲𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌 𝒘𝒂𝒔𝒏'𝒕 𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒒𝒖𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏. 𝒚𝒆𝒕 𝒉𝒆'𝒔 𝒂 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒇𝒊𝒕 - 𝒂 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒕 𝒃𝒖𝒄𝒌𝒍𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒕𝒔 𝒖𝒔𝒖𝒂𝒍 𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒄𝒉, 𝒐𝒓 𝒂 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒍𝒚 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒏 𝒊𝒏 𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝒔𝒏𝒆𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝒖𝒑 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕.” - 𝑱𝒐𝒔𝒆𝒑𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒆

If I had to choose which guy or guys in my case, I would probably say Decker & Locke. I love the push and pull chemistry that Decker and Josephine have, and I like Locke's vulnerable side which shines through, and the ways in which she lifts him up.

How is it even possible that I enjoyed this more that wee bit more (1 star more) than the 1st book. This series, book by book seems to get better and better so I’m super excited when the last book in the series goes live, because how this cliffy ended I’m needing to jump back into this world asap.

Hot girl, Ohio, Mama, Jojo.. what’s with all the nicknames?! It was an okay read, but all the nicknames irritated me. I didn’t understand or felt why they love her so much.. and, there are better RH books written (in my humble opinion).

Too Fast picks up a few days after Too Safe ended, and is a wake up call for all the guys but especially Kendrick and Decker.

The boys become even more OTT possessive and protective of Joey, ensuring her safety at all times, and doing everything they can to help her process her trauma (even if Decker's methods are a little harsh).

Once Joey feels safe again, she finally decides to open up about her secret past, and my god it was devastating. She is seriously so strong and resilient after everything she's been through, I'm so blown away by how amazing her character is.

After everything that went down Shore Week, the dynamic has also shifted in the group, and I am loving it. Kylian is an absolute Daddy... Sprinkles, anyone? But I really loved the change in Kendrick and Decker! Kendrick really is such a softie under all the snark, and I loved seeing the softer side of him. Plus seeing Decker not being so anal was great, but he still has a long way to go!

That being said, THIS FREAKING ENDING!!! Things were finally going so well and I was so happy for Joey and the boys, and now it's all gone to shit again 😭

*Before you dive into this review know that this is the second book in a series. Book one ends on a cliffhanger and while I am going to keep this review spoiler free it is best you don't read this review unless you have already read Too Safe.

FOR THE LOVE OF CARBS!!! THESE BOYS!!!!

Kylian had my heart the moment he came on page.
Decker... that MOFO had to earn my love.
And Locke, I've run the emotional roller coaster with that boy.
But... Kendrick! KENDRICK!!!

Just when you think Abby has given you all the emotion and trauma your heart can handle, she throws the wrench in and just f*cks with your heart all over again. I can't tell you how many times I wanted to push Kendrick off a cliff but of course he won me over. HOOK. LINE. And SINKER. Move over Kylian, you've got some competition.

Before we get to our girl can we just talk about some of these tropes....

- Why choose romance
- College football
- “Who hurt you?”
- Sprinkles
- Friendship bracelets
- Chronic illness rep

and that isn't even HALF!!!!

Now, if you have read book 1 and you should have if you have made it this far you know Josephine has secrets. And we do get those questions answered in this book, but it wasn't an easy revelation. The secrets do come, and they will rip your heart out, but the most beautiful part is how the guys handle it. They were just perfection with every part of Jo and that might have broken my heart more than the actual secrets. Okay, maybe not but it was a close second.

And, I do have to praise Abby for the way she handles sensitivity and the lengths she goes to make sure that her representation of certain aspects is handled with care.

This review might seem a little lacking, but it was supposed to be. There are so many things that I could say but in fear of being too spoilery I have left out a ton!!

To close, Abby never fails to deliver in her books, but her Boys of Lake Chapel Series is next level on everything from steam, heartache, love and loss. This book, just as with the first, was unputdownable. I couldn't stop, I had to know everything and then with that cliffhanger, AGAIN! She has me salivating to see exactly what is yet to come for Jo and her men.

