Suzanne was born in Southern California sometime in the latter half of the 20th century. In the way that some people are born knowing they want to be astronauts or cellists, Suzanne always knew she wanted to be a writer. Early dreams of becoming a zoologist and writing true stories about her adventures in Africa were crushed, however, after she viewed a television special about the world’s most poisonous snakes; she did NOT want to write about how she’d been bitten and lost a limb to a cobra. Thankfully at the same time the movie “Star Wars” premiered, and she realized that she could make up adventures and write about them, and not be eaten by deadly predators while doing research.

She dabbled in romantic fantasy writing for a year or two after graduating with a degree in English from the University of California, Irvine, until her affection for traditional Regency romances led her to write one for fun. After several encouraging rejections from publishers, she snared the interest of the world’s best and most patient literary agent, who advised her to revise the manuscript. This ultimately led to the publication of her first book, The Black Duke’s Prize, from Avon Books in the Spring of 1995. A second Regency, Angel’s Devil, followed that Fall.

When Avon folded its traditional Regency line, Suzanne was encouraged to try her hand at historical romance. As she remained keenly interested in England’s Regency period, she decided to attempt another manuscript set in that time. Lady Rogue hit the shelves in March of 1997. She wrote a total of 29 books for Avon, including two anthologies and a five-part contemporary series which received a pair of starred reviews from Publishers Weekly. One of those books, Twice the Temptation, was named one of the five best romances of the year by PW in 2007.

In 2002 her well-known love of all things “Star Wars” led to an invitation to appear on the E! channel in the television special “Star Wars: The Force Is Back”, where she discussed the romance in the movie series and ended up with more air time than George Lucas.

In 2010 Suzanne left Avon Books for St. Martin’s Press, where she continues to pen historical romance novels. Her 31st book, Taming an Impossible Rogue, is set to arrive in March 2012.

Suzanne is known for her humorous characters, sexy bad boys, and whip-sharp, witty dialogue. She currently resides in Placentia, California with several hundred guppies and various other tropical fish, and handful of very loud, spinach-loving finches. And her collection of action figures and statues from “Star Wars”, “Lord of the Rings”, “X-Men”, and “Pirates of the Caribbean”. Everybody needs some inspiration, after all.

Wonderful short story about a “rake” James (Devil) and a strong willed heroine Angelique. They have everything in common, but he has been in love before (and it did not end well) and she is betrothed to his cousin.
Fun and sweet!
Great read

This was a nice refreshing regency romance. No sex scenes, just humor, romance and regency mannerisms. The two main characters are totally loveable, you won't be able to resist. This book is what regency romances used to be - SIMPLY ABOUT ROMANCE!!!

James Faring, Marquis of Abbonley, finally returned home. After a less than pleasant past and a stint as a soldier, he had returned to England. He intended to earn some respectability and, eventually, a wife. He was finally ready to set up house.

Except now he met Lady Angelique Graham; his cousin Simon's secret betrothed.

Supposedly young and in love, their elders told them to wait before officially announcing their engagement. In order to get them to change their minds, they encouraged James to pretend he was enamored with "Angel". They felt his skittish past would quicken the marriage.

Except things backfired. For everyone.

ANGEL'S DEVIL is simply an enjoyable romance. I loved watching James and Angel secretly fall in love. Things began to unravel and Simon started to show his weaknesses. There was a gentleness with fire that the author gave her characters. I know, I know, it doesn't make sense but after you read this romance you will understand.

Quite love Suzanne Enoch stories and Beverly Crick as a narrator. This was simply a delightful, humorous and lovely short historical romance listen for this reader. It was not what I was expecting from Ms. Enoch as it was very short on intimate scenes and solely focused on romancing. Quite the change but still lovely. Both characters in the story were likeable as well.

