I’m a fan of the Killer Coffee Mystery series. Roxy Bloom is a great character with a cute salt and pepper schnauzer, Pepper. Roxy owns The Bean Hive coffee shop and also volunteers at the Pet Palace animal shelter. An unusual pet is actually at the center of the controversy in book two which hatches the setting for this entertaining mystery. Delicious recipes included.
This is Book Two in the A Killer Coffee Mystery series and it is a winner. This series takes place in Honey Springs, Kentucky, where Roxy owns The Bean Hive. There is a lot of coffee and tea served among the mystery in this story, along with some mouthwatering food and desserts! I suggest having lots of coffee on hand while reading. Roxy is a former lawyer who recently moved back to this small town where she spent her childhood summers. She seems to keep getting caught up in murders in town and, along with the coffee, dishes out some lawyerly advice and helps protect her new friends. This mystery involves a lot of "errrt-uh-errr-uh-errrrrrrr's" along with the murder of a vendor of Roxy's. We get to meet her mother in this book and find out more about the mystery of Roxy and hers relationship. I highly recommend this book!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
I really enjoyed MOCHA AND MURDER, the delightful second book in the Killer Coffee Mystery series by Tonya Kappes. Full of lively characters, a little romance, dramatic family dynamics, and a murder that revolves around a rare chicken, it is a “must read” for any cozy fan.
This time out, Roxy gets caught up in the murder of her apple supplier Fred. She happens to come across her good friend Louise holding the murder weapon and standing over Fred’s lifeless body. Confident that her new friend is not guilty of murder, Roxy sets out to clear Louise’s name and unmask the real killer. She is also dealing with her expanding business (the Bean Hive coffee shop), the unexpected appearance of her mother with whom she has a strained relationship, and trying to get reacquainted with her now fiance Patrick.
When was the last time you read a mystery where a rare hen and her expensive eggs are the potential motive for a murder? This premise makes for a fantastic little mystery. Though Roxy unearths some other possible motives, the whole thing involving Bertie the chicken is fantastic. Louise’s passion, her Pet Palace animal shelter, also plays an integral part in the story, and I appreciate Kappes highlighting the selfless plight of those who work to find every pet, even chickens, a forever home. There are plenty of suspects and clues to sift through, and I relished being at Roxy’s side as she worked it all out.
The residents of Honey Springs, Kentucky, continue to charm. We meet a few more of them in MOCHA AND MURDER and also Roxy’s mother Penny. Learning the “why” of Roxy and her mother’s strained relationship is interesting. Patrick is as endearing as ever, and I really like that he and Roxy have taken a step back to get to know one another again. This remedies my only complaint about the swift turn their relationship took in the final pages of book one, SCENE OF THE GRIND. I continue to be besotted by Pepper the schnauzer and Sassy the poodle. The Bean Hive takes a bit of a backseat in this adventure, but there are still plenty of food references to leave this reader hungry. I must try the Apple Honey Crisps, and, luckily, the recipe is included.
Recommended to fans of Tonya Kappes’ other works and to readers who enjoy a charming Southern setting, quirky characters, a little romance, and big dollop of gossip with their coffee and mystery.
I received an ARC of this title and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.
Let us go visit Roxanne (Roxie) Bloom. Roxie has opened a coffee shop called the Beanhive on the lakefront boardwalk in the quaint town of Honey Springs, Kentucky. You will meet Pepper, the silver schnauzer that has adopted Roxie and Sassy, a poodle that Patrick Cane, Roxie's fiancé, adopted. Tank is also a newcomer looking for a home. Roxie becomes involved in a murder investigation when she discovers her good friend, Louise Carlton, standing over the dead body of the apple supplier the Roxie gets all her apples for baking. Louise is holding a bloody knife but claims she found Fred Hill, the orchard owner with the knife in his back and was trying to get help. Louise requests Roxie to represent her to prove her innocence. Louise runs the pet adoption and animal shelter center. Without Louise, the center would close down. Then a robbery is reported by Fred Hill's wife. Bertie, the Ayam Cemani Chicken is missing from it cage in the barn. It was a chicken from the pet adoption center. It's a rare breed of chicken as it is black: plumage, beak, tongue, legs, toe nails, even its meat, bones, and organs! Is the robbery connected to Fred's murder??? During all this excitement happening, Roxie absentee mother returns into her life. What more could happen? Colorful, vivid, lively, well fleshed out characters with quirks, gossips and flaws that make you want to be a part of the town. This read was filled with plenty of mystery, twists and turns, vivid descriptions, adventure and romance. The story keeps an invigorating pace from start to the conclusion. I highly recommend this book. I volunteered to read Mocha and Murder. Thanks to the author for the opportunity. My opinion is my own.