This felt underwhelming. I can't exactly pinpoint why but it just felt so scattered for some reason. Also Kendrick. I don't like him. The way that he just apologised for being a grade A asshole and that's it? Joey forgives him, just like that? Nah man, not cool. I found it really unfair how she had this whole push and pull dynamic with Decker and was reluctant with him when he most definitely proved that he cared about her - more than Kendrick. Kendrick didn't contribute much to the story and I'm still wondering why Jo came to realisation that she loved him (even before Locke???). Kylian and Locke deserve that realisation first and foremost, then Decker and lastly Kendrick. Also what is with Kendrick's nickname for Joey? Mama??? It's just so random lol. The writing was good though and the smut was decent. I'm really curious to see how their story ends!

safety squad:
- no OW/OM drama
- no cheating
- RH romance
- cliffhanger

Book two picks up right where book one left off. I could feel the stress the boys were experiencing. There is a lot of growth in the individual relationships Joey has with each of the guys. I loved the change in Kendrick. However, Decker and his back and forth attitude was pretty frustrating.

Joey finally opened up to the guys and her friends about her traumatic past. Definitely check your content warnings before going into this one. It was tough to read about everything she's experienced in her past, but it helped to better understand her. I'm curious to see where things go and how things end in book three.

Too Fast is the second book in the Boys of Lake Chapel series, which is a why choose, college, sports romance (football)! This book picks up right where book 1 left on a cliffhanger, so definitely read this series in order and know that this book also ends on a cliffhanger.

We pick up just a few days after the events of where book 1 left us. And this book was definitely heavier as we dive into Joey’s past when she opens up to the guys (CW is provided if you need it). One thing I like about this group is how close-knit they are and how strong the found family vibe is! I loved all the caretaking and protectiveness, and the group text convos were so much fun too.

Thank you so much to the author for an ARC, all thoughts in this review are my own.

CW (all provided by author at the start of the book): on page panic attacks, kidnapping, hospitalization, mentions of past abuse/child neglect, detailed description of past sexual assault of FMC, discussion of death of a parent and grief, violence by way of revenge

This is the second book in the Boys of Lake Chapel series and needs to be read in order. Be warned there is a cliffhanger at the end of this book as well as book one.

First off, I will never be able to look at a vanilla ice cream cone with sprinkles again without thinking of this book 🥵🍦🫠
I was so ready to get back to Lake Chapel after the last book. Too Fast picks up right where Too Safe left off. My heart was slowly stitched back together just to be torn apart again. I love Joey so much more after this book. She is so strong and resilient after everything she has been through. This is one of the first why choose books I’ve read where I don’t have a favorite guy. I love each of them in their own ways. Maybe that’ll change after the third and final book, only time will tell. Ugh, this is going to be such a tough wait, I need more, I need answers!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🔥🔥

Tropes:
- Second in series
- Why choose
- College football
- Mental health rep
- Traumatic past (check content warnings)
- Food play
- Group activities

If I had to create some mathematical formula to describe this book it would be:

(2x-4) + (3x+9) = 85% boring.

Truly, the only interesting bits were in the very beginning when JoJo potato was recovering from the events that occurred at the end of book 1 and the very ending when some overly dramatic action and self sacrificing takes place. Everything else was just the double fs (fucking and football). Yawn. Do I care enough to see where this snooze fest is headed in book 3? Maybe a skim job.

Did Not Finish

It’s a pet peeve of mine when an author puts too much focus on advertising and setting up their next series than the series I chose to read right now. Little sprinkles here and there are fine and sometimes even make me excited to read what’s next but I hate when it takes away from the current story.

That aside, I was bored. The first book didn’t grip me but I wanted to give this one a chance. But I also know when a book isn’t working for me so I’m calling it almost 50% in. It was all the same as the last book. There is nothing terrible about this one, there’s just too many books out there to waste any more time when I know I’m not enjoying it.

Before the book even started, I have to give massive props to the author. So in the content warning, SA is mentioned, but she also tells you exactly what chapters this trigger will feature (chapter 20-25 for future notice). In other books I’ve read I haven’t seen this mentioned and I really think all authors should do this. I’m not trigger sensitive, but I kinda hate going into a book knowing it’s going to be there, but not knowing when it will happen. So I appreciate this.

These chapters did make me cry though. It was more so from peoples helpless reaction to the revelation, then from what she is recounting to them.

I did not see the first Kendrick scene coming. It was awkward, yet comfortable. I still like Kylian the most. It’s because of all the cute speeches they say. They are just … adorable. Like when she says doesn't want to distract Kylian at the football game and she knows she will get triggered, so he tells her that even though he’s focused on the game he notices when she bites her lips or he’s counted the amount of times she’s look at him. I’m not doing the speech justice, but it’s adorable.