It wasn't terrible but I didn't like it. I thought the heroine was really annoying towards the end. She expected James to put in all the effort in the relationship and complain when he doesn't. Well, what are you doing? It was really annoying and I felt sorry for James. He was trying to solve the issue and there she was, just waiting for him to do so. When the engagement for Simon was to be announced, she had a defeatist attitude and was really unsympathetic. If you really wanted him, you could have eloped. You could have done something other than going along with it. Her crying about it doesn't really gain my sympathy. The love she proclaimed she had just did not ring true especially since her actions spoke otherwise.

The story revolves around Angelique and James. Angelique is engaged to Simon, James' cousin. Their parents won't acquiesce to a hasty engagement though so James and Angelique come up with a scheme to hasten it. They would ask James for help. Seeing James' debauched behaviour might induce her parents to clutch onto Simon. Unfortunately, it soon becomes apparent that James and Angelique seems better suited. They agonize over this but little did they know, Simon was in love with Angelique's friend. There is this whole drama about the mother sending an announcement. James' ex popping up. It was just annoying because most of these dramas revolve around Angelique acting up. Since she refuses to do anything about the engagement, she proceeds to act shrewish and childish towards James. This was not an enjoyable read.

If you want details of the story, buy the book because I do not do spoilers (or I try not to).

I'll tell you what worked for me, and what didn't.

The characters worked - beautifully. The hero was flawed but eminently likeable. The heroine was true to type as a young girl eager to wed the man of her daydreams, though the daydreams had as much substance as a fop's limp handshake (not a criticism by the way. Just a fact of life with teenaged girls, even today :))

The plot worked - an absolute treat! I liked the internal conflict the hero faced - he was the one at the center of the triangle, with both himself and his cousin wanting the heroine.

The pacing - spot on.

The length - appropriate. This was a good solid read that won't leave you feeling cheated.

Secondary characters were well drawn as well.

I particularly liked the hero. Of late, I seem to be coming across a lot of heroes who would be had up on sexual harassment charges if they were living in our time - and that isn't conducive to romance in my book (pardon the pun). But Devil was real and he was honourable.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves regency romances. It's got sugar, it's got spice, and it's got the magic that makes a romance leave you sighing at the end.

Enjoy.

Funny historical romance about Angelique who is secretly engaged to Simon. Secret because her parents want to make sure she won't change her mind. Light hearted romance with dogs, kids, horses and fun. Simon's cousin knick named Devil returns from the war injured and wants to change his reputation by marrying. Simon and Devil's grandma is one of those great old lady characters who encourages romance with a lot of wisdom. Angel's brother and sister are funny and loveable. The plot was predictable but seeing how they got together was enjoyable especially meeting during a dog rescue.

Angelique is tired of waiting, being promised a wedding with Simon, but her parents won´t go public with the engagement. That´s when the couple comes up with a scheme including Simons cousin Lord Faring. Nothing bad ever came from scheming, right?
Angel didn´t count on feelings, though.
James knew when he agreed to his cousins plans that he didn´t agree with them, but he still wanted to help. Now he has to come to terms with his own feelings for Angel. What to do?
Historical romance, feelings and suspense in a great combo, listened to the audioversion and the narrator was great as well.

Kind of tame for Suzanne Enoch. The plot had merit, but seemed a bit scattered at times.

This book was very cute. The narration was good and had fairly distinct voices for each character which I think greatly adds to the story itself.

I normally loathe love triangles but in this case, it was kind of a love square or rectangle(...?... I guess it depends on how you look at it). The book had no scandalous bedroom times which I felt make the triangle/square/rectangle ok because the level of "betrayal" wasn't as dramatic. (I know that sounds kind of crappy but it worked for me)

The love aspect between said t/s/r couples went a little fast but I find it a bit more acceptable because this is historical fiction rather than a more contemporary romance setting.