Book 2. Roxy was having a successful business The Bean Hive where she sold various coffees and teas , and every week they would have something special like quich and . casseroles they also had baked goods. . Bunny an older woman 70's and Emily 18 help her employees. Roxy had a proposition for Emily to run the cafe and bake all the goods. Because Roxy wanted to have free time mostly likely to solve murders lol. Roxy mom showed up at her doorstep ( she did not see for a long time) Her mom Penny and her Aunt Maxi could not stand each other. Roxy got her fresh fruits and such from a local venders. She saw one her great friends Louise that owns Pet Palace animal shelter (where Roxy volunteers) have it out with Fred the local vendor store. Roxy found out they were fighting about a chicken Ayam Cemani that's eggs are worth slot of money that Louise gave to Fred and wanted Bertie the chicken back because she believed he was mistreating her. Guess who gets murdered and the killer. This one is also a twist of who it is. I read book 1 and forgot about it. But I will remember these books in the series. I will read next one
When the local orchard owner is found murdered on his property, the first person that is a suspect is Louise Carlton owner of Pet Palace. Louise approaches Roxy to help clear her name. When Bertie, Fred's prize hen and her eggs are stolen, Roxy is on the move to clear her friend Louise, and find out who killed Fred. Roxy's mother also comes into town, with a plan of her own to move to Honey Springs to be close to her daughter. Can Aunt Maxi and Penny come to a truce? This book is the second in the Killer Coffee Mystery Series, and I was lucky to be able to receive this book for an honest review. This series is a fun, quick read with a whole town full of amazing characters. I look forward to many more trips to Honey Springs!!
Mocha and Murder A Killer Coffee Mystery Series, Book #2 Tonya Kappes 5 Stars
Synopsis:
Roxy becomes entangled in another murder as she puts her sleuthing skills to work in order to prove that Louise Carlton didn't kill Fred Hill over a pet adoption gone wrong. After all, if Louise goes to jail, who is going to find all the animals at Pet Palace a home. (Goodreads)
Review:
The characters are well rounded and three dimensional. Roxy is quirky, funny and full of energy. I really enjoyed getting to spend more time with her, and her boyfriend Patrick. I am glad that Roxy wants to date him for a while and their relationship is moving a little slower, it made it more realistic. I also enjoyed spending time with Aunt Maxi and getting to know Roxy’s mom a little better. And the other characters, such as her employees, added a lot to the story.
The author is very talented in developing a small town setting that is warm and inviting. The neighbors care about each other but they are also willing to gossip whenever they can. She is also very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book I felt like I was right there, watching all the action take place.
One of my favorite parts about this series is the Pet Palace, a shelter for animals. I really enjoyed reading about the animals and adoptions, even a hen. Adoption is such a big need and I like the way this series shines a light on that need.
The mystery was carried on well throughout the book and it was difficult to solve. There were enough suspects and clues to sift through that even the most experienced armchair detective would have trouble solving the mystery. I was surprised with who the culprit turned out to be, and that is a great thing.
I would recommend this book (and series) to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy (actually I would recommend all of her series). I will be looking forward to reading the next one.
This is the second book in A Killer Coffee Series. This is my second time reading this. I don’t know what happened with my review so I’ll write this one. I enjoy the character of Roxie and many of the others. The boardwalk setting in the small town of Honey Springs is well described. There is a visitor’s map included though in case you need it. I love that pet adoption is part of the story and the series. As a rescue dog owner, I am aware of how often these pets are the rescuers. I’m also aware of how many don’t find a forever home. I’m grateful for the author bringing awareness to this issue. In this book a chicken from the pet palace plays a part in the mystery. Yes, a chicken! I love it. You can find all kinds of animals at my local shelter. It’s good to know it’s a thing in other shelters, too. When the owner of Pet Palace finds a body, and is implicated in the murder, the future of the shelter is in jeopardy. Roxie does not believe her friend did it. And the shelter cannot be in danger of closing! Those animals deserve a good place to stay until they find their family. Roxie decides to investigate but then her Mama shows up and brings her own complications. Will Roxie be able to save the shelter or will her Mama distract her? I highly recommend this book. As far as the mystery goes, you can read this book as a stand-alone. The greatest pleasure, though, will be gotten by reading it in order. You will understand the relationships between the residents so much better. The books are very entertaining and easy to read. Once you start a book you will devour it. So it won’t take long to catch up.
