Born with a love of fantasy, and an out-of-control imagination, E.K. Frances has been creating stories all their life. Whether travelling the world, or walking the dog, their mind is always dreaming up a new adventure.

Dark, gritty, broken worlds; fast-moving plots, and morally grey characters; blurred lines between right and wrong, and plenty of twists. If you like the sound of that, you will enjoy E.K. Frances’ books.

Are you ready to embrace the darkness?

I was lucky enough to find this book totally for free on the Kindle version, so I must say that the deal was awesome. I read it on my tablet using the Kindle app.

We have a short novel (a few pages more than one hundred pages long) telling the fantastic story of Connor, who enters via a portal (after breaking the window of his room) into a fantasy world where he will have to run from one danger to another greater danger in each short episode. Because the chapters of this book are short but hectic, you will devour the pages thanks to the "to the point" style of the author, who creates enough world-building without missing a second of the rhythm of the story. Spyder-bots, The men who do unspeakable things to children, and a friendly Dragon, you have it all condensed in this short story, which ends up with a beautiful message about the disease mother of the main character.

Are you looking for cozy quick fantasy reading? This is one that suits perfectly what you are looking for. I completely recommend it.

I must say I really love the story in this book , and I really do think "realm" is real , I have heard some stories about people getting lost in dreams , into another world or dimension , spent few years and then wake up back to life like it was just yesterday... I want to believe this the story in this book continues because the end part left me in some kinda suspense, the only thing I noticed in the book is some typo errors in some parts of the book , other than that ? The book is really interesting

The Missing (an enthralling fantasy adventure) is a short read. Thankfully, though, it isn't cluttered with unnecessary pontification or explicit world building. The story follows Connor, who is initially running from mysterious enemies who are pursuing him. Why? the reader wonders. Are the pursuers justified? Is he simply a runaway. No, you quickly find out.
Connor moves from place to place, soon entering a magical world full of strange life. I don't want to spoil the more magical elements, but they're entertaining and engaging, though they don't always seem totally cohesive. Still, it's fantasy, so we won't worry about it too much.
Connor himself is a complex character, and he's totally believable as a child grappling with his own anxieties and self reflection. There isn't too much given about him, but it's just enough to keep you engaged and excited.
Overall, this one is a nice, fun trip that you'll enjoy if you're looking for something right. I'd definitely recommend it for the right audience.

The Missing is a good story for a 7-9-year-old to enjoy at Halloween. There is dark mystery, there are terrifying creatures, there is a grieving boy who steps forth to face a lot of trouble. I found nothing particularly new for myself regarding the concept, but nonetheless it was nice to read. What I certainly liked about the story was its action scenes, a relatable main character, a focus on family values, some quite realistic descriptions of emotions. By his deceptive commonness and his suffering from the loss of a parent, Connor made me recall Bastian from The Neverending Story.
The book left me with a load of questions concerning the world-building and the Guardians in particular. For example, why Grandpa handed Connor his special key without warning him about the Others? Why he kept silent even when so many kids went missing? Why haven’t the Others taken measures against the Guardian threat, though their conflict lasts for at least decades? I sincerely hope that the following books in the series will elaborate on these subjects.

What a read! I read this book in a day. It's well written and draws you in from the first page.

It's like the author knows all the things that I'm afraid of and put them all into one book.

I really liked the world created by the author. The story was action-packed (I need a cup of tea and a lie down now that I've finished it). There was a satisfying resolution to the story, but a bit of a hint that there's more to come.

Young Connor is walking home. He had a fight with his sister, and he feels alone. He’s felt alone a lot since his mom died. He knows his father is going to be angry for leaving his sister, especially when many of the kids in the neighborhood have been disappearing.
This is the start of a wonderful action fantasy that goes non-stop. Connor is a reluctant hero thrust into a world of unimaginable danger, and he is going to have to do a lot of soul-searching if he is to survive.
Connor discovers some secrets about himself and an inner strength he didn’t know he possessed but is it enough? He wants only to return home but will he forget about himself, and make the ultimate sacrifice to save his friends?
This is the second book I’ve read by E.K. Frances, and I’ve enjoyed them both. The action is fast paced with a little mystery thrown in. It’s a good story for middle grade youth, but also adults.

E.K. Frances' story is beautifully crafted, especially for children. Although there is some occasional over exaggeration, it’s not a major issue. The character Conner provides just the right stability to move the plot forward. The author’s creativity in storytelling is commendable. I would recommend this book to kids who enjoy fantasy, survival, and suspense.