Now I do really like this book, but there are a couple of things that I was less so a fan.

- The nicknames. Calling her mama, hot girl or her calling them Daddy. It’s not my kinda thing, but I did appreciate the mention of Pedro Pascal.

- Not keen on the spitting thing. Don’t spit in someone's mouth.

- She was not for the cameras and didn't want the attention that the media brings. However, when it is announced a whole camera crew is coming over, the whole topic is skimmed over and she’s cool with it because she doesn’t want to move out. I mean she would only have to move out for 10 days, so that really confused me.

I do still recommend this series though, mostly because I really liked the first book and I liked the character development through this one.

The last half of this was good, the beginning half was not. It was repetitive and wordy. I almost DNFed multiple times and had to skim just to make it out of that first half. Then it turned into the Kylian show. This book two really focused a lot on her relationship with Kylian and I was missing the other guys and not liking how unbalanced it was. It did get better in the last 20% and we started getting more stuff from the other three but at this point after the boring beginning and too much focus on Kylian, I was just wanting the book to be done.

I don’t know if I’ll read book three. I’m not really interested in the camera crew and that docuseries they’re making. I don’t like the h past trauma, it’s just not done in a way that is interesting to me, and I don’t want to see that all dragged up again after suffering through it through so much of this book. The complication with Kendrick’s situation doesn’t interest me either.

I am loving how protective the guys are, how they are always shielding her, how they’re standing up to Misty and Greedy, etc. They are all about her and she is all about them and I am loving that. Again it’s the same thing issues I had with book one where I love their reactions to things but I’m not liking the scenarios.

I don’t know if I’ll read book three, as mentioned above that I’m not liking the approaching storylines. I’ll wait til the reviews come in and see.

Overall: 2.5

This series just sneaked into 3rd place of all time favorite in the why-choose genre. And I must say it's one of my all time favorite just overall.

I love these guys so much. Why-choose is at it's very best when you love all the guys. It's not an easy thing to do but Abby Millsaps absolutely smashed it. I love each of these guys.

Kylian is still my favorite, I don't see anything changing the love I have for him. He could turn out to be the devil in disguise sent to earth to destroy us all. And I would still love that man.

I was very surprised about Kendrick. I didn't like him at all in the first book but here he is sneaking his way into my heart so fast I didn't see it coming.

I highlighted the effing heck out of this book. Actually I think I highlighted half of everything Kylian said. But honestly all the guys had so many amazing quotes.

Can't wait for the next book.

Spice: 4 peppers

The start of this book was heartbreaking, for all the boys but especially for Joey. We got to learn some sad and hard truths about her past and, on this regard, I appreciated the tact the author had in describing some events giving the necessary information to feel wrecked for Joey but at the same time without going into too much detail that it results hard to read. However, check the content warning at the very start of the book. There’s the chapter numbers to look out for if you have specific triggers, another thing I greatly appreciated.

This book also further developed the relationships and dynamic among the group. I continue to love Joey and all the boys, although I admit I was expecting things to go a little slower with Kendrick. The funny thing is he does and says all the right things and I love him deeply, but I think I would have liked to see him work for Joey a little more seeing how cold he was to her at first. I also found that maybe there was a little bit too much Joey/Killian compared to Joey/others. I love Stats Daddy with all my heart, but I did get the feeling there was a little bit of an imbalance compared to the other boys, which I didn’t perceive in the first book. Just a tiny bit, not super noticeable, but I felt it. That being said, I loved every interaction. It’s still hard to choose a favorite, but if I were forced to choose, it would be between Killian’s dirty mouth and Decker’s authority.

I also loved Hunter and Greedy, especially since they’re going to be starring in their own series! I can’t wait to read So Wrong!

Too Fast picks up immediately after the ending of book 1 and the guys are in a disarray after that cliffhanger, desperately trying to find their girl! We got more chapters in their POV and I always, ALWAYS prefer it that way!
Lots of revelations are coming in book 2, and some chapters were pretty rough to go through!
Also, Kendrick finally pulled his head out of his head so that was amazing 🤣.
And then there’s Decker… oh man… he is so desperately in love with Joey but he needs a complete brain rewiring and he’s still struggling with that!
I have a soft spot for Locke, this gorgeous, tattooed, pacifist philosophy student who looks so badass but wouldn’t hurt a fly and I just want to wrap him up in my arms and protect him so that no harm will ever come to him again!!!
Too Fast ends in a cliffhanger that had my heart racing and I thank all the bookish gods that I decided to read this series AFTER all books were released! GO ME 🙌🏻🤣

DNF @ 64%

I quite enjoyed the first book but I feel like this one is going nowhere, and it's getting increasingly more frustrating to be in Josephine's head. Also, Kylian's "Daddy" kink is a hard no for me. In fact, Kylian in general is getting more annoying with each chapter. I also don't like the fact that the relationships are focusing more on Kylian and Locke than on Decker and K. Which is a shame. Though I must say it's a bit weird that K decided to like Josephine out of nowhere.

