Mia Evers never expected school to be easy, but the demon haunting homeroom totally complicates things.
Going to a new school sucks. Trying to fit in as a Dark sucks more. All the other alignments enjoy an easy, normal life of wielding the elements or communing with plants, animals, and spiritual beings. But Darks? Ghosts and demons give them zero personal space, not to mention the creeps.
Right as things seem to be getting normal, the homeroom demon spreads a deadly curse. With no one to turn to for help, Mia's the only person in the whole school with the power to fight demons and save her classmates.
Can Mia find the courage to embrace her totally not-normal demon-slaying powers before the demon decides she's next on the menu?
Mia Evers and the Demon’s Curse is the first book in Angela Guajardo’s Mia Evers Series. This fast-paced, heartfelt adventure is sure to please fans of Percy Jackson, Robert Beatty, and Brandon Mull.
People in this world, at the age of five, align with one of seven elements. Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Light, Dark, and Kindred. They balance one another and Kindred balances them all. The only ones feared, though, are those aligned with Dark.
Eleven-year-old Mia Evers is a Dark growing up in a world that equates Darks with evil, feared for their ability to communicate with the dead and other, darker things. Her own parents, unsettled by her gift, treat her with the same caution and fear that everyone does, as if the judgment and contempt of others wasn't hard enough. Desperate for acceptance, this sweet, young girl feels like it's her duty as a Dark, a daughter, a student, and a friend, to take on Dark problems alone—and this brings her face to face with a demon.
This book broke my heart. Mia just wants her family to be whole again, like it was before they discovered she was a Dark and started to treat her differently. So she moves through a world that despises her for something she did not choose and can not change.
It's not a happy story, nor without its faults, but it's well written and fills you with hope—hope that finds the acceptance and love that should have been hers all along, hope that she can push back the evil that stalks her, hope that there's a happy ending for our young heroine. It's not a happy story.. but it is a good 0ne.

I thought this was a pretty good read. Mia just wants to be accepted; by her family, by her peers, but she has to learn to accept herself and her gift too.
Then ending definitely leaves me wanting to start the next book in the series. So I'm excited and curious to see where this goes next.
I’m uncomfortable with the world created. I don’t like demons or adults who let children bully or bad parents. However overall this is a good story. I enjoyed it and I’m pleased she didn’t create an unnecessary cliffhanger
I liked the story, and it kept me interested the entire time. Its a book for a young adult, and older. I'm looking forward to the next book , and the rest of the series!
This book was an unexpected gem! Mia Evers and the Demon's Curse delivers a refreshingly original storyline set in a vivid, well-crafted world that had me hooked from the very first page. I normally don't so much enjoy reading books where the main character is a child or teenager, but it truly doesn't matter with this one - you are totally with her the whole way. The characters are rich and relatable, the imagery is stunning, and the pacing keeps you reading. I didn’t want the story to end—and I truly hope there’s more to come! Loved it.
I enjoyed it, and it's very readable and solid as a middle-grade book with some horror overtones (there are definitely dark moments--be ready for questions if your child reads it).
"Mia Evers and the Demon's Curse" is an absolute blast of a read that immediately earned its five stars from me! From the very first page, I was hooked by Mia's relatable struggle to fit in at a new school, made infinitely more complicated by the fact that she's a Dark – meaning demons and ghosts are her unwelcome constant companions. It's such a unique and clever twist on the classic "new kid" trope!
Angela Guajardo has crafted a world where elemental powers and spirit communion are the norm, but being a Dark is a whole different (and much creepier) ballgame. The concept is brilliantly executed, making Mia's journey to navigate her powers both exciting and genuinely unsettling at times.
When a deadly curse sweeps through her homeroom, Mia becomes the unlikely hero. Watching her step into her demon-slaying abilities, despite her initial reluctance and discomfort, is incredibly satisfying. This book is fast-paced, full of heart, and perfectly balances thrilling action sequences with moments of humor and genuine emotion.
Fans of Percy Jackson will absolutely devour this. If you're looking for a fresh, engaging urban fantasy with a compelling protagonist and a unique magic system, pick up "Mia Evers and the Demon's Curse" immediately. I can't wait to see what adventures await Mia next!