Since the kids and Connor McConner’s Town started going missing his dad wants him to walk with his sister margarita home from school every day but on this day they got in an argument and Connor left her behind. While on his way home the warm day turns into a rainy winter day. This is when a white van starts following him. What scares him even more is they know his name this is when he takes off and runs the rest of the way home but when he is banished to his room for leaving his little sister he sees the white van outside of his window. When the ball he is playing with crashes through the window before he knows it he hears a popping sound and before he can blink he is in another place. Although he is scared the first thing he thinks of is his best friend Jess because she was one of the children taken when he bumped into a rock and a flower that both become creatures right before his eyes he runs down the hill only to be pulled into “safety“ hi someone who appears to be a beautiful teenage girl name Amber. What Connor will learn is not everything is as it seems in this new place he has found his self in and before he can find his friend and go home he will have to save others including A dragon named A Roku and the magical key that his grandfather gave him that he thought wasn’t magical at all turns out to be the most important thing. This was such a cute book I even felt claustrophobic as him and the Jays tried to get out of the cave I knew this was a middle grade book and thought I would find it cute but I really found it interesting and couldn’t wait to see how Connor helped himself a Roku and his friends. This is a really great read that I would feel safe giving to any middle grade student including my own children I absolutely enjoyed this book. Please forgive any mistakes as gI am blind and dictate my review.

The Missing hooks you from the very beginning, putting us into a perilous situation. We’re introduced to Connor, who is walking home from school by himself, in a town were a lot of kids have gone missing. We’re already on edge when he gets pursued by a van with some shady individuals in it.

This book takes a fantasy turn early on. This new environment we find Connor in is fascinating, imaginative, and has a lot of perils. I felt like the writing was very atmospheric in the real-world parts, but especially in the fantasy sections. It did a great job of pulling me into the story. There was also a great twist in the middle of this book I didn’t see coming. As the quest continued, I especially liked the parts with Ryoko, and the whole mythos about the golden powder. I also liked how the key he’d been given played into everything.

There are some layers in this book. Not only is our main character dealing with threats in the adventure he embarks on, but he’s got some issues in his home life. There are some great heartfelt elements dealing with Connor’s mother, and I liked the way that was resolved. I thought the book had a really satisfying ending.

The pacing of this book was excellent. I was engaged the whole time. It never slows down much, even with its descriptions of the fantasy elements. This book will have no trouble holding the attention of a younger audience.

The book is left wide open for sequels, and I hope it gets some. There’re more adventures that could be told in this universe. The book may be intended for a younger audience, but adults will find a lot of enjoyment here as well. I know I did. This is the second book I’ve read by this author, and I’ve been thoroughly impressed by both. If you want a quick fantasy read, you should pick this one up! Don’t miss The Missing!

Connor is sent to his bedroom without dinner one evening. The window shatters and he is sucked through a portal. Unseen monsters except for glowing red eyes, watch from the woods, there are screams from the missing children and boiling cauldrons…and Connor with the help of his friend, Jess, and a friendly dragon, is the only one who can save the others.

It is said that The Men in this alternate universe do unspeakable things to the children they have kidnapped. Is it true? Screams coming from the direction of the cauldrons would seem to verify the suspicions of Connor and his band of young boys who’ve managed to flee. But not for long. The Men are close behind, and just when it seems the escapees are safe, hordes of grossly long-legged, orb-eyed spider bots unleashed by their tormentors dash their hopes of finding the portal and returning to the real world. Will they make it through a claustrophobic tunnel, thread their way through caves within caves, dive to the bottom of a deep pool and unlock the escape grate at the bottom before the spiders catch them?

Pivotal to the plot is the key given to Connor by his Granddad after his mum dies from cancer. It feels illogical how the key is connected to the alternate world into which Connor finds himself. However, some teasers are offered at the end of this story. It shouts…sequel! More will be revealed in the next episode! E K Frances has intentionally, perhaps, left us wondering about the key, what it means, and how it is connected to Connor’s destiny.

I deducted one star because, although riveting, The Missing doesn’t rise to the level of E K Frances’ novel The Compound. I highly recommend The Compound for multi-faceted characterizations, engrossing story, and a gut-punching ending.

I have some good things to say about this book. Straight off the bat, I read the entire thing in one sitting and would recommend others read it as well. I am not the targeted audience, but for the targeted audience, which is huge by the way, this can go crazy.