Roxy has gone to the local Farmer's Market to purchase some apples and she ends up having to break up a spat between the orchard owner (Fred Hill) and the lady (Louise Carlton) who runs the Pet Palace, a rescue centre. In all the confusion Roxy ends up forgetting to pay for the apples she has taken and so the next day she heads out to the orchard in order to pay. When she gets there though Fred is not around and so she heads out to the orchard to track him down, only to find Louise standing over his dead body, clutching a bloody knife!
Roxy is positive that Louise is innocent and so she sets out to find the truth, oh and Roxy's mother is in town and not just for a visit - so that puts another spanner in the works!
"Mocha and Murder (Killer Coffee #2)" by Tonya Kappes missed out on having a more fall or apple themed name since I don't remember mochas getting mentioned at all but there sure was a lot of apple and apple crisp talk. I'm sure there could have been some apple coffee related title that could have been used. Caribou and Starbucks sure have come up with some.
I have to say, I was prepared to be annoyed with Roxy and her love life if she quickly jumped into marrying her high school summer sweet heart after 12 years apart and zero dating. Luckily, in this book, she seems to realize she doesn't know the adult version of him and asks to do some dating while they figure wedding details.
The mystery part starts when Roxy accidentally forgets to pay her apple guy when she picks up her order. She goes back the next day with some of the apple crisp she made and the money just to find him dead. Turns out that he had been in some arguments over a fancy chicken and who got to sell some eggs she laid since they'd sell for quite a bit. I'm not sure why, it seems like the eggs were laid before she was adopted. So, not his yet. Either way, he needed the money and so did some others.
First off let me say, I'm dying to make those Apple Honey Crisps. :D So happy that the recipes are included. Aside from that recipe there are a few others in the book, which is a bonus many cozies have.
Same fun characters as book one, plus a few new ones introduced, but don't worry, you can read this as a stand alone if you haven't read the first book of the series (Scene of the Grind.) It is clean and safe for all ages. Reads quickly. The mystery in this book is a little weird (not in a bad way... just quite unusual.) I mean how often are people killed over chickens? :D There is some humor and a little romance in addition to the mystery. There is a kinda sorta twist.
If you are a fan of cozies, you will enjoy this series and it's characters.
Do you love pets, recipes, coffee shops, small southern town charm, and cozy mysteries? If yes, then this is a book for you.
Mocha and Murder is book 2 of A Killer Coffee Mystery Series by Tonya Kappes. This is a great follow up to the first book Scene of the Grind. Ex-lawyer and coffee shop owner Roxy stumbles across another murder in which one of her friends appears to have committed. Roxy is asked to help clear her friend of being a suspect. Can Roxy clear her friend’s name while dealing with a new engagement, her volunteer duties, her family, running her store, and helping animals find their forever homes?
Our main character Roxy is a very busy lady but she will always find time to help out those she cares about--human or animal. I love all the characters with their quirky southern personalities but other than the animals, Roxy is my favorite character. I love her passion for her family, love for animals, and desire to solve mysteries. In the first book we see Roxy’s new relationship with Patrick start to move pretty quickly. In Mocha and Murder, Roxy wants to slow things down and really get reacquainted with one another. I am so glad author Tonya Kappes decided slow things down, by doing this she makes Roxy more realistic and level headed. She is smart and is not going to be controlled only by her heart. She will also listen to her brain and make decisions that are going to better for her in the long run.
I listened to the audio version of this book. The narrator is great at bringing Roxy to life. This was my second time reading this book. By listening to the narration I was able to pick up on bits of personalities I didn’t pick up on the first time reading the ebook. The narrator definitely make the reading experience great.
I would definitely recommend and look forward to the next. This is a great book for cozy mystery lovers, no bad language, no graphic sex or violence. Best if you read in order for backstory on characters but still great as a stand alone mystery. The book contains recipes for humans and pets.
All thoughts and opinions are my own, I have not been influenced by anyone.