I love, love, love when characters (especially those on the outskirts of societal norms *weirdos*) are accepted for who they are.
description

All in all, this was a good quick read. I would recommend the audio if you can grab it in streaming or from the library. There is no bedroom (et al.) scenes, which I found added to the romance aspect rather than detracted from the relationship building, and may be a plus for some. Not too fluffy or mushy, but just a solid historical romance a bit heavy on the 'clean' side of life.

This was a fast, fun, easy read. I liked Angel; she wanted to be the proper daughter, the proper fiancee, but she just wasn't. Instead she was was a free spirit who rescued dogs, had a smart mouth, and liked a challenge. At first Simon seemed like a great choice, then he was a nice guy who was the wrong guy, but he was going to do the right thing because it was the right thing to do. You can't be mad at that. Then there's James. James was trying to overcome his reputation and helping his cousin out at the same time. He just so happened to fall in love with his cousin's girl while helping him. But it worked out because Angel wasn't really in love with Simon and Simon wasn't really in love with Angel. Angel's dad knew it; Angel's mom did not. James' and Simon's grandmother knew it. There were some genuinely funny moments that had me laughing out loud and some frightening moments that had me holding my breath. In the end, Angel and James ended up together and it is implied that Simon ended up with Lily. An enjoyable read.

This is an older book so it's pretty tame (very tame) but I enjoyed the story.

Angelica wants to marry Simon but her parents won't announce the engagement for 9 mos so she can make sure she's serious about the relationship.

Along the way, Angelica meets James, a former rake and the "Devil" of the area because of his previous exploits. They are attracted to each other and of course James and Simon are cousins ...

Over the series James helps to show Angelica that she doesn't really love Simon, she just wants to get away from her prents, and Simon is such a good guy that his finding out the same thing doesn't necessarily mean they're not still engaged.

There are also Angelica's twin siblings who love James, and James and Simon's grandmohter who push the story along. The characters were lovable and everyone has a HEA. Cute short-ish historical romance.

-4 stars. everyone gets the happy ending they want.

"in her own household she wouldn't have to follow the stifling, silly rules her mother and father seemed to have invented simply to cause her to be almost constantly in trouble." [i moved out in the middle of my senior year of high school because of that exact reason.]

"you can't blame us for trying, you know."
"yes, i can."

"don't try to make a fool of me, abbonley."
"that's quite all right. it's no effort at all."

"it wasn't polite to argue with a female, though, and simon always retreated, to the point that she rather felt as though she was browbeating him."

"bah. i've seen you hurt, and i've seen you angry. but until this moment, i've never seen you quit."
"then don't look."

Audiobook. Low-stakes, low-angst. Essentially about these two dummies getting out of their own way so they can be together.

The circumstances keeping these two apart felt unnecessarily prolonged and began to really drag, especially towards the end. Angelique is a bit silly and comes across as very young (which, to be fair, she is?), but James was pretty compelling as a man who’s made some terrible mistakes and is truly trying to change into a better man. I liked that the true conflict was his pursuit of redemption being the impediment to his HEA with the heroine. James has a real growth arc, while Angelique’s was centred around realizing what she actually needed in a partner. I suspect if Angelique was older and “dated” a bit more, she would have eventually realized this about herself.

Spice Rating: 💋

How is a girl to convince her parents to let her marry the man of her dreams as soon as possible? Start a fake flirtation with her fiancé’s unsuitable cousin of course! It’s a flawless plan that can’t possible go wrong.

I absolutely loved the hoyden FMC and all the chaos she created. She is exactly what this MMC needed. We all know reformed rakes make the best husbands.

Cute story. Girl wants to get married but stuffy parents say wait. She meets her fiance's cousin and she and her betrothed try to use him to speed up things. It backfires in a good way. She ends up with cousin and fiance gets the girl he really wants. Enjoyable but not overly so.

3 for a clean (kissing only) book.