The story starts with a rather cautious and whiny boy named Conner McConner. I love that name for a children's character. Without spoiling too much, Conner is experiencing a very difficult loss while the friends around him are disappearing due to some seemingly "normal" kidnappings.

At the beginning, Conner is wimpy and wants someone else to save the day for him, but he quickly starts gaining courage and compassion. Every chapter felt like the story was coming to an end, and then boom, another plot twist. The constant adventure, coupled with an imaginative setting, made this a really fun read.

I can see this story being made into a movie and it sounds like this is the first book in a series.

I have a tiny bit of issue with minor things. There were a few scenes I found difficult to picture. For example, there's one moment in the beginning—I'm trying to be as vague as possible—where they're running through a cave and encounter a creature. I initially thought it was the same creature they had been dealing with the whole time, but it took me a while to figure out it was something completely different because the description was nearly identical.

Overall, despite a few minor issues, this book is a captivating read that I highly recommend.

This is more a novella than a novel, but very much worth reading, the story of an intrusion of evil into our world. A young boy is tasked with going into the Other World, and confronting child snatchers there, in a world where their powers are vast. I loved this book from the very start. It gets going with excellent suspense and tension. Very fast-paced, with just enough background on the hero to engage us, just enough world-building so we understand what is going on. The hero, Connor, has much unresolved grief and sadness to work through, and we root for him to make amends for his past mistakes. Terrible duties fall upon him, and when he tries to lay them off on others, bad things result. So, the hero goes through a satisfying emotional arc. With lots of surprising magical twists, the magic feels organic and natural. And the ending is very satisfying, with hints of things to come. Extremely well-done.

Well, I really liked this book-it was fast moving, and action packed in its entirety! The pace was fast moving right from the beginning, and drew me in very quickly. The story centres around Connor and his extended family, and a slightly mysterious group called the “others”-I presume the others will be more fully delineated in future and upcoming parts of the series. Awaiting these eagerly! In terms of an overarching theme to the book, one gets the feeling of escape; Connor seems forever on the run, escaping from the next challenge in his bid to return to the portal. I found the plot to be intriguing, and constantly found myself turning to the next page to find out a little bit more about Connor’s mysterious journey. The author cleverly kept me flipping pages right until the very end. In the very last epilogue, more plot became apparent in Connor’s conversation with his grandad: one eyes eagerly the next instalment in the series. Well done! A great book. Highly recommended!

The Missing is a YA novel by E.K Frances.
The novel follows Connor, who accidentally stumbles into a magical world. He has to choose between returning to his world to send help or save them himself. Joined by a dragon, his best friend 'Jess' and a magic key, he goes on a great adventure.
I was absolutely hooked from the very first page and I didn't stop reading until the end as I wanted to know what happened. The chapters are short, which makes for easy reading and is fast paced. E.K Frances is a brilliant writer and I can't recommend 'the missing' and her other books enough. I can't wait to read more by her.
💖 Thank you to the author, E.K Frances for my copy of The Missing, in exchange for an honest review.

Absolutely Captivating!

The Missing by E.K. Frances was an absolute page-turner! From the first chapter, I was completely hooked. The story blends mystery, emotion, and fantasy in such a seamless, addictive way that I couldn’t put it down. Frances’s world-building feels vivid and alive, and the characters—especially Connor—have such emotional depth that you really care what happens to them.

Every twist hit exactly right, and the pacing kept me glued until the end. It’s rare to find a book that delivers both heart and high-stakes tension so beautifully. Fans of immersive, emotional fantasy adventures will love this one. Highly recommended!

Let me just start by saying that this is not a genre I normally read. To my great surprise I absolutely loved it. I would describe it as Harry Potter meets How to Tame Your Dragon. Aimed at an audience of 14 years old and up, this is a book that can definitely be enjoyed by teens and adults alike.

I don't want to give away the plot because it's so unique and the author keeps you hyper engaged from the very beginning. It has magic, dragons, and fantastic creatures of all kinds (good and bad). We follow the main character through the usual childhood antics into a magical world on a pretty scary adventure. The book boast life lessons in the form of the various good examples set by the main character and his companion.

I read this in one sitting and the time just flew by. Highly recommend!