I truly enjoyed this 2nd book of Tonya's new series. Roxy having followed her dream in opening the Bean Hive is doing well and her future is looking bright. At least it was until she comes across another dead body, this time with a friend standing over it with a knife. Did Louise kill Fred Hill a local apple orchard owner? Roxy doesn't believe so and hopes that she can find out who the killer is before Louise ends up in jail. With a very expensive chicken thrown into the mix, some costly eggs, and a nice piece of property the suspects are there for the picking. Will Roxy be able to figure it all out? The characters are fresh and likeable which makes for a quick and enjoyable read, you won't want to stop until you reach the end. Tonya deftly plotted the story and leads you to a satisfying conclusion but will have you excited for what comes next. I can't wait to visit Roxy again.
Mocha and Murder is the second book in the Killer Coffee Mystery series penned by USA Today bestselling author Tonya Kappes. Set in the quaint town of Honey Springs, Kentucky, where fanciful shops line the street including The Bean Hive owned by Roxy. A map is included in the book so readers can visualize the locale. Coffee, tea and delectable food and desserts are plentiful and well-integrated throughout this mystery. Roxy’s special pastry, Apple Honey Crisps, are made using locally sourced apples from Fred's orchard. While visiting the orchard Roxy finds Fred murdered on his property, with her friend, Louise Carlton owner of Pet Palace, standing over his body. Roxy is called to utilize her law degree and amazing sleuthing skills to help clear Louise of murder charges. Louise placed, Pepper, Roxy’s faithful dog. The reader follows Roxy, Patrick her boyfriend, her Aunt, her mother, who unexpectedly appears in Honey Springs, and all of her friends as they unravel a tightly woven mystery with lots of twists to keep the reader guessing. Add in an extremely valuable, rare chicken that lays highly sought after, expensive eggs and you have quite an atypical cozy mystery to crack. This book is the ideal cozy mystery; great mystery, clean, a hint of romance, developing relationships and a plot to keep one guessing. I appreciate the recipes included at the end of the book. Our dogs loved the Pupsicles (they can be made with strawberries if watermelon isn’t available). I highly recommend this delightful cozy filled with Southern charm.

Tonya Kappes hits it out of the park again with Book two in this series!
This is book two in the Killer Coffee Mystery Series and a fantastic read! We once again are in Honey Springs where Roxy, owner of Bean Hive a wonderful coffee shop, formerly a lawyer, stumbles on the murder of once of her vendors. Her friend Louise becomes suspect number one and of course Roxy totally needs to get involved since she believes Louise couldn't have done it! We are introduced to a very expensive egg-laying hen and a very strange set of circumstances. We are introduced to Roxy's mother and learn a bit about her background and relationship misunderstandings harbored for years between Roxy and her mother and her Aunt who treats Roxy like her daughter. We get to know a little more about her Fiancee who helps Roxy solve the murder and cares so much for Roxy. Although Roxy knew him when they were in High School together, she left to go to college and totally lost connection to him until she returned to Honey Springs and she has those years in-between to find out who Patrick really is! Of course you can't have a book by this author without animals involved, especially dogs and I love how she brings pet rescue into the storyline! Needless to say, I love Roxy's little dog Pepper! Even though I was able to figure out the murderer sooner than Roxy, I Loved how it all so skillfully evolved tying up all loose ends! I can't wait for the next book in this series. Tonya has written numerous series and every book in every one of her series is just as fantastic as the next! You can never go wrong when reading any book in any of Tonya Kappes' series! I was given an ARC copy by the author, but the opinions her are stricly my own!
WHILE I DO ENJOY THE COZY SIDE I REALLY DIDN'T CARE FOR THE MYSTERY.
SERIES PREMISE: In this series we follow Roxanne Bloom owner of "The Bean Hive" a cafe in Honey Springs, Kentucky. Along side her senior assistant Bunny and her Schnauzer Pepper. In this book: Roxy forgot to pay for her apples at the local market, so after making some baked treats with some of the apples so drops by to give the stall owner some along with the payment. That's when she spots the stall owner dead and Lousie Carlton, Pet Palace Adoption's owner standing over his body with a knife. Sure Louise and Fred had squabbled at the market, but there's no Lousie killed Fred over it. Roxy dons her sleuthing cap to find out what's going on.
THOUGHTS: Ok so honestly I don't think the series is for me. While I so love that Bunny, the senior assistant and Pepper the Schnauzer are here, I feel like I can get what I need from both of them in other books. Also Roxy's mother and Aunt's issues were really annoying. Good book if I ignore the mystery, but it's so short that the cozy side falls away really quickly.