SO COOL to see how Suzanne Enoch's writing (and romances) have only gotten better with time.
This oldy (1995) is pretty good in a very generic kind of way. I do appreciate a good partner swap (over a love triangle), but I feel like we barely got any Simon (fiancé) here and zero Lily (BFF), so the stakes and drama were a lot lower than "expected." Angelique is very spirited, and I did like her, but James was only just fine, IMO. Enoch tried to make him all dark and dangerous and brooding, but I don't think she really succeeded. ("Devil," ha!) And together they had good verbal/bickering chemistry, but I didn't really see them fall in love so much as be told that they fell in love.
I also really didn't like the one fat-shaming throwaway joke made by James and enjoyed by Angel at the expense of some random character at a ball.

Anyway, 3 stars for a placid romance.

P.s. The two side characters, James’s Grandma & Angel's little brother Henry, were my favorites.

P.p.s. The audiobook was a poor listen. The narrator couldn't deepen her voice at all for James or Simon, so they both sounded like total fops. -Which very likely added to my idea that James was the lamest "Devil" in Regency England.

Mein Fazit:
Ich gebe gern eine Leseempfehlung!

Love triangles are messy things, and the one in this book is no exception. Fun characters and charming interactions keep this book from disaster, but it is not one of my favorites from Suzanne Enoch.

Angel is a madcap miss with an outspoken flair that doesn't mesh well with society's expectations. She's a sweetheart that lives up to her name, but she does make mistakes, especially in her drive to escape her mother's constraints. The way her mother treats her compared to her younger siblings puzzled me through the entire book. I would have liked to see more explanation for exactly why she treated Angel so differently other than just her age.

James earned his reputation as the devil, but that side of him is rarely seen. I loved seeing him interacting with Angel's younger siblings and the joy he had in hosting everyone. The most challenging scenes to get through were when he was deliberately cruel to Angel, though. But, bumps in the road aside, I did like him as a character.

Simon was the third corner of the love triangle, but I never understood why he was Angel's first pick other than he offered her an out. He seemed in over his head anytime he interacted with Angel's family, especially her siblings. Fortunately, the final resolution is a happier ending for everyone.

The characters are as wildly entertaining as expected from a Suzanne Enoch novel, but Henry and Helen steal the show when they appear. This book is a fun romp through London society and country living. Other than when the love triangle implodes (like they always do), I enjoyed the spectacle.

Working through an author's back catalog is not always fun, but Suzanne Enoch's early novels are well worth reading.

Overall this was a sweet romance. I loved the interaction between the main characters. I have to say the book was quite entertaining especially the banter between the heroine and hero. The heroine is definitely feisty and hero was a true rake with a heart of gold. I could feel the romance blooming between the two.

I gave the book three stars because I felt there were areas the author could have improved. The book was far too short; many of the scenes were rushed. I also felt the heroine at times was unnecessarily cruel to the hero. She said she loved him; than told him she hated him the next day. I'm not okay with abusive behavior especially in novels.

I did like this book; I tend to have a habit of not finishing books because I get bored or not into the story. I had a lot of enjoyment with the novel; it just wasn't my favorite.

Every once in a while I need to read a 'romance' from the past. This is one of those times and one of those books. It is an Avon Regency Romance published in 1995. Romance novels were written in a completely different style from today's Romance novels. The story is much simpler and shorter. For one thing the authors aren't adding multiple sex scenes to increase the page count. There is some romance, but a kiss is about as far as it goes. These books are a fast read and I can get lost in the romance for a short period of time. I also can read them at night and not have nightmares. I have been reading Phil Rickman's Merrily Watkins mysteries. They are very dark and I don't like to read them before I go to sleep!

Both Angel and Devil are great characters. I thoroughly enjoyed reading their story. Angelique is a delight with her slightly hoyden personality and James has a devil's reputation but a pure heart. He was wounded in the war with Boney and walks with a limp. I tend to like stories where there is a physical impediment to perfection.

Even though I knew early on that a swap of partners was inevitable (she starts out engaged to the hero's cousin), I enjoyed the journey.

More than one adversarial character supplied additional texture and excitement.