Connor may not feel like an extraordinary boy, but he is. He just doesn’t know it yet. His mother had recently died, so there’s that to deal with. And what is this special key he’s been entrusted with. Why are there so many missing kids from the area. In a snap, Connor will be thrust into a fantastic and dangerous world. There he will meet friends and battle foes he’s never even imagined.
Frances does a great job establishing mystery from the start of this book. The character development is also good. Connon seems frail but likable from the beginning. Once the book gets going, which is early on, its an nonstop ride up until the end. The end gives some closure, but not so much that the series cannot continue. I highly recommend this book for tweens and teens. Some adults might enjoy it too. Overall, it’s a fun, exciting and sometimes scary book.

I liked how imaginative this book was! The world that Connor goes to feels real, with lots of great details and descriptions (as well as authentic danger.) I’m glad that it’s the first book in a series because it did leave me with some questions unanswered! Connor and his grief also felt very real and developmentally appropriate. There were quite a few comma splices, which distracted the English teacher in me, but otherwise this book was enjoyable and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

A story of fear from unimaginable loss while doubting ones 'self, triggering an adventure Connor didn't see coming, but was forced to face challenges within. Along the way comes a portal and a dragon revealing learned on bravery in the worst of times. Life's unexpected bad things that can happen, will, only to realize that as hard as it is to lose something precious, never lose sight to what still lies before you, even if only for that one moment in time.

An excellent read whether you are 14 or 54, you will relate one way or another.

The Missing is packed with a plethora of unexpected turns. The book takes a seismic shift in tone early on (without giving spoilers). Treachery and danger are afoot throughout as if we're in a crime/mystery piece, but often the fantastical dark elements give one the impression of riding on a magic carpet. The plot is strong and vibrant. I think this book will very much suit children with wide imaginations, especially middle schoolers.

"The Missing" by E.K. Frances is a captivating and heartwarming tale that seamlessly weaves together elements of fantasy, adventure, and the power of friendship. In a world where children are mysteriously disappearing, the story introduces readers to Connor, a young boy who stumbles into a magical realm. Faced with an important choice, he must decide whether to return to his world and seek help or embark on a perilous quest to save the missing children himself.

Frances's storytelling prowess shines in this enchanting narrative, which is brimming with imagination and wonder. The concept of a magical world and the inclusion of a moody dragon, Connor's loyal best friend Jess, and a magical key add layers of intrigue and charm to the story. As Connor embarks on this epic adventure, readers are transported to a world filled with child catchers, mythical beasts, and carnivorous plants, making for a thrilling and suspenseful journey.

At its heart, "The Missing" explores themes of bravery, resilience, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship. Connor's determination to rescue the missing children showcases his courage and unwavering commitment to doing what is right. The camaraderie between the characters, particularly Connor and Jess, adds depth to the narrative and reinforces the idea that together, they can overcome any obstacle.

One of the novel's most poignant elements is the emotional depth of Connor's character. His journey is not only about saving others but also about grappling with the personal loss of his mother. This emotional thread adds a layer of complexity to the story, allowing readers to connect with Connor on a deeply human level.

"The Missing" is a story that resonates with readers of all ages, as it touches on universal themes of love, sacrifice, and the indomitable spirit of youth. Where the line between reality and magic blurs, "The Missing" by E.K. Frances transports readers into an enchanting realm filled with danger, wonder, and the boundless courage of a young hero.

Connor's life takes an unexpected turn when he accidentally discovers a portal to a magical world. Faced with the disappearance of children and a series of perilous challenges, Connor, alongside his loyal friend Jess, a temperamental dragon, and a magical key, goes on a quest that tests his bravery and resolve. As he navigates through threats like cannibals, beasts, and carnivorous plants, he must also confront his deepest fears, including the heart-wrenching prospect of losing his mother.

The content of "The Missing" is rich and weaves a tale that holds readers spellbound from start to finish. E.K. Frances' writing style is both vivid and immersive, and brings the magical world to life with eloquent descriptions and dynamic character interactions. The visual presentation, particularly the Kindle edition, enhances the reading experience with its well-formatted layout and engaging cover art.

This book holds significant appeal for its target audience, particularly middle-grade readers and young adults who enjoy fantasy adventures filled with suspense and emotional depth. Its uniqueness lies in its blend of traditional fantasy elements with contemporary issues, making it a standout in its genre. The editing is seamless, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable read, while the marketability of the book is strong, given its broad appeal and compelling narrative.

Though I searched for areas of improvement, "The Missing" stands out as a well-crafted and thoroughly engaging read with no evident flaws. The story is meticulously polished, and every element contributes to its overall excellence.