I'm still riding high from reading A Knight's Revenge by Elizabeth Dear and this series just fades in comparison. I've learnt in recent times that there's too many books to read to waste time on books that don't hold your attention. So here we are. There are a lot of 5 star reviews so a lot of people have enjoyed this book. But I'm not one of them.

How has nobody in their reviews mentioned the obnoxious use of the phrase of "shit on a crumbly cracker"...I mean it's a weird phrase in itself but it was used at least 10 times in this book and that's enough for me.

I really loved the first book and was so excited to pick up where the first left off, but this one just felt chaotic and overdone.

I HATE CLIFFHANGERS. AAAAAH.

This book was a lot. It slightly suffered from second book syndrome, where the second book of a trilogy/series is a bridge to the rest of the story but doesn't actually have a whole lot of plot going for itself. There was a lot of character development though, and that was extremely important to the story.

I did not like this book as much as the first one as this one was much heavier, a lot denser, and I wasn't necessarily in the mood for the heavier subjects of this book. Being a mood reader will F up your reading vibes sometimes.

The writing is absolutely sublime. I was very busy so I was able to really take my time with this book, but I still feel like I flew through it. Abby has me hooked and I need to read all of her books now, I simply must.

Also, mad respect for the mental and chronic health issues portrayed in this story. They're a big part of who they are, but it's not the only part of their personality, they don't simply exist as a tool for the plot, no, they're all so three dimensional, so we'll thought out. Definitely made this book a character driven story which is highly unusual for a romance book, so kudos to you Abby for managing to do this so wonderfully!

My thoughts are a little all of the place for this book. I feel like 4 stars is just a little too high because I've read better books that I've given 4 stars, but then again.... Those books might not have been written this well. Abby, you got me confused! Two and a half stars for the story plus an extra star just for the writing.

This book was provided to me by the author and The Author Agency.

GOODNESS ME I LOVE THIS SERIES!!! I'm absolutely obsessed with the build in relationships that this series sets forth, the fast burn for some, slow burn for others. This is an INCREDIBLE entry into the sub-genres of reverse harem romances. Generally I'm not the biggest fan of college-aged MCs, but this was so great and the story told is so 'mature' that it doesn't have a typical immature storyline. I was eager to figure out the mysterious backstory our FMC and my heart was absolutely broken. She displays such strength and such emotional intelligence in how she approaches each of her relationships with our MMCs. This series has such wonderful romantic relationships, but an even better friendship relationship between Hunter and Joey. They had a 'friendship' instalove which I can identify with and love to see in a book. I can't believe there is only one book left in this series and I can't wait to see how our mini-cliffy is resolved in book three!

I really hated the nicknames they were using..
Cringe AF seriously.

The plot is okay but a big no if the characters are making you cringe when a steamy part arises..

“SHIT ON A CRUMBLY CRACKER” 🙄 I should have started a drinking game with how many times the FMC used that phrase. Nothing annoys me more than repetitive phrases & between that & “Big Dick Energy” I’m exhausted. The nicknames are also a lot, Mama, Ohio, Hot Girl, there’s more too 😂 I think Siren is another 🙄 also I don’t know why but the Daddy thing between her & Killian is so cringey to me, it’s not normally something that bothers me at all but for some reason I hate it with them.

Other than that I am enjoying the series, I do think it’s taking a bit too long though to establish relationships. It’s almost happening backwards with who she is moving forward with faster. There’s only one book left & her & I honestly forgot his real name Cap is moving at a glacial pace.

I’m also kind of unsure what the plot of this series actually is 😂 I also don’t understand why she stayed after the cameras were explained and just doing dumb shit all around the house while knowing damn well there’s cameras everywhere. She could literally go back to her uncles or even stay with Hunter. They even mentioned renting a condo close by for her and the other two temporarily. It just doesn’t make sense based on her character that she’s staying.

Welp, onto the next.