A new favorite cozy. Tonya Kappes has written another captivating cozy that you just want to savor and when you come to the end you wish there was more.
I love the small town with all it's southern charm. This book pulls you in and makes you want to sit a spell at the Bean Hive helping solve mysteries with Roxie while taking in the surrounding community of Honey Springs. I can just picture walking down the streets wandering through the shops of Honey Springs.
I was glad to see that Patrick is startng to open up more to Roxie and actually helps her solve the murder of Fred Hill. I at first didn't think I was going to like her Mother but she grew on me. I love Aunt Maxi and her outspoken ways.
This is the second book in the series and I think each one gets better and better. The characters are growing, the mysteries are unique, and the twists keep you guessing. It is a mystery that you don't figure out fast on your own but one that keeps, you right along with Roxie puzzled till the end.
I can not find enough adjectives to describe how much I love this book. If you enjoy a cozy with a wonderful setting, good characters, a excellent mystery with a little romance then you won't want to miss this one. I can't wait for the next book.
I'm still not sure how I feel about this series. It's hard to believe that a woman with a law degree would be happy running a coffee shop in a small Kentucky town, but I guess that's not much different than Susan Wittig Albert's China Bayles running an herbal shop in small town Texas.
Roxie, the MC, has a good group of people around her - and she seems to be mending the fractious relationship she had with her mother, which poses interesting possibilities as the series continues. There is a potential love interest developing, and I appreciate that it's not insta-love like we get in so many other cozy series.
It took a while to lead up to the primary death in this book, and took a bit longer to determine that it was murder and not an accident. There were several viable suspects to think about, but one character struck me as a little 'off' almost from the very beginning, so it wasn't surprising to learn that this was indeed the killer. The motive was selfish, but it made sense.
The next book in this series is in my audio library, but I will probably wait until the next Christmas season to listen to it, since it's tagged as Holiday here on GR.
I'm really enjoying this series even if I thought the romance was rather rushed in the first book. This follow up seems to make more sense and I'm liking it a lot more as these 2 are getting to know each other better so Patrick is looking more and more appealing ;)
The mystery was even better from the first book and I definitely didn't pick the murderer this time around. I also loved how dogs are such great companions in this series and each time they mentioned petting or cuddling with their dogs, I need to look for mine lol
The only issue I had is that I am mostly unfamiliar with this supposedly home-baked goods so I'll be trying some recipes (apple crisp cookie from this book). Will be back to update on my trial ;p
This series is off to a great start! This is the second book in the killer coffee cozy mysteries. In this one Roxy's mom comes back to town and stresses her out. She is wanting to "get to know" Patrick and he can't understand why. Fred Hill is murdered and Roxy's friend Louise is the prime suspect when Roxy finds her standing over the body with the bloody knife. Now Roxy must find the truth and get Louise off the hook
If you enjoy a good cup of coffee delicately combined with a good mystery, this is the series for you. Is is only the second book in the series and I'm hoping for many more from author Tonya Kappes. Every seres she writes is as good as the next but because of the coffee theme I think this one might be my favorite. I hope book three comes out soon.
I just love this series and this book was just as good as the first one. I can't get enough of this. This just seems like the perfect lake town and I just want to go there. The story was a lot of fun and right up until the killer was revealed I had no idea. I cannot wait to start the next book!
Great 2nd book! I had both the ebook and audiobook The audiobook narrated by Madeline Mrozek is well done. Roxie Bloom finds local orchard owner Fred dead under suspicious circumstances. Her friend Louise is a suspect. I wondered about the culprit but it still kept me guessing. Enjoyable. #MochaAndMurder #AkillerCoffeeMystery
Another visit to The Bean Hive brings further character development and a plot that will have you spending the afternoon turning pages furiously to see what happens next. The boardwalk is once again buzzing with activity and things take a turn when someone turns up murdered. Once again murder, mystery and coffee all go together to make the perfect recipe for an afternoon of entertainment.
This is the second book in A Killer Coffee Mystery series. Roxy makes Apple Honey Crisps among other wonderful mouthwatering desserts and food. She gets the apples from Fred's orchard for the Honey Crisps. Once again she is caught up in a murder and a chicken is involved! Yes I said chicken. This was a quick read with fun characters and a trip back to Honey Springs, Kentucky. So grab some coffee or tea and enjoy the story.

I enjoyed this next book in the series, A Killer Coffee Mystery, where there is a murder in an apple orchard- a fun and quick read and looking forward to the next book in the series.