Readers who prefer realistic fiction or non-fantasy genres might not find this book to their taste. However, I agree that fans of J.K. Rowling and Rick Riordan will likely find "The Missing" to be an enthralling addition to their collections. The book's blend of adventure, magic, and emotional stakes is reminiscent of the Harry Potter series and the Percy Jackson series, indeed.

In summation, "The Missing" is a remarkable contribution to the world of fantasy literature. E.K. Frances has crafted a story that is both heartwarming and thrilling, with the potential to become a beloved classic for young readers. Its engaging plot, well-developed characters, and seamless integration of fantasy elements make it a must-read for anyone who loves a good adventure.

It took me a short while to understand what this book was about. I thought it was going to be about children being stolen off the streets on their way home or going to school, and so on. I was sure I was reading a thriller/detective story and the boy called Connor would be hidden somewhere. The kidnappers would demand a ransom or else he would be unfortunately sold to a gang of slavers etc. I was totally wrong and I was surprised to find it was a fantasy story aimed at teenage readers. So I attempted to read it with a view to telling my grandchildren about it later.

The main character, Connor, was quite likeable and obviously suffering from the recent loss of his mother. The way in which he entered into a fantasy world involving dragons and strange cannibalistic, Zombie-like men came across as unreal and difficult to believe. Not very surprising I suppose. Straight away I thought it was another story of the type where the central character awakes at the end wondering ‘was it real or just another dream?’ To a certain extent this meant for me it felt unoriginal for quite a way into the tale.

Its saving grace was that the story was fast moving and had enough twists and turns to keep the reader’s attention. Apart from Connor few of the other characters had much depth to them. Luckily Connor is in possession of a magic key given to him by his grandfather. This helps him to save the day and other children he finds in this strange fantasy world. It means we can find reasons to root for ‘the hero’ of the story. It was fairly scary for an early teenager I think, so I might recommend it to them in the end.

Another hair-raising, otherworldly tale of child-snatching.

This is the third book I’ve enjoyed from this author. I’ll focus this review on the differences between The Missing, and The Compound, because these two have similar story-bones. Children disappearing, adults unsure where they are, and a portal into a dangerous world.

The Missing was more straightforward, story-wise, than The Compound. I was never confused, not once. I was always anchored with Connor and felt like I rode along with him comfortably. Everything was very clear. Pacing was snappier in The Missing, too, and it can be read in an afternoon (The Compound took me a few days, which is still a quick read.)

What was less satisfying in The Missing was the main character’s inner life. Through the bulk of the story, Connor was so busy running the gauntlet of danger from the child-snatchers (and other children) that I felt I had to make a lot of assumptions about who he was as a person. There’s not much contextualization into his ‘real life’ during the bulk of the story.

But… the story also includes a particular fantasy creature that I love (love love). And the emotional weaving at the very end of the story bordered on magical. I craved that kind of stuff earlier, a little sense of something else in Connor’s life beyond ‘the immediate moment’ though I recognize integrating that kind of stuff would have slowed the book.

So, if you want fast paced adventure, try this one. If you want something a little more complex, try The Compound. Both have polished writing with a solid story at their core. I give both of these five stars.

Friends lost and found – “The Missing” did not Miss!

I read "The Missing" and found it very immersive and vivid; it is a well-crafted book based on a fantasy world with grounded emotions and characters. For me, this book was well written tale of adventure and a compelling imaginative trip through a rich mix of worlds and emotions where every turn unlocked a new challenge and revelation. What I liked most was the author's skill in nixing intense action sequences with profound feelings and emotions, thus helping in making this story be both thrilling and touching.

The most memorable part of the story for me was Connor's partnering with the moody dragon friend. This cliché yet novel narrative stood out because it mixed the excitement of befriending a mythical creature with understanding and overcoming misconceptions between the two (the protagonist and its magical guardian angel). This dragon was at first intimidating, but the writer was able to evolve it into a loyal and wise friend and ally. This – I believe – is symbolic of the power of change, empathy and understanding.

In this book, the writer flex their creative muscle and a unique ability to weave emotions and scenic imagination into a larger and encompassing storytelling. This is what made "The Missing" a resonant and engaging read. Each character's escalating actions , especially Connor's struggle with loss and bravery, was well displayed with a sincerity that kept me connected. This book can be a rewarding adventure, perfect for readers who appreciate a magical-laden story that combines fantasy with meaningful IRL lessons and wisdom.
